Why is Ed Zotti so despised by messageboard fans?

(parody of this , with apologies to Guanolad for the below:)



He changed things, under the mistaken belief he was improving his own messageboard, when it didn't need to be changed.

If he'd kept to a few improvements in the Pit that didn't affect the entire tone of his messageboard, he'd still be loved.

Except for the protection of the Mods from Pitting, which introduced a new tone of deference that also changed the way the Mods would have to treat posters in return, which Ed didn't care about. Arguably Ed only clarified what he wanted all along, which was to treat posters like children and his hand-picked Mods like all-seeing, all-knowing Gods, but he kept obscuring his point with all that high-minded blather about "bad" language.

Oh, and Lynn and Jenny are a travesty.

A: Because people are angry and disappointed to think that that guy might be Cecil Adams. It would be like Toto pulling aside the curtain, only for Dorothy and her friends to see Carrot Top pulling the levers.

Ha. I can't speak for anyone else but this is true enough for me. It was so disappointing to realize my curmudgeonly old Uncle Cecil was a humorless fuck monkey with delusions of dictatorship.

Oh, his delusions have nothing to do with dictatorship. That he already is. What he has are delusions of adequacy.

That pretty much covers it. Ed managed to trash the Cecil Mystique. It turns out that the World's Smartest Human is just another money-grubbing Babbitt. And not a particularly bright one, either.

And for me personally, it didn't help that he started reminding me of the jerk I worked for twenty years back (I quit that clown, too). Both were so wrapped up in their own little world that not only could they not figure out why the rest of the world didn't think their notions were wonderful, but they were flummoxed to find that other people even have differing ideas.

I don't think Ed is Cecil, their writing styles are different. Their egos are similar, but style is different.

My guess would be that that's because the "Cecil" style was established by the original couple of "Cecils", and Ed adopts it when he assumes the persona. It is passing strange, I agree, that "Ed" and "Cecil" seem to have so little in common.

There are message boards with far stricter moderation, rules against "mod sass", and so on, with happy, satisfied members that generally think the administration is doing a god job.

There's resentment against Ed because, unlike most other message boards, Ed really wasn't a part of the community. To use a poor analogy, for several years he stood back on the sidelines, and often wasn't even in the stadium. He wasn't really part of the community that he created, and here he was now deciding to out new rules in place that wold dramatically change the tone of the board How could he govern a community he really wasn't a part of?

I agree with this totally. I've actually posted over there more than once that I liked Ed a lot better when he was pretending we didn't exist. From the moment he started to get more involved, he's been causing unbelievable friction among the Doper faithful. I think the actual spark that started the fuse on the powder keg burning was the arbitrary and capricious initial banning of Otto. That Otto subsequently shot himself in the foot by socking is irrelevant, because it hadn't happened yet when the mob broke out the torches and pitchforks.

Yeah speaking of socking, I joined the SDMB back in January, paid for a subscription, then decided I didn't like my user name. Instead of going to the mods I just rejoined again, paid again, and posted. I used my original user name twice more but got banned. It was my own fault I know that. When the mods emailed me to check if I had two accounts I told them straight up what I'd done. They banned me right away, and the jist is I would have to ask nicely if I could have one of my accounts back. I didn't feel like having to ask politely. It was down to me that it happened, but the way they banned was a bit much. I went onto another message board and mentioned this (and also finished it with 'fuck the SDMB' for good measure). And got my ass flamed off by posters who worship at Ed's feet. It turned me off that board for good.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for someone who could probably get unbanned by asking politely but instead pisses and moans and throws their money away, but I do have to admit that the SDMB's policy in this case is really goddamn stupid and unexpected. Sure, no sock puppets, whatever. We get the point. No abandoning your old account in good faith and paying for a new one? That's pretty bizarre.

I agree; but at least in this case the rule is clearly stated and (as far as I know) consistently enforced (except for Ed Zotti/Cecil Adams).

If you're talking about giraffeboards, you "mentioned" it by starting a Pit thread with your very first post. The response was pretty civil, and based on reasonable arguments from people who were also displeased with changes at SDMB, but who felt you were being a bit silly.

Though you actually said "fuck Marley" there, not "fuck the SDMB", so possibly you're talking about yet another message board -- one where you really were flamed, because the other posters love Ed so much. What board was that?

What I don't get is that issue came up NOW, when the SDMB is far, far cleaner than it has been in a long time. I remember years ago lengthy discussions on rape, swallowing semen, pussy smell (okay, that was me) and plenty of other potentially gross/scatological subjects. Why all of a sudden have a cow about a couple of measly words? If I hadn't witnessed the whole thing I never would've believed it. I honestly thought it was someone's idea of a joke for a while.
