Chris [spoiler:t21s10y8]chose a great song. I think he did very well. I like the catch thing he did at the end of some of the notes.[/spoiler:t21s10y8]

I'm starting to like the Old Navy mannequin commercials. I think I'll see Monsters and Aliens when it comes out. Mazda 0% financing. Stupid Bass Pro Shops lottery commecial. Kroger "lower priceson produce" commercial. Comcast $10/mo for 12 months - hurry! Infinity "nothing breaths like it"??? Local news teaser. Stabbing, new curfew.
Lil - [spoiler:3drtvsaw]Meh. I wanted her to do more with this. I think she should have chosen another song. She does well on the chous, but the verse were a waste[/spoiler:3drtvsaw].

Scott - [spoiler:36rer5ol]He's on the piano. He sounded like Mannilow when he said the word "miracle". He sounds pretty good, but I felt no chills. I don't like his falsetto. The arrangement sounds like a TV show theme song.[/spoiler:36rer5ol]

Alexis - I want her to do well. Jolene. I can't wait to hear this.
(Randy Travis is aniceguy- with Wolverine hai)
[spoiler:o1kc8yfn]She sounds good but she's a little behind the band. The timing is off - I don't like it and I like her. I wanted more.[/spoiler:o1kc8yfn]

Danny- [spoiler:1qwcdbgb]My favorite contestant. He sounds good. No! Not Carrie U! I love his voice so I'm pretending he's singing other words. He sounds good. Nice end.[/spoiler:1qwcdbgb]

Anook - [spoiler:20j84y04]Vey good. He has a great voice. Good song choice![/spoiler:20j84y04]

Meghan - [spoiler:28nms913]Much better than her usual. She looks good and she does "torch-like" pretty well. Naw - she lost it in the second chous. Her changes didn't wok, but still better than before. Not bad.[/spoiler:28nms913]

Matt - [spoiler:36nnsem0]Great job! It was a good song choice. I like his voice and I like him.[/spoiler:36nnsem0]

Preface -- I'm not what you'd call a country fan, but I'm very "country-aware". My wife is a fan, so I've had a good amount of exposure. And while I don't go out of my way to listen, I don't hate the genre. Ok, on to the watch-along:
Michael Sarver - "Ain't Going Down 'Til The Sun Comes Up"
Move, dude! It's a high-energy song, but that was unbelievably lazy. Of course, the second I turned to my wife and said "C'mon, he needs to start running across the stage!"; he decided to have a fricking seat. Weak. Vocally, he was...well, himself. He's probably has the weakest vocals in the group, and this didn't do anything to make me think otherwise.
Allison Iraheta - "Blame It On Your Heart"
Know what I hated about that performance? Four times, she sang the word "two", and each time she held up two fingers. Know what I liked about that performance? Everything else. Fricking terrific -- this was the polar opposite of last week for her.
Kris Allen - "To Make You Feel My Love"
Very, very Archuletta: smooth, solid vocals; boring as hell. I like his tone...his voice has a very pleasant sound, and he has excellent control. That said, I wouldn't care if that was his last time on the AI stage.
Lil Rounds - "Independence Day"
Wow...that was one uncomfortable performance -- she did fine in the chorus, but the verses were completely robotic. It was watching the LilBot2000. She started bringing it together towards the end, but then she had to go for the Unnecessary Tacked-On Big Finishing Note -- ugh.
Adam Lambert - "Ring Of Fire"
That was like some bizarre Jim Morrison/Elvis/Taime Down blend -- completely and utterly pretentious...but it sorta worked. The weakest I've seen of him, but it was still better than most.
Scott MacIntyre - "Wild Angels"
Huh...that probably won't be in my personal bottom three, and I didn't expect that. Scott has some talent, but let's face it -- he here because he's blind. He'd be fine in any bar, but this show is way out of his league. That said, this was the best we've seen of him yet.
Alexis Grace - "Jolene"
It seems to be silly to be disappointed with that, but I was. It was very good, but I was expecting great. Still, one of the top ones so far.
Danny Gokey - "Jesus Take The Wheel"
Very close to the top for "Worst Songs Ever Written" for me -- but the vocals were up to his par. Guy can sing -- no question there. But man, the irrational venom from his haters is going to be hysterical off of that song choice.
Anoop Desai - "Always On My Mind"
Hell yeah...very, very good job. Excellent vocals and a fantastic connection with the song and the audience. I love the energy he brings to songs, but he showed here that he can put together a good ballad performance without putting me to sleep.
Megan Joy - "I Go Walking After Midnight"
Ok, enough already. She's been skating by on quirkyness, but the joke isn't really funny anymore. That was a pretty damn poor vocal, and...ah, crap...they just said that she's got the flu/been hospitalized. Ah, whatever...if the VFTW crew keeps her around, I want to see a lot better from her next week to make up for this steaming load.
Matt Giraud - "So Small"
Here's the problem with Matt: I looked at my spreadsheet and saw that he was up next...and I then thought "Who?" So I look at last week's chart for a reminder, saw that he was sang "Human Nature", and thought "Who?" He's simply not in the least bit memorable to me. That said, that was a pretty damn fine performance. It's kind of ironic -- that was the only song from tonight that I didn't know, but it's the one that make me remember Matt.
Rankings, top to bottom:
1. Allison Iraheta - "Blame It On Your Heart"
2. Anoop Desai - "Always On My Mind"
3. Alexis Grace - "Jolene"
4. Danny Gokey - "Jesus Take The Wheel"
5. Adam Lambert - "Ring Of Fire"
6. Matt Giraud - "So Small"
7. Kris Allen - "To Make You Feel My Love"
8. Scott MacIntyre - "Wild Angels"
9. Lil Rounds - "Independence Day"
10. Michael Sarver - "Ain't Going Down 'Til The Sun Comes Up"
11. Megan Joy - "I Go Walking After Midnight"

Thanks!
I LOVED Adam Lambert's version of "Ring of Fire" - my husband hated it. This was the first time I saw something special from Adam. My response to it was, "He made Country Week his bitch!"
Scott - holy God, that was awful. Boring, trite, forgetable, bad singing - it had everything.
Alexis - I want to like her so badly, but she keeps just missing the mark. She should have killed her song, but she didn't.
Danny "God Boy 3" Gokey - "Jesus Take the Wheel." Oh, fuck me. That was everything disgusting about country music distilled into two minutes - quite the feat. I don't know if I can adequately convey just how much I loathed that performance. Could all of you Americans do me a favour and vote for 'Anyone but him' for me? That would be super.
Hal, I read your comment after I posted - . Yeah, I'll cop to it - I really can't stand that guy.
Anoop - good show, old chap. Very nicely done. I thought Paula was going to throw her panties at him.
Megan - that was pretty wretched. Her performances are always so weird, and not in a good way.
Matt - not bad. Not bad at all.
I thought Kris was by far the best. Overall, the best night this season.
Couldn’t agree more.Quote:

I'll have to change my notation for that song ("Some shit by Garth Brooks.").
(Followed by "Some shit by Patty Loveless." and "Some country shit." and "Some other country shit." I'm glad country week is over.)
I'm watching it now and Danny Gokey is dead to me. That song is a suckfest of suck. Hey Jesus, I don't feel like driving! Your turn! It makes me furious to think about Carrie Underwood's face. I hate her.
Adam was awesome.
Just curious, are there any Jesus songs y'all like, or do you just dislike every Jesus song? How about Jesus Christ Superstar? Or Jesus is Just Alright with Me?
Hell, I love both the JCSS and Godspell soundtracks, and have no specific beef with religious music at all. It's that particular song that just irks the piss out of me. The problem is that it's a song about quitting.Quote:

For the sake of the rest of this post, we're going to pretend I'm the son my mother hoped I thought I would be -- as devoutly religious as they get. Religious opinions and/or beliefs expressed may not be those I actually hold:
We're taught that God will not give us any more than we can handle -- ok, I'm cool with that. I've been through some incredibly rough patches in my life, and with God's help, I made it through. But it was always with God's help. God helps those who helps themselves -- isn't that what we're taught? Well, the song's protagonist isn't helping themselves -- they're just saying "oh fuck it, I've had enough. Here, you take over. If I skid into a tree and my baby is killed, well, at least it won't be my fault -- Jesus decided not to save her". Fuck that. "Jesus Guide My Hand" would've made for a much better theme.
In which car would you rather be a passenger?
1) Spinning out on a patch of black ice, the driver throws her hands up and says "Please Jesus, guide this vehicle to safety!"
2) Spinning out on a patch of black ice, the driver turns into the skid and applies the brakes with a pumping motion, saying "Please Jesus, help me guide this vehicle to safety!"
Driver 1 is a fucking useless quitter who deserves the wreck she's heading for.
(Note: I understand the thought that it's a metaphor for "giving your life over to Jesus and his teachings". If that's what the songwriter intended, ok then -- never mind. However, they then suck even worse as a songwriter for using crappy imagery.)
(Note 2: None of this changes my opinion that Danny, as much of a glurgemeister as he is, is a terrific vocalist.)
This seems wrong after Hal's thoughtful Jesus song post but...
Heck, I almost threw my panties at him. What a difference from the past weeks! Where has this guy been hiding?Quote:

Still hate Megan. Please get well so there are no excuses, and then go home.
Sad to see Alexis go. The desperation of her final performance fit the song, but I wish she had been able to hold it together vocally. That might have saved her.
Thanks for that response, Hal. More than I expected, but enlightening. :)
Count me as "me too" on Alexis. There just was no there there.
Country week blows goats.
Anyone being eliminated that wasn't Megan is a travesty of justice. That piece of crap can't sing! Her "dancing" style of flailing her arms around like Baloo from Jungle Book is idiotic. She has the flu and had trouble as a result? Too fucking bad -- I've heard nothing from her to this point to suggest that she'd have been any better if she had been healthy. And her stupid tat sleeve is stupid. And after Simon commented on how good she looked and the camera panned up her dress, I think I could see her left nipple ring shining through the fabric, making her even grosser and trashier than I originally thought. No, I don't think Alexis would have won the competition -- my money's on Danny Gokey -- but she should have outlasted Megan. Yet another horrible decision by the morons who do the voting.
P.S. Adam's shrieking side-show this week was ghastly (to use one of Simon's favourite terms of endearment). And it wasn't country. Taking a country song and turning it into... that... does not prove you can work within a particular genre. Last year, when they had show tunes week, David Cook didn't turn his song into some angsty alt-rock number; he simply played it straight and flat out killed it. Like most weeks last year, he could have finished his song, droppped the mike on the stage and walked off without waiting for the judges comments 'cuz he was head and shoulders better than his competition. Adam doesn't have that luxury, nor did he demonstrate to me that he's capable of extending himself even a little bit. He sucks. And he has stupid hair.
But, dread pirate, tell us how you really feel!
"Jesus is just alright with me" is alright with me. People who like to shove their religion in everyone else's face get on my nerves, and we can call THAT cultural - in Canada, religion is considered a private matter.
