An urban fox has been found living in the upper floors of the Shard building. The Shard will be Europe's tallest building when completed and the fox, nicknamed Romeo, was found on the 72nd floor of the construction site.
Apparently he was surviving from food left behind by the builders.
More here.
What a Fantastic Mr Fox. :P
Aw, he's cute. It's interesting, here in Chicago, it's VERY rare to see a fox in urban areas. I remember once I saw one dashing across a busy 4-lane road right by a huge shopping mall, but every other time I've spotted one it's been in rural areas or the woods. Seems like from that article it's more common in London. Here, we get coyotes! Sometimes they're seen just strolling down the street in the city.
I get the impression that foxes fill the space in the British urban ecosystem that raccoons fill in much of North America. If some disease wiped out our raccoons, I wonder if foxes would fill the vacant niche.
That is one of the things I distinctly recall from visiting England as a kid, the urban foxes. I've seen the odd fox here but where I live has rural areas in pretty much every direction within a mile or so.Quote:

There are a lot of urban foxes around and have filled out a niche raiding rubbish bins and are quite adaptable in surviving in towns.
On that note, saw one in my back garden yesterday just passing through.

We rarely see foxes traveling through our backyard. I need to find a way to get them to move in though. I would love to see them wipe out the young groundhogs each year. Foxes are about the only cure for groundhog infestation. I wonder if there is any methods to encourage them to stay? On the other hand, we would have to be even more careful about letting the Dot (our young cat) outside.
Foxes are pretty amazing, I would like to see more on the Russian domestication of the silver fox. We generally have red foxes in this area.
