I begin with the impression that airport security has been made more onerous without significantly improved the effectiveness of the security measures. So, when I see a story like this one, it tends to confirm my impressions.
I don't know how White was bypassing airport security - but that sure sounds like a gaping hole in the security measures.Quote:

Hey, those things hurt! Yeah, part of the reason Jim and I have started taking car trips for all our vacations is the insanity in airports. Our onerous ordeal crossing the US border by car - wait in a short line, customs guard asks us where we're from, where we're going, how long we're staying, any produce in the car, and looks at our passports. Just how strict are the rules in the USA for boarding an airplane?
I'm actually heading to the airport in a few hours, so here's what'll go down:
Once I'm in the airport I'll have to check in at the counter for my airline. I'm not checking any baggage, just a carryon. I'll then proceed to security, which blocks off the 'lobby' of the airport from the terminal. I'll have to show my ticket and a photo ID to prove I'm the same person. I'll then go through a line and Ill have to take off my shoes and any metal objects, and place them in a bin. My laptop will go into a bin, and my carry on bag will go into another bin. All of this gets run through an x-ray machine to make sure I'm not harboring any bombs or a regular-sized bottle of shampoo. I'll go through a body scanner or metal detector or whatever they're using now and if TSA decides I'm good enough, I'll get to go put my shoes back on and go get on my plane.
If you fail any one of these steps, if you look or act suspicious in the eyes of the TSA, or if you make a visible effort to bypass any of these steps, you can be detained and I would guess beaten. I don't really know.
The last time my mother flew out to visit my sister, I took her to the airport. I went to security and got a gate pass and a wheelchair because she's 90 years old and blind. Showed up at the checkpoint after loading her up and rolling her in. Guess which one of the two of us got shaken down and wanded?
