Not a user myself, but what's the harm in keeping it public?
I'm ambivalent, but inclined to agree with Harlequin. I think it might encourage people to join if they can see the community "in action".

It's just one of those things, like pms, imo. There's no public interest, like forum threads. If you want to read or participate, sign up.
Why? Who cares? It's not like people signing up confers any benefit to the site other than membership stats. It'd be one thing if it was paid membership, but since it isn't it's a moot point.
Well, so long as everyone who chats keeps in mind at all times not to say anything they don't want snarky folks to take away as ammo, I suppose keep it open to all... I'd rather it were kept less open myself, though.
Seeing second-to-second action can draw people in. It reminds people that right now, there are people wtaching the forum.
I don't know, but I think it will help. There's nothing incriminating in there, anyway.
Something tells me we haven't seen the last of foreshadowing.
I agree with AllWalker, I think it is helpful to the board with it viewable. I understand the other side of it, but I think it does more good than bad. Maybe if the board gets busy enough, we could have other chats and have some private. I have no idea.
How is anything any one of us posts here any less public, though? Really?Originally posted by Zabigail
Anyone in the world can sign up for membership and read/post here. It's not like we have to pay to post, or verify who we are. Membership isn't restricted to some regulated community of pious saints - anyone on the internet can join. That's pretty public already.
Trying to hide chat because it might give the snarkers ammo is as stupid an idea as trying to make rules about how people can use socks.
Besides, chat is a great feature of the site. You want people to be able to see what's going on, get a feel for the environment and get sucked in.
Edited to add: You fail to recognize one of the most basic tenets about snark: we are our own enemy. Making it public/private won't affect what shows up in the snark communities. C'est la guerre.
Well, it had to happen sooner or later. I agree 100% with JETGIRL.

I think it's good that it's public because it might encourage people passing by to sign up.
I didn't make the world this way, it was like this when I got here
I really wasn't looking for people's opinions.
Chat should be public. No harm in it.

If you don't agree with me, kindly shut the fuck up and start your own thread about how happy you are that chat is public.
Really? That's how you think it works? You start a thread where you give your opinion on how part of the board works and nobody is allowed to give an opposing opinion?
Pray tell, just how did you see this thread panning out?Originally posted by SeeOhTwo

Its nice to see that the mods have been so consistent about not allowing snark outside of the Thunderdome.
Ok, admittedly I haven't gone through all the rules with a fine-toothed comb, but I don't see anything that prohibits being a little snarky anywhere. The rules say no personal insults or trolling outside of the Thunderdome, but they don't say we have to be all sweetness and light all the time either.Originally posted by bwhitman
Yeah, the mods here suck - If they were any good, they'd have banned you by now, right?Originally posted by bwhitman
I must have missed the "no snark outside the 'Dome" rule. Can you be a good lad and point it out for me? Thanks!Originally posted by bwhitman
No, thanks. This thread serves the purpose more than adequately.Originally posted by SeeOhTwo
Posters, even a newbie, understand this, however, every argument degenerates.

I agree that it isnt in the rules anywhere, but no one seemed to care when I got suspended for it. I guess referring to Liberal's past drama is far worse than telling someone to shut the fuck up or calling them butthurt.
I really can't believe anyone took this seriously. Did I need a smiley? I thought that, and my subsequent post, were too absurd for that.Originally posted by SeeOhTwo
I don't get "butthurt" when people disagree with me on a message board, especially over something as trivial as chat. Honesly, lighten up y'all. Or are some of you just waiting, knives sharpened, for some fresh meat?

If you really wanna do the n with tilde quick and easy, hold down Alt and type 0241. As Bullwinkle would say, "Presto! You've got ñ."
Opportunity is missed by most people, because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. Thomas Edison
This is a perfect chance to explain the easiest way to type special Roman characters ever! Just go to (in Vista; I'm sure it's similar for XP) Control Panel->Regional and Language Options->Change Keyboards and click "Add". Then, select "United States-International". Now, not only can you press Right Alt and a key (plus the shifted version) to type another character; e.g. Alt+l ø, you can also put accent marks above any character by typing the character that resembles the accent and then the letter (it works mostly on vowels, although there are exceptions). The acute mark is ', like á; the grave is `, like à; the umlaut is ", like ä; the circumflex is ^, like â; the tilde is ~, like ã or ñ; and the apostrophe also does the cedilla on the c, like ç. It's that easy, and you can switch between the two keyboards at any time by pressing Ctrl-Shift. (Using the International one all the time can cause you to type Ï think," instead of "I think,", because you have to put a space after the punctuation mark if you're using it by itself.
A full chart of which letters type what when combined with the Alt key is here. (That is, the ones that can't be typed by the super-easy method, like æ, ©, ¢, £, and ¶.)

If you can offer more elaboration on why you think chat should be private, go ahead. I doubt you'll convince anyone, but that's what your opinion is for. We take it into consideration, decide if it has any value, and go from there. Currently, we are discarding your opinion about chat because it makes no sense, and it gets rid of a flashy feature that might draw people to the boards—constant activity that proves that the board is, in fact alive—and we are discarding your opinion about staying on topic because you have nothing more useful to say on the subject and because you are acting very childishly. But if you convince us otherwise, then we'll do otherwise. If you continue to be such an annoyance, we will develop a prejudice towards you and be biased against your future suggestions.
