Default New Name for Great Debates

This is the only forum that still has a SDMB name. I'm thinking it needs a new one. Personally, I'm partial to "Plato's Academy" but other suggestions are welcome.

When we've got enough suggestions, I'll do a poll and run it by Crispy for his final approval.

I wonder if it is possible to avoid the cite and parse debates that dominate GD on the Dope. I know that turned most posters off of GD.

I like Plato's Playground a lot actually. Throw my vote behind that as a new name.

ETA: #2 would be The Crucible and #3 Nerd Fight, if we are actually counting votes.

    Yes I do
    No you don't.
    That isn't really an argument.
    Yes it is.

Sorry....kinda fell into the Monty Python bit there. :geek:

Could just cut it down to Debates.

But I also like The Crucible.

    Slap Fight

    The Boxing Ring

    Slap Boxing for Jesus

There was a comedian or humorist, I don't remember who, who said that all drivers should get little arrows they could shoot at specific other cars and when the cars collected three arrows, the driver lost his or her license for a while.

We should have that in the debates forum. You collect three flags and you need to leave the thread for 24 hours. EAch poster has three flags they can give over the course of a month.

Yes, I know that would be impossible to do, but it would be nice to drive a kanicbird from the occasional thread.

Tard Fight is a terribly insensitive name for something like this. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy calling people tards in the Snackpit as much as the next guy, but that's just not kosher for this kind of board, IMO.

The problem with names like "nerd fight" is kind of what I was hinting at with "argument clinic". Is it supposed to be a debate, or a fight? Are we discussing, debating and deliberating, or merely arguing, fighting and not actually paying attention to what the other person is saying?

I'd rather avoid any name with "fight" or in the title or descriptive of combat.

I really like this idea. I'm not sure how it would work either, but it'd be great if it could be implemented.

As for the name: Since we're not going to have politics in our debate forum, it's necessarily going to be mainly philosophy, science and religion. I like Sophistry & Illusion best out of the names proposed so far, followed by Plato's Playground.

I don't like this three-flags rule, because I'm willing to bet people will just use it to silence the opinions they don't like.

Sorry, but what a bunch of silly names.
    Nerd Fight? Sophistry & Illusion?

They don't really sum up what the forum is very well.
What's wrong with something that has "Debates" in the title?
Deep Thoughts, Deep Discussion, Debates, Great Debates, General Debates.. they all sum up the idea of the forum nicely without any unnecessary wank.

The Soapbox kind of sounds like a place for ranting. As though someone has stood up on their "Soapbox" and has spoken their mind.
    Are you people actually thinking?
When has "soapbox" ever implied a debate of a exchange of thoughts/ideas?
Honestly, it's like you're trying to make things as wanky or difficult as possible.

What is wrong with "Great Debates"? or "Debates" or anything that even IMPLIES a debateZ?
