Default Yea or Nay: Theme weddings

You're invited to a wedding, and it's a Star Wars/Hobbit/RenFaire/etc theme! Everyone's encouraged to come in costume! Are you planning your costume out right now, or trying to figure out how you can get out of it?

And what do you think about the bride and groom? Is this a fun and festive way to celebrate their union, or is it an embarrassing display of self-indulgence?

Whatever the happy couple wants to do is fine with me. As long as they don't deny me drinks because my post-apocalyptic space pirate costume lacks the correct number of buckles or whatever.

It is a little goofy and if I don't like the theme I would probably just beg out of it but it seems fine overall to me.

    Can't it be both?

My wedding will be penguin themed and all guests will be required to bring a pebble for building the ceremonial rock nest. I am partial to polished river stones, FYI. Decorative eggs for stocking the nest are optional.

Seriously though, a wedding is a ceremony. Whatever the people involved think is appropriate is right for them. I may have no interest in being part of it, but the whole thing is self-indulgence at its finest, whether they're having a traditional western Christian ceremony or doing it in leopard print loincloths in a field while a porn star dressed as Commander Riker officiates.

I actually was in the bridal party for a neo-pagan, renaissance themed wedding officiated by a (female) porn star, who also happened to be a priestess. My cousin (the bride) drove me insane with her demands for everyone to sew their own period authentic costumes. I had to dress as a shepherdess and she complained about how my bodice was apparently the wrong cut for her chosen century.

For this, I will force her to dress as a walrus at my wedding.

Yeah, it was really, really bad. It was whatever the Ren Faire equivalent of Bridezilla would be.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

I hope you make her sew it herself.

I will. And then complain when she doesn't make it look exactly like the real thing.

Z, I love you. I adore you. I'm not going to your wedding.
So, I'll whisper in the dark, hoping you'll hear me.

I'll be there, with bells on.

One thing I hate and will vociferously object to even if or as it happens: one of the marrying couple shoving cake into the mouth of the other one. :grrrrr:

But rocks, penguin droppings, acres of ice, and raw fish?

I am SO up for that.

ugh cake shoving. So gross. I don't know what my wedding will be like. But I know a few things: there will be NO FUCKING FONDANT ON THE CAKE, and [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHDkmINbefQ]this song[/url will play at some point. Possibly as a duet.

Theme weddings? Knock yourself out. If I think it'll be too much work, I ain't going though.
I don't think so, therefore I'm probably not.

I wouldn't do it, myself. I'd rather my own wedding ceremony be as short and simple as possible. And unless I really really liked the friend or family member getting married I probably wouldn't attend if I were forced to dress up as a damn hobbit or something.

But where I'm not involved? Sure, why not?

I think it's fun and tacky. I'd probably never have a theme wedding myself, but I might engage in one assuming I didn't have to do anything too unpleasant.
