Default Westboro Baptist Church at it again.

This time they are going to picket the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards, who died from breast cancer, having battled it for six years, and still had to put up with John Edwards.

And the reason: She was not sufficiently public enough about her faith during her life.

    WTF???

They just hit a new low even for them.

As a Christian, I just want to point out that these people do not speak for me. Period. Pretty sure what they're doing qualifies as the opposite of witnessing, so...yeah. WBC=Evil

I know, Marsilia, I feel the same way. I swear, I think I would be flattered if they picketed my funeral...I would figure I must have done something right.

They're IRL trolls. They'll protest anywhere if they think it'll garner attention/outrage.

Rumor 'round these parts is that Fred is ailing and may not be long for this world. One wonders how they feel about the old "turnabout is fair play" adage.

I wonder how long it's going to be before someone opens up on them with a shotgun.

I've thought about that, too, Clothahump. I'm kind of surprised it hasn't happened already...people don't always act rationally when they're already upset about the death of a loved one, you know? Seems like they are setting themselves up to have someone let loose on them.

Oh, I hope none of them get shot at a protest! That would give them martyrs, and can you imagine how they could spin that?

Yes, that is exactly what they hope will happen. They want people to spit on them. They want people to hit them. They want people to counter protest. They are indeed trolls and will use any attention or reaction at all as further fuel for their fire.
So now they are just dirt-covered English people in fur pelts with credit cards.

As long as the shotgun in question is loaded with bat guano, I support this vigilante action fully.

Plus they're all lawyers, and they want to get someone else to throw the first punch so they can sue.

Hasn't anybody been able to sue them for distress?

As I understand it they stay just far enough away from whatever it is they are picketing that they can win on free speech grounds.

The other thing to remember is that because they're all lawyers, they can spin out proceedings until the people suing them run out of cash to pay for lawyers. AIUI while a damages suit can be billed on a contingency basis, no lawyers will take a libel suit on anything but cash on the barrelhead. Pro se representation doesn't have many benefits over more traditional representation, but it does simplify things at billing time.

Apparently, they (or, another group with a similar MO) are planning to protest Christina Green's funeral in Arizona. O_o

I thought so. The info I got described their past exploits, but didn't name them.

That's insulting to trolls, troglodytes, and other cave dwellers.

However, they are rushing through legislation to prevent them coming within 300 feet of mourners.

So, after heading down to Jackson to troll--I mean protest the funeral of a fallen Marine, WBC sent a delegation on down to Pensacola, FL. Why were they there? Why, to protest a Less Than Jake show, of course! A bunch of dudes in jeans and band tees playing ska music about drinking and slacking (not even screwing) incurred the wrath of this hate group. They don't even have any gay or former military members (and no dead children in the band, either)!

I guess I've been reading a faulty Bible "Thou shalt not have fun without me" is absent, along with "Blessed are the hate mongers." Oh, well! I got the feeling (after telling a guy to "read the Jesus parts" of the Bible was met with a look of incomprehension) that they got Spark Notes' "Angry Bits of the Bible" and built their pretend church around that.

From the things you were texting me before we realized who they were, they actually sound crazier than I'd thought. I'd always kind of viewed them as some sort of hateful performance art thing, where they had some self-awareness and were just trying to get attention. But they in all sincerity protested at a Less Than Jake concert?

    I just...what the hell?

Zuul, when Panda told the guy that Jesus loves everybody in her best Lady Gaga voice, I think it was my favorite part. His best comeback was Jacob and Esau.

When people completely disregard the forgiveness and love of Jesus, I kind of wonder what they think being a Christian means. I always thought that was the whole point.

My thoughts exactly. And, how in hell's bells is screaming at people, calling them names, and telling them they're damned supposed to bring anybody to Jesus? It's an...interesting, but likely ineffective witnessing tactic.

I sometimes wonder if they think Jesus was a wuss for letting people off with forgiveness and such, and because they didn't get some personally, nobody else is gonna get any.

Yeah, I don't get the mentality of these people, either. It's fascinating to me that the hippie-dippie "radically inclusive" style of Christianity that's practiced around me is considered the same religion as the fire-and-brimstone stuff these Phelps people seem to like. Makes me wonder what Jesus thinks of the whole thing.

Jesus is going, "What the hell is this all about? Did you even READ my actual words? All I was trying to do is get to you be better Jews!"
