    The rules:

A previous SDMB thread, so you can see how it goes:
    http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/...d.php?t=626545

    House rules:
Please label indirect questions "IQ," and when you've earned one, label direct questions "DQ." No more than three IQs at a time, please. The name of the mystery person that's the subject of a round could be either a first or a last name. Please, NO RESEARCH of any sort! You must rely on your memory. The person who leads the round can do research ONLY in order to assure a correct answer to the other players.

No, I'm neither Ed Grimley nor Dale Earnhardt.

IQs should ideally be more focused. Those are more like DQs, which you have to earn (and will help you narrow the field to who I'm thinking of).

I've not played this game before now, but I love the idea. Would you mind giving me an example or two of what you mean by more focused?

The host of a Botticelli game wants to be challenged, so an indirect question should be hard to find a suitable answer for.

Try Is there a programming language named after you?

How many DQs do we get anyway?

Sorry, I could only read the wiki rules, the SDMB is too risky a proposition for my work computer.

    Thanks, kk, and you're right.

You get 20 DQs, and then each player who's already earned at least one DQ gets to ask a single "Are you [firstname lastname]?" question.

Dunno about the programming language person. Take a DQ.

OK, since you answered my IQ with "No, I'm not..." and came up with someone who met my criteria other than whom I'm thinking of, I stay in IQ mode for the time being, correct? And if so, can I continue to ask IQs while Orual and kk fusion are asking DQs, or do I freeze and wait until after they've asked?

The language in question was named after Agner Krarup Erlang (Danish mathematician and engineer).

    DQ: Are you currently alive?

As a clarification for those new to the game, a fictional character is never considered 'alive'.

OCS, the way I interpret the house rules, everyone may ask IQs as long as no more than three such questions are still open.

Yes, if my answer is correct as to your IQ, even if you had someone else in mind, then you remain in IQ mode. You can keep asking, up to three IQs at a time per player, regardless of what other players are doing. You can also rephrase your earlier IQs to narrow the focus. For instance, if the letter was W and the question was, "Were you a President of the United States?" and I answered, "No, I'm not George Washington" even though you were thinking of Woodrow Wilson, you could rephrase your IQ to, "Were you a President of the United States who refused to compromise on the League of Nations." That would be a pretty easy IQ, but you get the idea. Generally, you want to ask IQs that are narrowly focused enough that there's only one correct answer... and I don't know it!

You also don't need to use italics... unless you prefer to.

I'm only using italics for questions about rules, which should hopefully get less frequent as we go.

Just to make it clear: the IQs you ask aren't limited by the answers I've already given to DQs. As long as the person you have in mind has a first or last name starting with "E," and has not already been asked about, you may ask about him or her.
