The Saarland, the state in which I live is the smallest in Germany that isn't just a single city. It's pretty close to 1000 square miles although people here tend to think of that as a bit over 2500 square km. That seems to be just the right size for countless size comparisons. When my state is mentioned in the media it is very likely supposed to help people visualize an oil spill, drought, flood or forest fire. In fact hearing the latter on the radio a few minutes ago inspired this thread.
