    Default Universal Remotes

Does anyone have any experience with a universal remote that can replace an HD cable box' remote, as well as the TV's remote, especially with programmable macros (or even automatic ones) that turn on and off the cable box and the TV at the same time.

My father is to the point, mentally, where he can't be counted upon to remember he has to turn off both components when he turns off the TV. And since he's got to use the control channel for the cable remote to change stations he's been just turning off the cable box at night. If an LCD screen isn't going to burn out like a CRT might, I'm not going to flail about the energy waste, but I can't see the point to letting things continue if it's going to keep wearing out the TV for no one's benefit.

Any and all other possible work-around suggestions are welcomed, as well.

Two possibilities. Often the cable box has a TV outlet so that it can shut of the TV with the cable box. The other possibility is most cable remotes can be programmed to control the TV and even shut it off and some macro the power button to shut off both.

Some universal remotes, including mine, have an "all off" button that turns everything off without the need for elaborate macros.

My TV can be set up to turn itself off after 10 minutes of no input.

I have a Logitech universal remote that turns off everything with a single push of a button, and I love it. It's the first truly universal remote that I've ever owned, and I didn't know anything could be so wonderful. It controls my television, cable box, xbox, blu ray player, and stereo. It doesn't do more because I don't own any more electronics.

Having said that, you should be able to program the cable box remote to control the television. If you do that, it would be possible to turn off both by hitting the power button, or just turning off the television by hitting the TV button.
I'm still swimming in harmony. I'm still dreaming of flight. I'm still lost in the waves night after night...

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. When I had the chance, today, to RTFM for the remote that came with the cable box, it does have the ability to do power as a macro. So that's fixed, now.
