Default What, if any, canned foods do you keep around?

I just mentioned in the appliance thread that for years I didn't own even a manual can opener, as we never consumed canned food.

Things have changed, though. As much as I hate to admit it, I keep the following canned food around:

tomato paste, tomato sauce, and whole tomatoes
    mandarin oranges
    evaporated milk
baked beans (Bush's or Heinz only)
chickpeas and red beans (for when I don't have time to soak dried)
    tuna
refried lard, I mean beans (YES I AM ASHAMED, OKAY?)

...and probably a couple of other things I'm not thinking of.

What canned foods do you keep around?

I've got canned condensed cream of mushroom soup. But at this point, it's relic food, and when I finally use it up, it won't be replaced.

I have some canned tomato paste.

I'm out of canned soup at the moment, but I do use it. It's convenient, but lately it all tastes too damned salty to me. Especially the low sodium versions. (AIUI the manufacturer replaces the added sodium chloride with 100-150% of the saltiness value of potassium chloride. Why they can't consider simply reducing all the salt added is frustrating for me.)

Finally I have some canned pasta sauces - tomato and pesto.

I'm not counting the stuff I've home canned, however, otherwise I'd have to mention the gallons of homemade salsa I've got.

    Tomato paste
    Crushed tomatoes
Evaporated milk (for my mashed potatoes)
    Green beans
    Crab meat
    Tuna
Corned beef hash (I love this stuff and have to ration myself)
    Peach slices

Refried beans for certain, as well as really nasty canned Mexican rice that I like to mix together and nuke for a quick meal on the go.

And fruit cocktail, because I love fruit cocktail. And then tomato paste/sauce/whole/diced whatever. Canned new potatoes because they are good when grilled, and maybe some random veggies if they're on sale. Really that's about it.

Right now, just canned black beans, because I do not have the time nor the inclination to deal with dried beans.

That's one of the things that a crock pot does really well.

Tomatoes in all varieties: paste, sauce, diced, crushed, etc.
    Tuna and crab
Several kinds of beans for use in quickie recipes, especially great northern and black.
Spaghetti-os and chicken noodle soup for the kids (ok, sometimes for us as well)
Skyline chili, to put on hotdogs
Evaporated and sweetened condensed milk, for baking

Aha! I forgot the canned pastas. I have an extensive array of Chef Boyardee and Franco American cans in the house. I seriously love Spaghetti-O's with meatballs and Chef Boyardee Pepperoni Pizza-rolis.

Tomato stuff: diced, chunked, pureed, sauced, pasted
Beans: I only do dried beans for bean soup, chili and such gets canned stuff, and of course there's refried beans, who actually makes those?
Condensed and evap milk for baking/cooking
Canned fruit/pie filling for dessert making
    Cream o'whatever for cooking
Regular soups for eating, but nobody here likes the canned pastas
    Tuna and chicken

The only notable exceptions are canned veggies, we do fresh or frozen, and I'm not above gravy in a packet for a quick meal, but don't like the canned gravies.

    Tomatoes
    Coconut milk
    Corn

That's it. All the other foodstuffs are dried, fresh or frozen. But we've talked about stocking up properly on canned foods in case of Zombie Apocalypse.

    Cream of mushroom soup
Canned salmon or chicken (that's the basis of a casserole right there, add pasta, peas, and some rosemary and yum!)
    Refried beans (vegetarian)
    Pineapple

I haven't recently but I usually also have:
    Bamboo shoots
    Water chestnuts

Get some meat and you've got a pretty good stir fry right there

Hey, they work; that's all that counts, isn't it? They are soaked in brine, if that helps?

I got some in a care package, once.

I don't know if there is some secret to making it edible. If there is, it's not mentioned on the can. I found it reminiscent of styrofoam. Aromatic styrofoam, but still styrofoam.

True, but that's when you make it yourself in a can. I used to buy those big cans of Maxwell House coffee solely to repurpose the can as a brown bread pan.

(Does anyone here know what I'm talking about, besides silenus?)

Of course, I do, Hatshepsut. That's why I was willing to try the brown styrofoam. I was hoping it would taste like coffee can bread.

Yes, it's just a quick bread leavened with baking powder/soda, traditionally made by steaming it in coffee cans. Here's a simple recipe, although if memory serves the version I used to make had a bit of rye flour in it. Anyway, it's kind of spongy because of the steaming, and all the molasses gives it a distinctive taste.
