    Default Google Chrome OMG!!!!!

Do any of you have this as your browser?

    Holy crap! Wholly crap!

I got tired of IE8 cutting out on me 3-4 times an hour (don't know why) and decided to use Chrome instead.

Big mistake, for da Quas' (given what's going on with me as a caveat, of course)!

First off, I get this thing which looks like modern art and it asks me to choose something and so I do. Then what?

    I don't know.

Nowhere to go from there, so hell, I'm having so much trouble with the fact that this 64 bit Vista is not accepting many programs (I also now have the 32 bit option - after a lot of trial and error - which I use) that I panicked and went to System Restore thinking that if I didn't, I'd have to go through that "we don't like your 64 bit computer, so there!" thing, and brought back IE 8!

    Whew! What a relief!

So I now have IE8 back with the same old crap, but at least I don't have to deal with the artsy-fartsy chrome which really doesn't have simple instructions for a simpleton such as I.

This computer also doesn't like Firefox, and I'm not really savvy enough to know what else to do, so I thought I'd come here and see if any of y'all have chrome and how's it workin' for you?

    Thanks

I've got Chrome. It's good because it doesn't hog memory like Firefox, but you're right in that it's not terribly intuitive. I've got a touchy mouse, too, and so sometimes when I'm switching between tabs I'll accidentally double click, which then turns the tab into a separate window.

I'm not sure what browser I'm going with as my default when I get my new computer. Probably Opera.

I'm currently using Chrome and Opera. Firefox is a resource hog and I hate IE. I agree that Chrome isn't as intuitive as Firefox (or what we're all used to in IE), but I vastly prefer it to Firefox. It's so fast and so light that once you get used to it, you'll wonder how you lived without it for so long.

Well, maybe I'll give someone remote access and let them fool with it. I'm scared I'll screw something up and there goes my WoW!

    Thanks

I have it installed, and use it for watching longer clips on YouTube (thanks to a long-standing bug with Firefox). I don't... dislike Chrome, but the lack of customization options is a real turn-off (compared to Firefox, where there are hundreds of useful extensions. Plus, as mentioned, Chrome isn't very intuitive. Even after using it for at least 30 minutes a week, I'm still not 100% sure where my few Chrome bookmarks are. Yes, Chrome is fast, but it only does around 30% of the stuff Firefox does on my system, so I stick with the 'Fox instead.

Also, I don't have the same orgasmic lovefest with all things Google like most everyone else in the SDMB\Giraffe\Mellophant universe has. I find it amusing that a subset of those users - the "Screw Microsoft!!!" crowd - is not only willing, but excited to give Google access to their emails, voice messages, chat conversations, map queries, Internet searches and the like. Google's main mission statement is "don't be evil", but I'm not sure I trust them on that.

I also have IE 8 on this system (Win7), and don't really have anything against it, I just prefer FF more.

    I'm with Tunaman.
Firefox is my browser of choice on both Vista and Linux. Have no problems with it.
Have used Chrome but while I don't dislike it I can't find much I like about it either.
Have used Safari, Opera, Maxthon and Netscape on Windows, use Galeon, Seamonkey, Kazahakase and Epiphany on Linux.
Firefox is always the default though.

When I first started using Vista (came with the laptop) it would kill any installed browser other than Firefox, sometimes within half an hour of installation.
Since I reinstalled Vista I haven't had a problem but still default to Firefox there too.

Never use IE, just don't like it one bit.

    Interesting.

But again, I have that 64 vs 32 bit problem and IE has the 32 bit versiob which is what allows me to play WoW and download Adobe/Java stuff.

This is why I'm hesitant to try Firefox or any other browser right now.

BTW I play an iBUYPOWER AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 4GB

Wife has XP on her set with IE8 and she's happy with it.

I just wish Microsoft had worked out some of the bugs in Vista before they went to 7.

Those of us who cannot afford to buy 7 seem to me to be "left out in the cold" because of the performace issues.

That's why I mentioned before I'd rather someone remote-accessed me before I screw something up.

    Thanks

Well, there's really no benefit to using a 64-bit browser and a lot of downsides. A 64-bit browser should run slightly faster (maybe 10% faster, on the order of milliseconds) on the same hardware. But many plug-ins and extensions won't work with x64 software (Adobe has promised an x64 version of Flash for what? Two years now?).

I upgraded this computer to Win7 in early October, and since then I don't think I've *ever* run IE8 x64. I use the 32-bit version of Firefox all day long, and am mostly happy with it.

One thing you could do is try out the "portable" versions of Firefox and Chrome. Just create a new folder on your desktop, and when the installer asks where you want it installed, choose the desktop folder instead of a USB drive. All you'd then need to do is open the folder and click on FIREFOX.EXE or CHROME.EXE to try it out. Since everything is installed in that folder, you can simply delete the desktop folder when you're done and the app will be gone. (Note that you can't run two different versions of most browsers AT THE SAME TIME - you can have Firefox 3.5.5 installed on your desktop and a folder with the portable Firefox 3.6 beta, but you can't run them simultaneously.)

Firefox is great if you like to tinker. There are a million and one extensions and scripts that make it a thousand times more useful than any other browser. On the other hand, if all you want to do is surf the 'Net in peace, maybe Chrome or Safari is for you.

If I set up another account on my computer with admin status, can I install Chrome or Opera, say, and experiment with it there?
To sleep, perchance to experience amygdalocortical activation and prefrontal deactivation.

Well, you could. But what's the point? You can have as many browsers installed as you have disk space for (I have IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari installed on this box). You can even run them simultaneously (I have Firefox and Chrome open right now). Installing them as another user simply means that you may (or may not) get shortcuts to them in the Start Menu of your own account - the files will still be there, and you can run them with a double-click.

If you really want to run them in a "sandbox" (with not possibility of screwing up your system), either run a portable version or run it in a virtual machine.

Just reinstall Vista already. You'd be amazed what problems you can fix by just reinstalling your OS.
