If you want to kiss the sky, you'd better learn how to kneel.
It is not possible through their normal interface but there are several ways to do that.
Probably the easiest is something like KeepVid which gives you proper download links for Youtube files.
There are also various browser add-ons and stand-alone applications.
FireFox has an excellent Add-On. Look for Download Helper 4.6.4
If you are using Linux, once the video is fully loaded it is in the temp folder. Either rename it or drag it into another folder - or both. It will remain there until you delete it and the media player will play it without further jiggery pokery.

Yeah, and I think this would work okay in Windows too. Either way, the video file should end up in your browser cache, and you can just drag it where you want. It'll be in FLV format, which you can play with VLC video player, which is available for every platform.
But a Firefox plugin to automate it is probably your best choice, and there's a bunch of those.
DownloadHelper also can convert it to play it in iTunes/on your iPod.

Does DownloadHelper download YouTube videos in every format? (All the example screencaps had FLV files in them).
I'm currently using a freeware app called YouTubeDownloader HD because it supports downloading ALL YouTube formats, including 720p (the last time I checked, my KeepVid type sites and most Firefox extensions only supported "regular quality" (FLV) or "high quality" (MP4), bit not 720p.
I also use an extension called FlashGot for non-YouTube stuff (I just did some limited testing, and it doesn't seem to work with YT).
Yes, it does download all formats of YouTube videos.

Well, hi. I got it. Thanks for the tip- I used Safari ( though Firefox is my main browser ), downloaded KeepVid, used a plug-in for my player and voila.
Now, I have to figure out how to create one of those blisteringly hilarious Hitler Rant videos without outing myself.
But....that's another thread.
Thank you all for the tips. Quite excellent help, as usual. Viva Mello !!!!
