Default 90's Top 40 appreciation thread

Nostalgia for 80's (and previous decades) music is fairly popular, but I rarely see it for the 90's. But the 90's were my decade, and I love the music from it (though there are a lot of guilty pleasures on that list). So how about it, what radio hits from the 90's did you love?

Building a Mystery - Sarah McLachlan
    One Headlight - The Wallflowers
No Excuses - Alice in Chains
    Hey Jealousy - Gin Blossoms
Taumpy: Oh noes, you aren't a super powerful wave of destruction.
Panther Squad: It's true! My scythe does not shorn the biomonsters in great swaths like it ought!

I think the US Top 40 diverged more from the Top 40 here during the '90s. A lot of those college(?) or MOR rock numbers that were huge successes in the US barely made a dent here but I'll go with:
    Mr Jones - Counting Crows
Breakfast At Tiffany's - Deep Blue Something

Of course Britpop was huge in the '90s so I'd have to also suggest

Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger (that is still played incessantly now)
    Blur - Charmless Man

Oh, man, I LOVED 90s music. Really, truly, loved it. I loved the grunge and harder stuff, loved the pop. If we're talking just about the stuff you heard on the radio, here are some that stand out in my mind:

    Smashing Pumpkins: Disarm
    Barenaked Ladies: Brian Wilson
    Pearl Jam: Black
    Sister Hazel: All for You
Smash Mouth: Walking on the Sun
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Under the Bridge
Nine Inch Nails: Head Like a Hole
    Blind Melon: No Rain

It doesn't feel like the 90's is far gone enough to need nostalging. If that's not a word it is now, god bless the malleability of the English language.

    Some lesser-known of my favorites;

Well there was a Britpop revival a few years ago. I think 10 years is well enough time to become nostalgic.

When I think of 90s music, I think of EnVogue, Babyface, Genesis, The Police, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, Jon B, The Fugees, Eric Clapton, GunsNRoses, Alanis Morrissette, Arrested Development, Creed, Nirvana, The Notorious Big...

AFAIK the Police didn't release anything in the 1990s.

I agree that ten years is long enough. Also, 80's nostalgia started insanely early. I remember it starting around 1995. That is too soon. Great picks everyone! (Sarah, I love almost every song on your list)

    Some early 90's pre-grunge favorites:

Keep On Walking - CeCe Peniston
    Come Undone - Duran Duran
Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover - Sophie B Hawkins

Also I loved Wilson Phillips' first album. I should probably be embarrassed by that. Oh well.

So many bands I miss from the 90s

The Verve, Breeders,Luscious Jackson, and some more I can't recall off the top of my head.

Damn I want the 90s fashions to come back into style so I can dress like a slacker and have it be acceptable.

Here are some more that rocked my socks (and the charts in the 1990s)

    by Whale
    .
by All 4 One - This version is from Brit-TV's Top Of The Pops.
by Big Mountain - Reggaefied smash version of the Peter Frampton(?) song.

People, people, people. You should know better than to give me an excuse to post this stuff. Here are a couple of my teenage obsessions:

    Savage Garden -
    Pearl Jam -
    The Verve -

And here's a bit of self-indulgent angst from when people really knew how to wallow:

    Stabbing Westward -

    Torn--Natalie Imbruglia
This song is one that I never particularly liked, but it's burned into my brain so permanently that I can't help but sing along with it when it comes on the radio.

There's a lot of music in here. Quite easily a best of the 90s list. Or I think they call the 90s Buzz.

But to add a little flavor to the mix,

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
Ready or Not - The Fugees (Won't list the more overly played song cover they were popular for)
    Tennessee - Arrested Development
It's All about the Benjamins - Puff Daddy
Big Poppa - The Notorious Big
I Get Around - Tupac Shakur
Award Tour - A Tribe Called Quest

    I'll be back with more.

I love a ton of the stuff mentioned. The 90s were a treasure trove of great singles, truly.

Silence mentioned Smells Like Teen Spirit. I think that's one of the greatest rock songs ever written.

Does anyone remember Reel Big Fish's song Sell Out?

Some that you all have reminded me of here that I loved: Everything Zen, Semi-Charmed Life and Father of Mine.

Also really really liked Sublime, particularly Wrong Way, What I Got, and Santeria.
