Default Battle of the breakfast breads

Let's see who wins out in the breakfast bread battle royal.

Myself, I'm a biscuits man. Nothing goes better with breakfast than dense, buttery, sits like a rock biscuits.

Tough choice. I picked french toast, because it's awesome when done right. But I'm torn, because Belgian waffles with whipped butter and syrup are pretty damn good too.

While both waffles and pancakes can be awesome in their way, I've gotta give it up for the biscuits. Doubly so if there's sausage gravy involved.

Now that is an anglocentric poll if I ever saw one.

I'll pick a croissant, a nice bread roll or a slice of sourdough bread.

Those are lunch or dinner foods for the most part in America. Crossiants could make it, but I've only ever had those for breakfast at hotels where I suspected they were just foisting off last nights leftovers.

Potato Bread is pretty fuckin delicious as are Soda Farrells but you can't beat a nice couple of slices of (Irish) Sliced Pan toasted and buttered with (Irish) butter. Heaven!

Cluricaun, you suck, how could you forget bagels?

A GOOD bagel, toasted, and with a schmear of cream cheese. The "good" part is the trick...they are hard to come by.

I did forget bagels. Donuts too. I was thinking of a real breakfast though, something you sit down to not something you eat on the go.

Yes, it's interesting tha for some reason the ideas of a normal breakfast are so different.

That reminds me of a thread somewhere else where a poster was convinced that even in continental Europe a "Continental Breakfast" was just a scam perpetuated by hotels to cheat you out of a real breakfast.

What is a normal breakfast in Germany?

I seem to recall an exchange-student friend of my cousin saying it involved ... liverwurst.

Liverwurst Flakes, which is a cereal made from dried liverwurst and then you put buttermilk on top of it and eat that before strapping on your lederhosen and going off to the cuckoo clock factory. At least that's how I imagine it.

Washed down with a refreshing morning glass of Spaten Optimater, no doubt.

Except the glass is shaped like a giant boot and your grandmother comes downstairs to play the accordian while you drink it.

    Ah, Germany.

    Possibly. It's reasonably common.

The most common thing is some kind of bread or bread roll with cheese, cold cuts or jam.

Alternatively people eat cereals, some of it the same Kellogg's or Nestlé stuff that you can find all over the world, some muesli or plain rolled oats with milk (but usually not cooked.)

Boiled eggs are also traditional breakfast food.

Aside from boiled eggs and toast warm items are uncommon and certainly a normal breakfast does not involve a frying pan.

My wife makes great biscuits. I should remind her of this in fact. Maybe she'll make some Saturday.

My daughter actually makes excellent pancakes, so that would be my second choice.

So no eggs or bacon or anything? Not even sausage?

By the way. The correct answer to the question is PANCAKES! People, no matter how good the buiscut is (I lived in Texas for a while and my mother is from Alabama, I know from real biscuits) they are never as good as perfect pancakes. Even if served with sausage gravy.

I've never understood the appeal of pancakes. To me they are just a sodden mass of tasteless, sugary bread-like substance. I know, they are just a conveyance for butter and maple syrup - but I've had incredibly good maple syrup made on the farm at a friend's house in NH, and ever since then no ordinary maple syrup will do.

We have a serious split in our family over waffles. My husband likes classic waffles made with white flour, which I consider to be only one small step above pancakes. I do like waffles made with cornmeal, soy, wheat germ, and that sort of thing - then they have taste, texture, and nutrition. In the great battle for waffle hearts and minds, our son has not decided whether he favors mom or dad yet - we're both trying to claim him.

Waffles! They have those syrup/butter holding indentations.

Bagel with cream cheese just BARELY beats out biscuits and gravy. Mainly because I don't consider B & G a bread, it's a full-on MEAL...

I think the last option in the poll is gaining steam, not because Cluricaun forgot anything important, but just because it's fun to vote for he sucks.

I had never heard of coco bread before this post. Now I'm curious. Is it at all like Hawaiian bread?
