One male hairdresser I know is a friend of the family, is gay but is the biological father of a child from some previous relationship.
Another guy my wife goes to has mannerisms that might ping some people's gaydar but is married to a woman.
I remember reading somewhere (might have been Desmond Morris' The Naked Ape, which instantly discredits it) that since touching someone's hair can be a sexualized act men that cut women's hair for a living acted less overtly masculine in order to be less sexually threatening.
At this point it is probably a self-perpetuating stereotype. Since, correctly or incorrectly, it has become associated with being gay, a lot of straight men would avoid it as a career.
