    Default Your "desert island" albums.

I don't remember seeing this here before. But the idea is that you're stuck on a desert island and you only have five albums to listen to for the rest of your life. What would they be?

    Mine:

    1) Björk - Vespertine
    2) XTC - Skylarking
    3) Kate Bush - The Dreaming
    4) Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog
    5) Gustav Holst - The Planets Suite (not going to be particular about which recording)

Yeah, I came this close to being Abbey Road buddies with you guys. I have a mental top ten list (hence my difficulty in narrowing it down to five!) and Abbey Road is on there. That's an awesome fucking album without question.

Yeah, paring it down to 5 is really, really tough. I had to leave Nirvana AND The Who off the list. I feel like I don't even know myself.

Man, I thought I was being generous with 5. Usually when I see this question, it's 3!

Man, that's just cruel! I had to cut the Beatles and Coltrane just to get it down to five!

It's funny. He is a favorite of mine, but it's more that I don't get tired of him. Whereas my passion for others burns hotter, but cools off faster.

    If that makes sense.

I rediscovered Graceland maybe ten years ago, but it was totally familiar when I bought it again from hearing it at home when I was in the single digits. It just never wears out. She makes the sign of the teaspoon, he makes the sign of the wave. The poor boy changes clothes and puts on aftershave to compensate for his ordinary shoes.

That's my favorite song from that album. It's gorgeous.

"American Tune" pushes "Rhymin' Simon" over "Graceland" for me. But it's close.

I love American Tune...it is way overlooked in his catalog, in my opinion.

I'ma post in this thread again to say that I was thinking this over in the shower this morning and I came up almost the same list, except this time I chose A Love Supreme by Coltrane instead of the Squarepusher album.

It's hard to decide, you can't pick something real recent because it's only a safe choice once it's stood the test of time for a few years.

Billy Joel - Songs in the Attic
    Beatles - Abbey Road
Paul Simon - Concert in the Park (lot of music for a single pick!)
Ray Bryant - Here's Ray Bryant
Rolling Stones - Beggar's Banquet (or Exile on Main Street or Flash Point)

On a different day, might have to sub in a good recording of Mozart's 41st. Ditto John Lee Hooker - Live at the Cafe a Go Go. Of course, BB King's Live From Cook County Jail could find its way onto the list.

Picking 5 sucks. No Dire Straits, Talking Heads.

Graceland rocks, BTW, but most of it is on Concert in the Park.

    Five albums? Yeesh.

With only five to name, I'm at risk not only of overlooking some of my favorite artists, but entire genres of music that I love. OK, so here are five, with an eye towards representing my musical tastes as well as possible. No particular order:

    The Clash, London Calling
    Celtic Frost, Into The Pandemonium
    Fugazi, 13 Songs
    The Beach Boys, Pet Sounds
    The Replacements, Tim

...and then I'll clock AndrewRyan on the head and take his albums, because four of those would be in my Top 20.

Rust in Peace was my #6 album, and Seasons is in the Top 10. I'm impressed that you picked it; it doesn't seem to be most people's favorite Slayer album.

I like Seasons because it's a definate maturation of the classic 80's sound of the band without being the odd nu-metal stylings of Divine Intervention forward. It's without a doubt my favorite Slayer album, which I've had to stand up for before in discussion. Lots of people really dislike it, but I think the recording quality is excellent and the overall tone of the album is just about perfect, it's the perfect mesh of the "Slayer Minor Tritone Riff" with the ability to write songs slower so that the dual guitar sound is intelligable.

It is an almost impossible choice.

    Cowboy Junkies Lay It Down.
    Heather Nova Wonderlust
Mylène Farmer Avant Que L'ombre (Live 2CD a Bercy)
    Happy Rhodes The Keep
    Zhong TingTing Eurasia No Hana

No - it's just too hard - can we make it 500 instead
