Awesome! Thanks for sharing this. We've nearly tripled our daily posting since Friday. Let us make the upward trend continue!

I turned your numbers into two simple charts. We'll have to do something about the long-term trend, but there is hope that things are getting better.

Cool graphs. I like the current activity and am avoiding getting sucked into a chat hole as much as possible so as to contribute to the upward trend.

This. We will probably never see the kind of activity had when this place opened, but even if we can just keep up the volume of the past few days I will be happy.

I agree. Even when the SDMB finally croaks, we probably won't get more than a handful of refugees. If we grow from here, it will be because of new people, and because we find our own niche/voice. It will happen organically (if it happens at all), not out of any conscious decision to say "Hey, we're Mellophant, and now we're going to be all about ________." We'll just realize one day that we talk mostly about cooking. Or old movies. Or bow hunting.

As long as I'm in four or five interesting conversations at any one time, that works for me, and that's pretty much what the board traffic is at right now.

I love getting folks here who AREN'T from the SDMB! If anyone has a friend or family member who might enjoy being Mello, invite them to join!

I agree with Myrna and OneCentStamp. Right now, this is pretty good, comfortable traffic for me. If all of the conversations were hit-or-miss I might be hurting for a few more threads, but as it is now I've been consistently able to find threads I wanted to post in just about every time I've looked at new posts.

If we can keep this, with the interesting content we've been generating these past few days, I'll be quite happy.

I'm sending an invitation to my brother today, in fact. He's sixteen and doesn't have a lot of message board experience, so everybody had better be nice to him!

IIRC, we picked up quite a bit in the afternoon on both of those days. I know yesterday I was gone all morning and was dismayed at how few new posts there were when I got on, and then we caught up.

It appears we've got people who don't post while at work. Tsk.

I could see some of my customers not having a problem. But I remember a thread from the Dope where a worker asked to use the restroom. OMG. In my neighborhood I get a lot of people who would freak right the fuck out.

    Ha! I remember that thread.

You could try posting from a phone, though! But I imagine they'd tend to be very short, misspelled posts as you were trying to do your job one-handed.

I think we had like 700 posts yesterday? Granted they weren't all Pulitzer Prize winners, but that's the busiest day we have had in months.

Exactly 700 yesterday and New Posts Today are 151 so far.

Fridays are often slow, so we'll see what happens.

What does "user activity" mean here? I know we had 81 online on Wednesday but the figure here says 130. What's it referring to?

I asked that, too, and no one answered! I THINK it means total number of different users who were on at any time during the day, but I'm not sure.

"user activity": I am not sure but believe you are correct Sarah. Sorry, I missed the question.

No problem, Jim. Somehow if that's the case, though, the numbers don't look right. How could we have had a day where only 3 people were here all day? Even for dumbo I don't think that's possible!

The data and stats are not going to be that accurate before we went live on vB but you are correct on what the stat is for.

Awesome! I doubt we'll be getting anything like September 10th again until we get close to another milestone posting number, but I'd be pretty happy sticking in the 400-500 posts a day range.

I'm greedy, I'm hoping we slowly build up to where 700 seems average and we spike to a 1000 on special days.

With vbDrupal set up now, it might be a good idea to keep track of how many visitors the front page gets. It could be helpful to see when we get a jump in traffic on the zine and which articles are getting read the most. I know the board keeps track of which articles are read through the forum, but if someone only hits the front page and doesn't go further it'd be nice to know, too.

At the very least, pepper and I would like to know.

Do you currently use the Statistics module? It's part of the standard drupal distribution but IIRC it's not activated by default.
That would be a good start. The major disadvantage is that it covers only a limited (but configurable) time span.

If you want fancier long term statistics there are third-party modules that might interest you. For example there is a nice one for integration with Google Analytics.

How are you coming along with drupal?

I am sorry to say I have no clue how to do that. I will look into it, but that has to be on the network/server side and not vB of course.

No, it's not activated by default. I've got it set up now, though. I'm thinking Google Analytics would be good to add onto this, because it's great for charting long-term trends and I don't much care for the statistics module that comes with Drupal.

I think I've got the general hang of it at this point. There's a bit of a learning curve to it at first, but it's also relatively straight-forward once you get into it. There's more that I could do at this point than I have done, but I'm trying not to step on pep's toes.

Check out the "Statistics" section in cPanel. You might also want to consider adding Google Analytics.

I've got a bunch of stuff going on today, but I'm going to be posting statistics for the board as soon as I have time. There'll be graphs and everything.

I won't reveal which one was me in Zuul's graph, but I will say it's a nightly activity.

I played with the numbers a little bit. I hope this helps:
