We are now going to be MELLOPHANT.COM, we might go live as pachydome.com though.

Actually, I'm serious about that. If the front page is going to continue to be an important part of the community after we hit the reset button, then I've got to have a name that really captures your attention. One that could have a theme/banner easily designed for it. And one that might intrigue people when I put out calls for submissions. Domebo doesn't have that ring to it. I also like it because I would like to keep things very "general interest" on the front page, and Eclectic is a pretty good description of what I had in mind.

I don't care much what we call ourselves. I mean, I put up with the board being called Domebo, but if I get a vote I would say that ecclectic elephants smacks of trying to hard. I like something simple like The Dome personally, particularly since I would rather not see the upcoming changes as a complete reset, but rather the next chapter in the board's life.

All that said, I will be very sad if the front page doesn't continue to be an important part of the community in the next phase of things. I really like what is being done with it right now, and see it as something that can only get better with time.

I think the idea is to name the ezine eclectic elephant, and then name the board elephant boards or e-boards or something like that. Pep is right, the ezine could use a cool name. I kind of like electric elephant myself.

Oh, NAF1138, I plan to continue the front page, no matter where we go from here. I'm just saying that I'm trying to think in terms of how it will be positioned in relation to the message board. That's why I see a problem with calling it The Dome--for the message board itself, no problem. For a webzine or a blog, it just seems too vague and general.

I think we can absolutely use an elephant as our symbol (in fact, I hereby Ely to make our banner) and still unofficially call ourselves Dumbos.

Like NAF, I think Electric / Eclectic Elephant is a bit much, but too be honest I never really cared that much about the name, so whatever everyone decides is cool with me.

*shrugs* I don't give a rat's ass what you call the place. But I do care about what I see as a lot of navel gazing and . . . . how to put this delicately? . . . immature behavior? . . . . I liked the Dope when I joined because I found a community of bright, articulate, interesting adults. I'm sort of an adult, being 65 years old; fond of philosophizing and a certain amount of goofing around. So when "the best" Dopers came here, I followed.

As I have said before, on another beloved site, I regard this place as a pub. I come here to hoist a pint or two, listen, talk, enjoy the ambiance. Anything interferes with that, why would I bother? I like the atmosphere here, it's looser than the other places I visit. There are a lot of terrific people here. Smart, sarcastic, quickwitted, bright, interesting. Just the sort of people I like.

I belong to another message board that's supposedly a democracy. No fixed moderators, everyone takes a turn. It works, up to a point. The point was when one guy, who had been banned from 4 or 5 other sites, needed to be banned from ours. Despite our "no banning" philosophy, we had to ban him. It took weeks, and the jerk just wallowed in the wonderfulness of being the centre of attention. Over and over again.

Sorry to be meandering around here, but what I'm aiming to say, as far as I can figure out what I'm aiming to do, is, don't sweat the small stuff. If a name change is really needed, then change it. But someone has to be the tour guide on this bus.

I know some of you said you don't like "The Dome", but you should keep it in that general area. After all, you are already Domers, right? And, your goal is to Domeinate the World, right? :wink:

You also want to consider the fact that, if you change the name too radically, you are going to have to explain Domer and Dumbo and all that to every newbie that wanders in the place. Even if you have a FAQ explaining it.
