My thoughts, not that any one really cares.
Move chat to a sub forum of the Thunderdome.
Allow images but not NSFW.
Allow insults, bickering, whining and cursing. But if a fight starts to dominate chat move it to a T'dome thread. So as not to ruin everybody eles' fun. Please move a fight if anyone asks not just a mod.
No spam or illegal links.
Violators get a day in Room 101. Even if it's a couple of days later.

We started with nothing and we still have most of it left.
Chat can't really be a subforum. It is simple to just leave it as it's own page. If we want to move it off the main index.Originally posted by Glazer
You could easily put a link to the chat page in the header, right?Originally posted by Benedict Jim
Pretty easily. That would be the plan. Several links in addition to the one already there.Originally posted by Jeff
So if we're doing this what are the chances of getting a more proper, IRC type chat program installed?
I don't think anyone anywhere has ever said that this is even a remotely good chat program that we're using now.
A link like this one that's already at the top of every page anyway?
Good question. That might be a better solution. Chat code sucks. The only problem is that this chat integrates to our user tables and we never found another that did well.Originally posted by Jeff
When are people logging on and seeing pics of penises and people peeing on each other? Seriously? I haven't seen any pics even CLOSE to anything like that since porngate unless they are a link and labeled NSFW. Looking back thru a few of the chat logs I don't see anything either so I'm like to understand when this is happening.
The pee thing was simply a joke. My comment about getting rid of images in chat was simply an idle comment, not meant to spark off any sort of crusade or be taken as a declaration of moderator intent.Originally posted by Sleeps w/Butterflies

Winston, I know your impulse control is not always the best (nor is mine) but this thread and especially your OP was an incredibly poor decision. Things have been nuts here lately (and yes I have contributed to that) but what we need is a break from it, not some well-poisoning rhetoric about how a feature that pretty much all of the super regulars use* is "a piece of crap" and "ruining / killing this site". You get that when you say that, you're not talking about a bunch of code, right? You're talking about the people who post in chat. Sure, I'll take some flack and some is derserved - but what about binks and terrifel and pepper and Fiveroptic and Angua and Ely and everybody else? Chat is more than just drama and bullshit, so save your accusations, please.Originally posted by Winston Smith
I think the big difference between you and me is I do stupid thing because I get emotionally involved and you do stupid things because they are lulzy. I really think you are in some hapless way trying to help this board but I am telling you - now is not the time for your theatrics. So many of us are on the edge and close to walking - chaos and breakdowns are the last things we need. We only have so many straws left until we reach the final one.
Now - as to moving chat, I don't care anymore. My argument was always that having chat on the front page will help suck people in (and I know it has done just that) but there has been a lot of negative stuff in there lately and it doesn't do this place any good to have that be the first thing people see. So fine, move it - but make the link to that page and inviting as possible so people actually click on it.
*There are fantastic posters who don't chat. I can think of OneCentStamp and Cairo Carol off the top of my head. I do not mean to demean their experiences or contributions here at all.

Is this just another one of your tard jokes, Winston? Chat has actually attracted users to the site over the last few months. God knows nothing else has. Like it or not, it's the closest thing to an asset Dumbo has.Originally posted by Winston Smith
If there's something bad going on, it doesn't even have to be a whole day. Half an hour would give people time to cool off. Using less draconian measures when possible makes it possible to use them boldly when it's necessary.Originally posted by Glazer

Okay, that was pretty funny. Sorry Zuul.
An hour is good for an on the spot cooling off true. But if people post NSFW pics, are harrassing someone and will not stop when asked or fighting and wont take it to the dome. Then a day in the box is a good thing. People tend to get wrapped up in what's going on and don't realize that the people not in on there little drama just go away. If there has been a complaint and the mods go back and check the logs and there was a violation then 101 'em. Even if the drama is long over.Originally posted by Excalibur

Yanno, I wish everyone would just accept this site for what it IS, instead of what it was originally intended to be or what they think it's supposed to be. It has morphed into what it is. It's not at BAD place. The bad thing is the herding of cats that everyone keeps trying to do. STOP HERDING THE CATS! Just let it morph. Let it work itself out.
Too many people are trying to colour between the lines here. There's no need. Let it evolve.
Again...my opinions are not as formed as those of others because I've been on the periphery. But I'm here now. And isn't that the point? Drawing old users back, and calling in new ones?
Let it become whatever it's going to become. The Internet is big enough for a little diversity.
I agree with you so much, Fiver. Was it a bad decision to implement chat? Who knows? We will never know what would have happened if CRSP hadn't done it. But it's here now and it is NOT some separate entity from Domebo. It IS Domebo. I'm not saying it's more important than the actual forums - but it is just as important. Look at the threads in JJ and G - SO many of those threads are offshoots of things that were discussed in chat. And for better or for worse, chat brings us all closer - maybe that's the problem, maybe emotions get high because we are so intimate after having so much close, real-time conversation - but it is what it is. To talk about chat damaging Dumbo is missing the point.
ETA: And before you come in here and disagree with me, McNutty - remember you announced the birth of your daughter in chat. Whether you meant to become so or not, you're on our side, now.

I agree with both of these posts. We damage ourselves by worrying too much about what else we could be or what other boards we should be like. It doesn't matter if other boards don't have chat or don't want chat: we do and it's part of our board culture here, for good or ill.Originally posted by Myrnalene

I say move it to a subforum. Its nice.. I like to jump in here and there and talk for a bit.. But I can do that in the place that's just around the corner and out of sight as opposed to right up front next to the main course. It might stop the stupid chat fights I walk into and shake my head and leave by not having it right up front for all to log in and join just because its right there. Then again, it might make it worse as everyone that's in there are the regulars.. And often those are the ones that are jabbing at each other.
Eh, in any case, move it to a subforum.. It'll make the place look a little cleaner and more professional. Right now you log on and you see a realtime thunderdome fight half the time right on the front page.. We could do without that.
Out of curiosity, why spend time and effort setting up your own chat when IRC works perfectly well? You can link to it from the main board without any fear, and...it's there. Done, finalized and complete. I even think that there are now web-based apps so you don't have to get an IRC client.
And, most importantly, it's free. With a finite amount of money and a finite amount of tech resources, this is a major plus.
Plus it allows private side coversations, has good modding features, etc.
I couple of reasons not to go with IRC -
You can't see the history of the conversation, which I personally think is very important. We had an IRC room before at it was pretty much dead all the time, because you would go in, see that no one was there at the time and just leave.
You can't tie the board's user accounts to the chat room if it is IRC.
We don't want to split chat from the board. This here thing - Domebo, Pachydome, whatever - does not exist as only a message board. There are users who only post. There are users that only chat. Keeping the chat on the board ties those two parts together. I know a few chatters have said they would have no reason to go to the boards if chat is split for good, but these same people post now because it's right there.
We just plain cannot afford to split this community any further. After we move, we are going to have a lot of rebuilding work to do and we need everyone that's here now to have a reason to be there and to be involved with the project.

The problem I see is that you could very well end up in the same boat you're in now.
No matter how well you hide it, if it's on the same domain, all it takes is a couple of Nonnies to shoot WebSense (or whoever else) e-mails saying "Dear WebSense: I am a system administrator and want to let you know that I found several of my employees engaged in workplace inappropriate chat on Dumbo.net (or Pachydrome.com or whatever). Please change the classification." and you're back to where you are now. I'm like 99% sure that WebSense has a manual reporting feature.
