    Default Cover songs!

I absolutely cover songs. I have at least a thousand of them that I enjoy. I like the ones that are just like the original and I like ones that are *nothing* like the original. Of course there are stinkers abounds, but there are so many good ones too!

Let's share some. How about doing just one per post so we can keep up with trying them out? Link to them if you can on YouTube. If you can't find the whole song online, maybe link to a sample on Amazon. If all else fails, just give us the artist and title so we can check it out for ourselves if we can.

    I'll start......

I've never been a fan of Kate Bush which surprises people since I'm such a big fan of Tori Amos. I kind of like her original of "Running Up That Hill" but I really like the Placebo cover. It has a somber and spooky feel to it that I think the original totally misses.

I'm sitting at work far away from my music collection but I can think of 3 covers off the top of my head.

Links go to youtube but I don't get video or sound where I am, so I can't vouch for quality.

    1) . This is a (now-defunct) Canadian rock band from the late 90's covering a Traveling Wilburys song. I love the lyrics.

Tweeter and the Monkeyman were hard up for cash
They stayed up all night selling cocaine and hash
To an undercover cop who had a sister named Jan
For reasons unexplained she loved the Monkeyman

Tweeter was a boy scout, 'course went to Vietnam
Found out the hard way, nobody gives a damn
Thought that they'd find freedom just across the Jersey line
Hopped into a stolen car, down Highway 99

    2) . Covering Lionel Ritchie shouldn't be this fun, oh no. I love singing along to this song in the car (badly).

    3) . A cover of an old Son House song from the 30's, who I never would've even known existed if it wasn't for The White Stripes.

I love cover songs, too! A few favorites:

This song has been covered approximately 8 billion times and it's always good, but I love the Social Distortion version of best of all.

Another great one is Alien Ant Farm's version of .

Pet Shop Boys have done a bunch of great covers...my favs are

    The Clash's version of .

I could go on and on!

Jim, I was going to mention the Bangles' Hazy Shade of Winter. Who would think that the Bangles could outdo Paul Simon on his own song?!

Another good one is Red Hot Chili Peppers doing . An example of taking a great song and pushing it up to the next level.

Ohhh RHCP "Higher Ground" is a really good one! Also, I luuuuuuurve that Faith No More Cover. Babs does the best version of "Somewhere" in my opinion, tis true!

Tori Amos covers a TON of people in concert, but my favorite is her cover of Joni Mitchell's " ." Ignore the video as it is mostly crappy drawings of Tori.

Johnny Cash's version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" makes me cry. So does the original, but this one is so sweet. Fiona Apple sings backup. Couldn't get it on YouTube. You can hear the entire thing on Last.fm here (top right black box) Don't click the video on the left, it isn't the song.

"Best of You" by Foo Fighters is one of my favorite songs. There are a few good versions, Prince did one at a Super Bowl a few years ago. The Sterophonics did on Live Lounge. It's acoustic.

Another one I'm very fond of is Pearl Jam's version of Lucinda Williams' Crazy Mary (not convenient to link to it right now). Eddie's voice is amazingly compelling on that song.

    Grand Funk Railroad's "Wild Thing"
    Limp Bizkit's "Behind Blue Eyes"
    Johnny Cash's "Hurt"
And as much as I hate to admit it, Mariah Carey's "Against All Odds" is pretty good.

The Aimee Mann "One" is also fairly good.
One of the best covers I have heard is also One, but a different One altogether.
Cowboy Junkies . Heartbreaking and like most of the Junkies output absolutely superb and a huge improvement on the original.

I prefer Brian Ferry's "Jealous Guy" to John Lennon's original.

That reminded me of Wide Mouth Mason's cover of "Superstition." I am a total sucker for funky beats, and this little three-piece band from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan take a good run at ol' Stevie himself. (Canadians, if you get a chance to see these guys live, take it! They are fantastic!)

Whether they are better than the original is open to discussion but they are certainly very entertaining.

Rufus Wainwright covers Lennon/McCartney's . Fiona Apple also did a cover of this, but it really isn't as good. Again, I can't see/hear video right now so apologies if the quality is poor.

ETA that I see What Jim linked to Fiona upthread.

I've always really preferred Cyndi Lauper's version of When You Were Mine (last.fm link) to Prince's original.

Queensryche " on Their Minds", best Andrew Lloyd Webber Cover ever IMHO.

Echo and the Bunnymen " are Strange", better than the Doors. The sound is a bit dodgy on this clip. The best version is on the Lost Boys Soundtrack.

Queensryche " Get Close to You".

Bruce Dickinson "All the Young Dudes"

Got to second Alien Ant Farm as well and Hendrix of course.

My favorite Baez song, and clearly the best self-penned song in a career full of interpretations of other writers' material.

Don't shut it down without giving it a listen, just because it's Priest. It's actually a very reverent cover that manages to be delicate and vulnerable like the original, while obviously cranking up the decibels by 100 or so.

Love Joan Baez and have ever since I first heard her in 1960.
Have never seen her live and opted not to last year in case she failed to come up to my expectations based on years of recorded music.
Saw film of the tour and she was every bit as good as her recordings.
Just received the brochure for my local venue, The Sage, and find that she is appearing there again this year but the show is already sold out.

My gosh, did we actually get to 45 posts with no mention of "Hallelujah"? Leonard Cohen wrote it and originally performed it, but what others have done with it is amazing.

I think Jeff Buckley's version remains my favorite.

I was just coming to that but got distracted.

    Again, Elisa:

    The slight accent is charming.

And an unfortunately curtailed version, made for "The OC" (which I have never seen)
I think that this is my favourit, the broken voice captures the poignancy of the song perfectly.
