McNutty's Report on Featherlou's Picture Post

He says we should be discouraging this type of post, I don't actually see why. It was a silly hijack, but the boards should be more fun. I don't have a problem with it. Anyone else?


(No, I do not plan on starting one of these for every reported post, just the next couple so I know that we are all thinking the same way.)

I don't like them, but I see not rule against it nor a reason to have a rule. I did tell featherlou this in another thread as a poster and long before McNutty's thread:

Did you PM McNutty about the Report? If so please close the report to once you post it here I think. Just don't PM the mod group anymore is what I think we agreed to. It that what we agreed to?

I didn't yet. I needed to figure out how to phrase the PM so I didn't sound like my normal asshole self, and figured while I was thinking about it I would see what you all thought. I will copy the PM into this thread when I do, since I think I know what I am going to say now.

I don't see a problem with her post. It's not like we were having a SERIOUS DISCUSSION in that thread. And if anybody takes the "your argument is invalid" macro seriously, they need to get off the Interwebz.

I agree Pep, though I did ask her in chat (not as a mod, just a friend) to see if she could at least make it smaller. I figured if I am getting tired of seeing it, she is probably already pissing off posters. McNutty was annoyed enough to report the post.

Here is what I wrote to McNutty. Hopefully it conveys that while we understand that he is serious, and we take his concerns seriously, we don't plan to do anything about this particular post.

While I agree that those sorts of posts should be discouraged, I think I would like to encourage self policing of that sort of thing by the membership. What Exit already unofficially said something to her about that post in the thread that was a bit of a gentle nudge in the right direction. I don't think she is being intentionally jerkish and beyond that I don't see any rules violations in the post, so we are going to let it stand. But I'll keep an eye out to see if this sort of thing becomes problematic in the future.

Just a bit more of me and McNutty:

I will point out that the argument from the pro-pictures-everywhere crowd about this sort of thing happening was something along the lines of "what's the big deal? if that happens, it'll be considered being a jerk and people will be told to cut it out."

ETA: and somehow that exact same picture was too much for a thunderdome thread, so Jim broke it, but here it's fine? I don't really get it.

I think the difference is the context of the picture within the thread this time as opposed to last time. My reading of that post was that it was not intended seriously and that the thread was already no longer being taken all that seriously by the majority of the posters. I don't think it was any more inappropriate than many of the other posts already made.

It was broken in your T'Dome thread because you had specifically asked that that thread be taken seriously, and since we were not going to move the thread it seemed like a good compromise to remove the silliness. But to me all this looks to be is just silliness and a poster not knowing when a joke isn't funny. So while yes, in this instance it was a bit jerkish, I don't think it was intentionally so and I would rather not step in to moderate in this particular instance. Unless I am missing your point.

100% correct. If you want to include me on any further PM, I don't mind being involved.

Normally I would not have broken feather's IMG in the Dome thread, but that was a reasonably special case.
