Default Something odd about our search function?

I wanted to get a feel for what, if anything, domers are saying about Giraffe, so I tried to do a search and got this message:

The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: giraffe.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards.
It lets me search on "train" and "elephant," so why not "giraffe"?

That is odd and I got the same message. It must have been entered as a word to skip over in search.

Actually Sarah just let me know that we have the same problem with:

The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: avatar.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards.
There may be a server side issue.

Common word threshold: Words which are contained in a greater percentage of all posts will be regarded as common. Common words are ignored in search queries. Set to zero to disable. Only takes effect if there are more than 100 posts. If you want words that are currently regarded as common to be reconsidered you have to recreate the index.

    Set to 5%

I searched the word "avatar" earlier today, and got the same message. Weird.

    Do a Google site-specific search:

I have deleted the existing Search Index and I am rebuilding it.

I started at 11:00 AM EST and will come back and record when it is complete.

The search backend is currently indexing all posts on the board. This can take from a few minutes to a few hours depending on your board’s size.

I switch Domebo over to the MySql search and set off the rebuild and it is working again already even while rebuilding.

Giraffe, Avatar even Exit not get results!

So what happened between June 6 and June 16? Does it take 10 days on your server to rebuild the index for this board?

The native search engine apparently sucks (to use a tech term), there is an option for a MySQL search and that is what I tried last night and it works very well, though it is very slow unless you take the board down.

The 10 day delay was a matter of free help (me) being unreliable as they get busy with other issues and poor coordination between CRSP and myself.

I hope you find the answer satisfactory. No excuses, just reality.

I know you guys are unpaid and thanks for all the hard work you do.

My question was this, really: On June 6 you said "I have deleted the existing Search index and I am rebuilding it. I started at 11:00 AM EST..." What happened to that index rebuild? Did it take a long time? Did it fail? Did it work but not improve searching?

Now I get the question, it failed after taking a long time as did the second rebuild CRSP tried.

The MySQL rebuild I did last night also takes a long time but the search engine was working well within an hour. So this appears to be the solution. The original search broke on its own.

OK. Thanks. Does phpBB use a MySQL database engine then? What are these two types of search you're referring to?

There is some php code based search engine and a second MySQL one to build the search over the SQL database. The phpBB php search engine appears to be broke and CRSP found some information on the support board that it is buggy. Last night was my first chance to play tech for almost a week and I decided to try the MySQL option. I was rather happy when it worked.

I honestly do not know much about either.
