Sabert will stay behind his Leader and assist him in executing the Goblins. He can at least assure them a small prayer for their journey and a quick Death as needed while his Leader interrogates them.

Macsalin thanks Sabert for his help in the swift executions.

He is a bit stumped what to offer the Goblin, since there's no obvious way to return a co-operative prisoner to civilisation for a mining or road-building job.
    So he settles for:
"If you don't talk, you die."

And will promptly carry out his threat if necessary.

(if the Goblin does talk, Macsalin will ask the party for help.)

Dugar tells the goblin "If yas dont talk i be cuttin off your hands and feet and leaving ya here"

Not that Dugar is going to do so but hopefully the threat of him doing so will be enough to scare the bugger.

Giles, after carefully picking over any evidence that might be found outside, finds nothing that is really all that useful to the party. No good tracks or anything. Frustrated that such a large group of goblins could not only sneek up on the party, but do so without leaving any reliable indication of where they came from he trudges back into the cave to find the party interrogating the goblin.

"Hrm. The goblin won't talk, and threatening to cut off his hands won't help much. A solid pounding againt the cave wall might losen his tounge but I doubt it. We need to find out how they knew we were here and why they attacked us. If they are part of this other group that we are going to fight or not, and if not if they know where that group is. But good luck to you finding any of that out."

Giles goes to start breaking his camp gear. After the events so far, he isn't getting back to sleep tonight.

    The third goblin talks.

We tracks you of course, but we did not notice all of you. The Bears and Dwarves left obvious tracks, you tricked us.
The other goblins are dead or fled.
Over a thousand but the Dwarves and men and curs-sed Elves killed almost all of us.
We use to work with wargs, but they are gone, slunk away the cowards.

You killed out leader. We were hoping for some bear fat, beats are extra fat his time of year and can feed us for a long time.

Macsalin explains to Dugar that it's still torture.

He waits for the Goblin to answer Dugar's questions (and any followup ones), confirms that the Goblin doesn't know of any other groups and that there's no organisation, then kills him and puts the body out of sight.
Then repeat on the next Goblin...

    Sabert shakes his head....

This is not a good position to be in he thinks to himself, and one where even he can see keeping his mouth shut would be a blessing more than a curse. He just awaits orders from his Leader, Macsalin, hoping he is a righteous being who knows what to do. In the meantime, he'll pray over the living Goblin a bit of a lengthier prayer.

Macsalin quietly talks to the party (especially Sabert) out of earshot of the Goblin:

"There's no way to get this Goblin back to a supervised job; the party don't want him to live (and no doubt they don't want to spend time escorting him back); I said 'if he didn't talk, he'd die' - which left it open what would happen if he talked.
So although I'm not keen on it, I will kill him anyway, unless the party agree otherwise.
And repeat the same 'deal' on every Goblin."

Talking to Macsalin out of earshot to Sabert. "You may want someone else besides you to do the killing here. Its ok if they think that some of the band are blood thirsty but it wont do us any good if they think the leader is". You can pretend to lecture me later for killing them. I don't mind looking like the bad guy in this case".

Macsalin appreciates Dugar's offer - but since all the Goblins are going to die right now (even the co-operative ones), it doesn't matter who kills them.

Sabert listens to what is being said, and nods.
"This one sees our position, and though he may not enjoy the lying aspect of this at ALL, he understands the execution. You may take responsibility, but it is by Sabert's hands that they can at least be assured a quick and less painful death. Sabert does not enjoy the lying, but when you pose it simply as "talk or die" that... he can understand better than the promise or allure of a false reward- it is not quite trickery, it is merely a threat with an open statement. That he will not go against, for these are trying times that test men's souls. Yet, there is no need to damn your own, when there is one willing to take the burden of execution into his own hands. Take responsibility for your actions, but allow one impartial to them to give them a swift end.
Just... do not lie to them with false pretenses, but if you can promise a swift death, then that is the best they can hope for. They are damned either way, but there is no need to be exceedingly cruel or promise false hopes to them."

Macsalin appreciates the support from the party:
"I wish we could send a co-operative opponent back, either by supporting troops or even Eagles. But it is not to be.
Still I refuse to be cruel, or to lie. (If they do not realise what I am offering, then at least they are not unduly alarmed.)
So a swift painless death is their lot in life (whether they talk or not)."

Outside Giles had found simple tracks of goblins cautiously approaching the cave from the east. Nothing was left nearby and no guards.

Giles has packed up his camp, and the packing has helped ebb his anger. He looks over at the goblin that did talk and feels guilty that it's going to get killed anyway. The party seems to feel that it's wrong too...maybe there is nothing to be done. You can't have a lose goblin about mucking things up, too dangerous. Far too dangerous. Not when the released captive could give away the element of surprise. No.

Giles scratches his cheek and walks over to the goblin crouches down and looks it square in the eyes.

"Do you know anything about the goblin's that are raiding near Goblin's Gate?"

Even at bear-killers my wrath ebbs very quickly when it comes to killing in cold blood. I am willing, if the party prefer, that we choose by lot one goblin to be charmed and released, sent south with instructions to steer clear of both its own kind and ours, and to head Eastwards skirting the Mountains of Ash once it gets so far.

Default A plea to the party

Macsalin is grateful to Mellowbeorn for his offer to use Charm to get one co-operative Goblin to leave the area.
This would allow Macsalin not to trick that Goblin verbally and also show that co-operation is rewarded.

Macsalin suggests that the current Goblin is the lucky one (and will be released once Charmed) and that the rest be killed in their Sleep.
Please let Macsalin know if you object to this (but be aware that this decision is very difficult in particular for Macsalin and Sabert).

N.B. Apparently we've been told who their tracker is, but Macsalin doesn't want to wake him up and ask him anything - in case he co-operates and also has to be released.
    Does that make sense?!

It is possible that this particular group lost touch with Groonuk (the 'talented' one), and that they are not responsible for the guerilla activity.

Mellowbeorn's Charm would no doubt enable us to confirm if the Goblin is telling the truth (especially as he's facing starvation).

Here. I know you will not be much of a one for berry-eating, but one who goes on the war-trail must eat what comes his way, agreed? And you'll find it a better belly-filler than you expect. Now. You're in a bad way, as you must know, but I have a plan which I will go over in a minute, and if you go along with it, you will certainly live. First, let us talk about what you have been telling us. I don't mind if it was a bit of a story, but I do need the truth now.

Macsalin is grateful to the party for making the best of a tricky moral situation.
He thanks Mellowbeorn and asks the party to slay the sleeping goblins swiftly.
The co-operative Goblin has been given a chance of freedom and the other Evil attackers have been spared suffering.
Given our situation in hostile territory, there was no better alternative.

The Goblin told us that some Goblins can track (and that Bears and Dwarves leave the clearest tracks). Apparently many Goblins are dead and at least some Wargs have fled.
So it's not clear who the Guerillas are, although a leader named 'Groonuk' has been mentioned (= archer+tracker+some magic).
The attacking party came from the East.

Macsalin suggests that we dispose of the bodies, reset watches and finish the night's rest here.
Presumably the cave is still our best bet for tonight, but if anyone prefers to move elsewhere, please speak up!

The goblin pickings are pretty slim. Spears and crossbows and crap armor. Between them is only 11 silver and 95 coppers. No magic was found.

The goblins are disposed of except for the charmed one led off.

The rest of the night passed peacefully.

Any changes in plans or tracking?

Let us take a look again at this Goblin encampment and see what we can find.

    Shall we be off then?

It's clear enough what the party want. We return to the goblin campsite and give our trackers room to work.

We use our standard outside marching order (Giles Maggot, a gap, Rüdan, Dugar, Sabert, Mellowbeorn, Little Bear, Lyall, Lanellen, Macsalin, Theogrim, Barazinbar) to get there - with Croak providing aerial surveillance.

Sorry, I should say that I got that from Colin Hoult...

The party marches out following the Hobbit tracker. Giles leads them slowly but surely for 2 hours. "These are not the stealthy goblins we were warned about." He remarks at one point. They find a crude cave and he finds indication that at least two goblins have entered the cave after you dealt with those that invaded yours.

Entered...and left again by the main entrance, correct? Could we track them? Would it be worth our while to do so?

The goblins entered this cave the other group came out of. It does not appear they left again, at least by this entrance.

@ all: "So either there are goblins still in this cave, or there's another exit somewhere within. Shall we enter, Macsalin?"
