Default German president reelected as expected

Many people outside Germany don't even know that Germany has a President. He is our largely ceremonial head of state while our head of government, the Chancellor, is much more visible.

At any rate, today the incumbent Horst Köhler has been reelected for another five years. Because the President isn't elected directly but by a special assembly this wasn't a big surprise, but of course that doesn't keep commentators from speculating on broader political implications.

Oh, and while we are at it, this incarnation of my country and its constitution turned 60 today.

Yeah, I was watching DW TV news last night and they were covering both the election and the 60 years!

Congratulations for the 60 years, hope you have a party to go to

Thank you! Actually, no I don't.

Part of the heritage of this republic is that things like this are relatively low-key events. Posting about it is about as much flag waving as I can do without feeling awkward.
