"I think you're in good hands," Graham says. "I'll be right back."

Graham smiles slightly and proceeds to get Tina a few more pancakes. , keeping his eyes open for someone bringing a tricorder to the mess hall.

Tina tucks into her second plate of pancakes with only slightly less rapacity.

Ens. Haakon Kjaerstad walks into Mess Hall 3, sees Graham and comes over. "Here's a tricorder, sir," the young Norwegian officer says. "I've crosslinked it to the Novy Rostov evacuees' headshots and DNA databases."

Rawlings asks Thalen to speak to Onn, and says in his deep bass, "My apologies, ma'am, but I'm actually working on a time-sensitive special project for Cmdr. Vargas right now. I'll go over to the other ship if you really want, of course, but if I may respectfully suggest it, perhaps another Security officer would be better just now...?"

I had understood Graham earlier saying "No tricorder" to be declining the offer of one, but now see that I was mistaken. Sorry about that.

Still wearing the smile that began with the recitation of the ship names, Nia doesn't quite catch up to what Rawlings is telling her. When she does, her lower lip pushes out as thoughts run through her mind.

"No, of course, Rawlings. I don't want to steal you away from Cmdr. Vargas. I'll get someone else. Good luck with your project, Double-T."

The last three sentences are purely rote, using the standard responses of any experienced officer. Truth is, her earlier, admittedly unworthy desire to get "a bit of her own back" (as Ajay would say) returns even stronger than before. Fate has given her two chances to be petty. No sense in defying fate, right?

"Mr. Thalen. Get Lt. Graham back, please." Even as Nia says the words, she pulls out her communicator and taps out another message to Rangin. She won't send it yet, though; after all, Booker could refuse to play his part in her little revenge play.

"Aye, ma'am," Thalen says, turning back to the comm board.

    Graham's communicator beeps twice.

Graham thanks Kjaerstad and stands behind the apparently well-occupied Tina to take a scan, pausing when his communicator beeps.

He sighs and opens his communicator. "Graham here," he responds.

Nia can't help arching an eyebrow. "Lt. Onn, here," she retorts. "Sorry to interrupt your parent hunt, but as Ensign Rawlings is on a project elsewhere, I'd like to assign you to the boarding party to this unknown ship for a once-over. It might seem overkill, but I'm not keen on sending forty refugees to a ship and crew we've never heard of before."

She tries to pique his interest with some intrigue. "To be honest, when they first hailed us, they were so enthusiastic and touchy about having our crew inspect communicate with theirs, I had the uneasy feeling something was hinky. Who knew what kind of opportunists they were? They might've been slavers," she says with appropriate gravity. Although the possibility had taken up about two seconds of contemplation and dissipated almost at once.

"Anyway. Like I said earlier, we want a couple of officers to check out the ship to make sure everything is as it seems--and most of all, to make sure their accommodations are acceptable and that their l/s systems can handle 40 extra passengers. One of our Science officers TBD will handle that, they'll be organizing things. You'd be both an escort and, well, reconnaissance.

"I'll have St. Croix send you the brief background research she's done on them." Nia nods to St. Croix with a little sweeping gesture of her hand, mutely asking her to send the data to her superior. "You'll see the ship's got a good reputation, as has its captain."

She hesitates, her voice lowering a fraction. "But in our many combined years, we both know circumstances and allegiances can change pretty fast, don't we?" Then, more brisky: "Well, that's about all. You up for it, Mr. Graham?"

St. Croix sends the information to Graham, as ordered.

He also sees there are hits for Tina in both the NR evacuee portrait and the DNA databases.

"You're the boss, ma'am" Graham replies, spontaneously picturing Nia in the big chair on the Bridge with some...affection, of multiple sorts.

After a second he hopes that his casual comment doesn't come across wrong. And then: circumstances and allegiances can change pretty fast.

    Is that?...nah, let it go.

"Ah..." he clears this throat. "I believe I've got some solid back up here to handle next steps."

Yeah. The boss. Nia draws a breath and silently exhales. 'Ma'am.' She misses the way he says her name. Said her name.

Her casual tone reflects none of this: "...You mean the next steps for finding whoever that child belongs to? Of course, I'm sure she'll be well taken care of. And our forty refugees will too, thanks to this clipper." She pauses; if Booker were here he'd see a flicker of embarrassment cross her face. "And... thanks to you, Lieutenant. Good luck. Onn out."

Now Nia pays rapt attention to tapping out a message she could write blindfolded. As long as she avoids ruminating on being so resentful and envious. What happened to her ability to take things lightly, to shrug and move on after saying goodbye?
RANGIN, LT.JG: Heads up. Your security escort will be Lt. Graham. My apologies, I know of your past with him, but my first choice was otherwise occupied. He is aware that the science officer is effectively in charge of this mission. Remember that.
Her thumb hovers over the SEND button, then switches position to type:
Perhaps this offers you a chance to show off a new uniform, if you've got one--or simply your rank, if not. -- ONN, LT.:
Now she sends the message off, closing her eyes in a tiny prayer that the Ain't She a Butte will turn out to be a fantastic fit for the refugees, that Booker won't stun Rangin on sight, that Rangin won't think she's doing this to bother him. And that she won't regret this minor 'prank.'

    Except she already does.

Graham quickly scans the information about his new assignment.

Then he addresses Dodson and Three Crows. "Duty calls...can I ask one or both of you to take charge of re-uniting Tina with her mommy? Positive tricorder readings here." He holds up the tricorder to illustrate the point.

Graham smiles with sincere gratitude--and a mental note of respect that Three Crows has been consistently on the ball. "Here you go," as he hands her the tricorder.

He hunkers down so he's face to face with Tina. "These are my friends Three Crows, and Dobson. I have to go now, but they are going to get you back to your mommy," he says slowly and softly but confidently. "I want to remember, if you're ever lost again, or scared, or anything like that--to say to anyone in a uniform like ours, 'I want to talk to my friend Lt. Booker Graham,' is that a deal?"

Tina nods solemnly and says, "OK. I can do that." And then she suddenly throws her arms around Graham's neck. "And thanks for the pancakes."

Graham's surprised, a more than a little moved. He swallows and clears his throat, giving Tina a brief little hug. "Oh, you're welcome, of course."

When he can - gently - spring himself, he tries to regain some professional decorum in front of his Security colleagues, which is a tough row to hoe because he's blushing fiercely.

Well, this is an example of the good part of the job in Security, he reminds himself, embarrassment aside.

Three Crows gives him a brilliant smile and winks. Dodson seems amused by the whole situation. "C'mon back here, honey," Three Crows says to Tina, patting the seat next to her and then looking at the tricorder. "Let's see what we can find out about where you should be going now...."

Rangin checks out the incoming text and sees the orders, no wait, something puzzles him as he reads it again. It is not reading as an order, more a request from Lt. Onn, the current acting Captain to head for Transporter Room 1.

This makes no sense, he was expecting a set of orders, not some velvet glove routine. It makes him just as nervous with her second part about his promotion. He was expecting some snide comment, a put-down maybe, or a don’t-get-ahead-of-yourself message to show who is the boss. But it is polite, friendly even. There is more going on here than he wants to consider, but resolves not to let his guard down that much. Just in case.

On the other hand, he has worked with Ens. Rawlings before and they get on well enough. Indeed having someone of that size behind Rangin, would alleviate a whole set of problems before they could arise.

He is halfway to the transporter room when he gets the next text. Ah well, too good to be true that it could all go smoothly. But the tone of the message is different, in fact Lt Onn was looking to send someone else first before Graham. Stopping dead in the corridor is never a clever idea and realising he is both a blockage and being jostled, he moves onwards again. And then his brain processes the fact 'the science officer' is in charge. Lt Onn, put himself, Rangin, as leading this group over Lt Graham.

He is not sure what is going on in that reptilian brain of hers, but after these texts, Rangin wonders if he shouldn’t try to ask a few pertinent questions of Lt Onn.

Graham makes his way to Transporter Room 1.

Chief Nguyen, standing at the console and running a diagnostic, looks up and nods to him. "Mr. Graham," he says. "Ready when you are. There was going to be a second person beaming over, though, I understand...?"

Rangin steps into Transporter Room One, still slightly curious about what Lt Onn is up to. But there is still a job to be done and he is not going to let anyone down if he can help it. Looking around he sees Chief Nguyen and Lt Graham already there and waiting. Obviously he must have been a little closer to here than Rangin when Graham received his call. Graham is looking quite relaxed at the moment, although that will no doubt vanish when he finds out why Rangin is here and then he will generally be his usual unpleasant self.

Rangin turns to Chief Nguyen to begin with. “Sir, I’m here with orders to beam across and take a look at our new ship for the colonists.” before looking across at Graham with an innocent smile. “I believe there is someone from Security as well, Mr Graham?” he adds nonchalantly as if he didn’t know already that it was going to be Graham.

Graham blinks, trying to parse his surprise at Rangin's entrance and the man's snarky question at the same time.

Has he forgotten what department I'm in?

He takes a deep breath before answering. "Much as I might enjoy remaining here to chat with Chief Nguyen," he replies evenly, "that would be me."

Graham has to resist rubbing his forehead. He gestures toward the transporter pad.

"Any....guidance...on how to support this away mission, and your, ah, scientific assessment before we beam over?" he asks Rangin, keeping his tone calm, although dry.

However this came about, it's likely a milk run.

A milk run with an asshole, but still a milk run.

Don't make things harder for Nia, yourself, or....your family.

Rangin nods politely with a beatific smile back towards Graham. “Thank you Mr Graham. I wasn’t sure if it was going to change again.”

Fun though it would be to continue needling Graham, Rangin decides to aver slightly as Chief Nguyen is present and listening, even as he does his level best not to look interested. It doesn't help that Graham is obviously keeping a firm grip on his temper. Maybe later then, Rangin is sure he still owes Graham plenty of payback.

"No guidance for this mission. Go aboard, see what facilities they have and recommend the most appropriate colonists to transfer across. A recommendation from yourself as to if they are capable of dealing with forty rowdy miners or better suited to quieter people would be appreciated. "

If they are going to have to work together, giving Graham something to do will keep him occupied. Rangin does not forget the time on Anubis where Graham was determined to stop him trying to find Kylah.

Graham distracts himself from his ire at Ranging by checking his phase charge and setting as he walks onto the transporter pad.

"Understood," he replies dryly. Over his shoulder, he addresses the transporter officer with genuine warmth. "And thanks. Chief."

Rangin does one last check over of what he is carrying, tricorder, phaser, all the usual away team accoutrements, even if this should be just a quick hop across, a look around and then back in time for tea.

Rangin steps up to join Graham on the transporter pad and turns to face back into the room. There’s a smile on his face as he gets to say something he has wanted to for ages.

“Ready, when you are, Chief. Energize”

Graham's distracted from his assignment to babysit Rangin by a realization: I should introduce Marala and Nikolai to Chief Nguyen.

    I mean...my wife. My...now...my son.

Nikolai could do a lot worse than joining Starfleet and becoming a skilled transporter chief, he muses.

"Energizing," Chief Nguyen says, and Rangin and Graham pass through the whining hum, sparkling lights, temporary disembodiment and slight disorientation of the transporter effect before finding themselves standing in a small but comfortably-furnished shipboard office. A middle-aged woman with a strong chin, a mess of red hair just turning to gray and lots of freckles rises from behind the desk. She is wearing light gray coveralls with a stylized golden octagon pin on the collar.

"Welcome aboard the Ain't She a Butte!" she says in a perceptible brogue, smiling warmly as she sticks out her hand. "I'm Capt. Maeve Danaher."

Rangin steps across ahead of Graham to accept the proffered hand. "Lt Rangin, USS Yorktown, and this is Lt Graham." He shakes her hand firmly and then steps aside to give Graham a little bit of room, while looking casually around the ready room to see what kind of ship it is.

"Thank you for having us on board Captain, and for your offer of accepting some of the colonists from us. We are here to look around and see who would be the best fit to send across."

He flicks one hand across the rating on his uniform, “Please forgive the slight difference, a recent change in rank, I haven’t had opportunity to do something about.” he chirps. Better to explain now and get it out the way, although standing to one side, it also means he gets a good look at Graham’s face when mentions it.

He waits for the response, after all it is her ship, and hoping that Graham can at least behave himself for the duration, now they are finally there.

Capt. Danaher says, "Glad to help. As I told your C.O., we can squeeze 40 aboard. And I assume you got a promotion and not a demotion, so congratulations!"

From what Rangin can see in just this single compartment, the Ain't She is a modern and well-maintained Federation merchantman.

Graham can't decide whether Rangin has been promoted to lieutenant or is just engaged in some sociopathic bullshit.

But, as Vargas emphasized in no uncertain terms, policing Rangin is not my problem.

Graham keeps his expression level, if not bored, perking up only when an opportunity arises to offer Capt. Dahaner "Fàilte" and a nod.*

*As far as I can tell, Fàilte is common between Irish and Scots Gaelic (https://www.google.com/search?q=What...w=1500&bih=857)

Rangin picks up the conversation not wanting it to lapse into either silence or a discussion of intergalactic drinking. “A look around the quarters where you will be berthing the colonists, mess hall, rec room. If you have any preferences about whether you are happier with families or miners, or anything you feel strongly about, better to let us know in advance.”

Rangin turns slightly towards the door waiting for her to take the lead on her ship.

Danaher says, as she heads out the door, "I have no preference as to families or miners - or do you mean 'minors,' o-r-s? Doesn't matter. Whoever you want to send."

The corridor, you see, is narrower than those aboard the Yorktown, just wide enough for two people to pass without bumping shoulders. She leads you to typical passenger quarters, passing several of her crew, wearing similar gray coveralls, along the way. They exchange greetings with the captain and nod to you. The quarters she shows you are also smaller than those aboard the Starfleet heavy cruiser, which is typical of a ship this size, you both know. Everything appears utilitarian but clean and well-maintained.

"Miners, e-r-s. Single workers contracted in." Rangin fills in the details as he makes a couple of notes of what he can see. "We are keeping all the families together, so you don't have to worry about being turned into a creche."

From what he can see, Rangin doesn't have any complaints. The ship, crew, and Captain seem perfectly reasonable and capable of taking more or less anyone from the colony. At this point it would make most sense to move across those looking for a little peace and quiet, maybe not large families and probably not anyone too rowdy where the Yorktown's Security would be better placed to handle them.

"40 people. How many quarters in total? Twenty by two people?" Rangin enquires realising it would affect the groups going into each.

Recalling his interaction with the ruffian-style miners earlier, Graham waits for Rangin to finish (consciously so), and adds, "And - in terms of total capacity - do you have any security staff or might we need to include some of ours in the total number of folks to come on board?"

Danaher says to Rangin, as she leads you to the Ain't She's single mess hall, which is empty at the moment but looks like it can accommodate about fifty, "That's good to know about families, thanks. Yes, at the moment we've got twenty spare quarters, more or less, each of which can take at least two. Some are a little bigger and could take three, or even four, if that includes small children or folks that don't mind being a little cramped. If there are families that are larger than that, which I'd expect, we can split 'em up in adjoining or at least close-by quarters." She says to Graham, "I have three security officers. Depending on how hard-nosed your evacuees are, I guess we could probably use some of your redshirts, but of course that'd mean less room for evacuees."

Rangin nods amiably as he casts his eye around the mess. “We have all types of colonists onboard, and every last one of them looking for a little respite where they can.” Then he looks across at Graham with an amused smile, “but I think we can find enough who aren’t going to cause trouble. Not looking for a change of scenery eh?”

He stops for a moment eyeing up where the food is served before turning back to Captain Danaher. “If you take another forty, are you going to need some more supplies for them?”

"Sure, Mr. Rangin," the Irishwoman says. "Glad you asked. We've got no replicators, so extra supplies for forty mouths would be most welcome."

Graham grudgingly gives Rangin some credit for asking about food supplies. "I have some insight into who might be troublemakers," he replies slowly. "We can make sure none of them are in the group transferred."

"We'd appreciate it," Danaher says. "You're better equipped and have a bigger crew to deal with such folk, after all."

What is up with Graham, Rangin thinks to himself while still trying to keep a cool demeanour, it’s like his mind in a completely different world of its own and nothing is getting a reaction.

Perhaps the fact that his better half is the acting Captain is getting to him, but then that is Graham’s problem and not his and in some ways it amuses him to see Graham so passive as opposed to his usual aggressive stance. Rangin surmises that Lt Onn is wearing the trousers in that little match-up and Rangin tries not to laugh at the thought of Graham in a short skirt. However, this little jaunt has been an amusing diversion and he should probably thank Lt Onn for it, regardless of her reasoning.

“I think that is all, at least from me, Captain,” Rangin says jotting down a couple of minor points in his datapad before closing it. “Mr Graham, any further questions?” Rangin decides to give Graham a professional last chance to say something, just to show how professional he can be and ensure that no complaints are elicited to those further up the chain.

    "No, Mister--"

Graham has to swallow back a little heartburn as he assumes Rangin isn't lying and corrects himself. "Ah, Lieutenant Rangin."

He pauses for a second. "Ideally, we'll be one hundred percent confident no one we send over is going to cause any trouble. If do we have any doubts, I'll consult with Mister--"

    Fuck.

"Lieutenant Rangin on assigning a couple Security officers to back up your people."

"Good!" says Capt. Danaher brightly. "Thank you. Anything else, then, gentlemen?"

Graham manages a small smile. "Vintage Irish whiskey of your choice, on me, when this is all over," he offers with a small gesture approximating a toast.

"You're on, Mr. Graham," she says, smiling.
