    Default Supreme Court Justice Souter is retiring.

    The Story from NPR is here .

    He tends to vote on the liberal side but Obama will probably replace him with someone more liberal is my guess.

    Are any of the conservatives near retirement?

    Fox and the NY Daily News seem to both be assuming the next justice will be black and/or female.

    Yeah, when Sandy left the skirt-to-sausage ratio became unacceptably low. We need a nice young caramel-colored lady so there's something pleasant to rest one's eyes on in group photos.

    Yeah, but no matter who is nominated, one season on that court, and they'll be as wrinkled and ghastly as all the others. Sad, really.

    Better yet, if called by a panther, don't anther.

    A CNN article listed four (? I think) women that were considered top candidates for the job.

    As for their ages (from Wikipedia);

    Stevens is 89
    Ginsberg 76
    Scalia 73
    Kennedy 72
    Breyer 70
    Souter 69
    Thomas 60
    Alito 59
    Roberts 54

    So five are older than Souter and Stevens is the oldest by far, appointed by President Ford before I was old enough to vote (and I'm 46).

    I'd almost predict Stevens to be next, but based on this text in his Wiki entry, it seems that he's trying to hold out for Length of Service;

    "In a 2008 news article, Supreme Court watcher Thomas Goldstein predicted that Justice Stevens will retire during the 2009-2013 presidential term. However, he also predicted that Stevens would not do so until surpassing Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes as the oldest justice in the history of the Court after February 24, 2011.[10] Additionally, Stevens is the ninth-longest-serving justice in the history of the Court, and he will surpass Justice William O. Douglas as the longest-serving if he serves beyond July 15, 2012. [11]"
