Default Fictional books you want to read.

I've always wanted to read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; that thing is bound to have some weird wild stuff in it. Same with Mr. Burn's autobiography Will There Ever Be A Rainbow, the demonic conjurations it probably has are worth the hardcover price, I bet.

    Your turn.

Fictional or fictitious? I think either word works.

Well, Prospero had a book I'd like to peek at, though I couldn't read any of the languages.

Still waiting for the publication of Stephen Colbert's Alpha Squad 7: Lady Nocturne: A Tek Jansen Adventure.

I want to see the real Necronomicon of Abdul Alhazred. Not read it, of course. I'll pay someone else to read it for me.

The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism by Emmanuel Goldstein. The parts that we are exposed to are quite good - I want to know the rest, dammit!

Its a picture of a boot, pressing down on a human face for a thousand years.

I want to read A Dance Around the Planet by Eugene Fitzpatrick. And Higgin's memoirs.

I've always been interested in the full, unabridged S. Morgenstern version of The Princess Bridge.

I want to read about all the packing, dangit!

It doesn't exist? ("It" being an 'unabridged', by S. Morgenstern version of The Princess Bride, because the whole thing is a narrative conceit of William Goldman's ...)

I was going to say "The universal directory for taking alive rats", a book mentioned in one of Patrick O'Brian's books, but a little Googling indicates that that was a real book, published in 1768, as I guess I should have expected of O'Brian.

So, I dunno, maybe something by Kilgore Trout.

Actually, I read that many years ago. I should have stipulated something else from Trout's huge body of work.

I have an autographed hard back copy and have met the author and been in his kitchen. It has a framed picture of a giant mantis eating roast man.

Well, using the most general definition of each word, you could use either word to describe either of those examples. However, as you noted, fictitious has acquired a connotation that makes it better suited to the second instance. (Though in that interpretation, when you tell a cop you live at 221b Baker, it's both fictional and fictitious. Unless you're Gregory House, in which case you're a fictional character giving his real (fictional) address.)

So, the OP title is fine. Carry on.

Although it's a fictional play rather than a fictional book, I'd like to read The King in Yellow. Okay, maybe "like to" isn't the right term. But curiosity might drive me to it.

I do NOT think it should be legal to write a book and title it after a previous author's fictional tale. What's the fun of wondering what the "Tale of the Giant Rat of Sumatra" is, once a hack (or any Non-Sir-Arthurian Author) has written it?
