Default The Song of the Day Thread [April '09]

    Revivified!

The idea is to post one song per day as the official "Song of the Day", although additional ones are certainly welcome. They can be relevant to the day itself or not; it doesn't matter.

Nothing for today yet? Okey dokey - for Tuesday, April 7th. She's put out a lot of forgettable pop, but the girl can sing. Her last album showed signs of her maturing and learning some touch - we can only hope that continues.

I pulled some old Jerry Reed awhile ago, and I'm really enjoying it - especially "Guitar Man" and "East Bound and Down." "She Got The Gold Mine (And I Got The Shaft)" is a cute little novelty tune. He can play a little, I guess.

I enjoy some hardcore stuff (as in the dance music, though I enjoy punk too), but this wasn't up with my favourites. The long slow vocal-only part was tedious, and the music wasn't very interesting.

I've heard this one referred to a fair bit, but I don't think I've ever played it before. I think he should come to London and get on with it here, those damn rats-with-wings are everywhere!

Ok, there doesn't seem to be a song for today yet so

April 11th 2009 The Black Heart Procession - (YouTube)

Not my favorite of their songs, but there aren't many of them available for fee on the net and it's my favorite of the ones that are readily available. (Blue Tears is available as a full track on Last.fm also, which I almost picked instead, but it's a weird mix that isn't representative of what the song sounds like.)

They are another of my favorite bands, so you all might not like them. Black Heart are a somewhat local band (from San Diego) that haven't really taken off nationally (or, I assume internationally), but are very popular out here. Their shows sell out nearly instantly whenever they play. They fall into a category I call "Dark Folk", meaning they use traditional folk instrumentation and song structures, but play music with decidedly minor key tonality and the influence of some of the avante guarde sonic landscapers from the late 80s and early 90s along with a heavy presence of Kurt Weill influence. Similar more well knows artists would be Nick Cave and Tom Waits. More similar less well known artists would be Godspeed You Black Emperor, Three Mile Pilot (with whom they share members), and Pinback. Not all of their stuff is quite this downbeat or sonically spacey, but it isn't super far off. Surprisingly enough it's fantastic music to drive to played at high volume, and is also (more obviously) great headphone music.

The wind sound you hear in the background (starting at around 0:18) of this song is actually a bowed saw which contributes a lot to the feel of this whole album, where it is used prominently to create a spacey effect. It's good stuff, I hope you like it. Give the whole thing a chance it takes about 2 minutes for the song to actually start.

I did not know that. I was a huge fan of Underworld in the 80's - "Underneath the Radar" was one of my favourite albums. It took me a long time to get around to listening to them once they turned electronica or whatever they are now, but I love them just as much now.

"Twilight Zone" and "Radar Love" are rock station staples here in Canada (have been for decades now). I just picked any old Youtube clip of that song - I didn't realize that the live version I linked to was so good - those dudes can PLAY!

This song, and actually the entire it's on, is meant to evoke 80's pop. I've seen it compared to Kim Carnes, but it's actually more Kim Wilde. Also, very catchy.

Happy Rhodes is the female singer. She was originally Kimberly Rhodes but always called "Happy" from being a baby, as she always was (happy, not a baby)
Changed it legally when she was in her teens.

The musical genre "Ecto" is named for her debut album "Ecto".

Stumbled over her about a year ago after someone labeled Mylène Farmer "Ecto". Can't see it myself.

The musicians she associates with do appear a little on the pretentious side but are very capable and "Musician's musicians" They are all associated with Project Lo

Yeah, I have no doubt they are "musician's musicians" - that's where the "pretentious" comes in, I think - the type of guys who wouldn't be caught dead listening to a Justin Timberlake song.

Cool. I felt as if I was walking into a crowded neighborhood pub; you want to kind of look around before you just walk up to the bar and wave down the barkeep.

All right, Thursday, 23rd April 2009:

    Brand New,

I really dig this song. It's off of Deja Entendu, which is the album before their most recent. The harmony and tandem vocals are a little more sophisticated than usual for this style of music - almost elegant. Still gives me chills on the right day.

Good cautionary tale. The intro guitars give me a vibe of Eddy Van Halen 'brown' sound tinted with a bit of Creed.

P.S. What happened to Vox Imperatoris? He hasn't been on the boards for nearly two weeks.

Jumping the gun a little here but for Saturday 25th April 2009:

    Rod Stewart & Amy Bell - .

Not that fond of Rod Stewart but this is an old favourit from the seventies.
This (live, YouTube) version is very special though. The wonderful Amy Bell brings some sublime magic to it. What a fantastic smile she has too.

And there is a wonderful surprise at 3:03 too. Knocked my socks off

As covers go, this is one that excels. A huge improvement on the original.

I work for a CPA firm, champange is cooling in our fridge.
I can't believe they were in the 95% tax bracket!

Well, first there was a storm that put out my power and my internet connection because a tree ripped the power pole off of the side of my house, then I was really busy with school for a bit (not exams, though), then I kept putting off coming back onto the boards, and I felt guilty about it (mostly about the Diplomacy game I was in), causing me to put it off even more, but now I'm back.

    (27th April, 2009) Activ "Doar cu Tine" ( )

I already posted this as the IRC channel song of the day, but people liked it, so I'm going to post it here, too. It's in Romanian (the title translates to "Only with You"), and I think it's very good, although the dancing in the video seems a little bit too enthusiastic. It's better than " ", anyway.

There are several songs here on a rotating stream.
The second and third - one runs into the next, are the most accessible with the better video (IMO)

    (29th April, 2009) Smile.dk "Domo Domo Domo" ( )

One catchy earworm. The chorus is in Japanese because the song is supposed to be a "thank-you" to their fans, who are mostly Japanese (because most of their popularity is from the DDR games), but the band is Swedish. They are obsessed with Japan, though, if you couldn't tell; see their songs that came out last year. (They were on hiatus for five years, after both singers got married and had kids, and then Malin, the hot one, left. )

    From the lovely Mrs. Depp.

So understated. So sad too. What a shame it isn't commercially available, I'd buy it like a shot.
It is a personal tribute to the author of the song, Michel Berger, who died very suddenly and very young.

I'm living the bank holiday early, it would seem. Been convinced it was Wednesday all day.

Does that mean I can post another for Thursday April 30th?
