I forgot about Scotty; I always liked him, and I liked him even better when he was a guest star in episodes where he was allowed to expand his character.

I also forgot about "Enterprise" - I really like Doctor Phlox from that show.

Speaking only for myself, they both bugged me badly. I was always a big Yar fan, on the other hand. Butch, yet cute.

I liked Worf probably the best of the Next Gen characters but Data did annoy me. He was a poor rip-off of Spock at best. Of course Next Gen also suffered with both Crushers, Troi and Geordie the unfit Engineer. He never felt like a real Engineer to me. I never understood a transfer from Nav to Engineering anyway.

Well, Star Trek engineering and real-world engineering are two very different animals. Since ST engineering is mostly comprised of "spouting made-up technical words in tones alternately authoritative and urgent," Geordie's previous experience on Reading Rainbow probably served him well once he donned the banana clip.

What struck me about Janeway was that she always looked like she was ACTING, if you know what I mean. I really wanted to get behind a strong female captain, but whatsherface wasn't good enough to pull it off.

I don't really want to be threadshitting or derail the thread, but the reasons I never liked Spock are pretty simple and tied to some of my own issues with authority figures.

There's an episode where he's in command on the bridge and pretty much goes from station to station berating people for various minor shit that he should just get over. Extremely poor command behavior, as evidenced more than once.

"In precisely.....three....point....five....seconds". FROM WHEN? It took you longer than that to say that!

"Our odds are exactly 791.3 to 1 against". Oh? Really? I can think of quite a few variables in the equation that you don't know. Illogical to estimate so precisely with so many unknowns.


Anyway, as you see, I tend to like the minor characters more, the ones they actually allow to have a personality with real human flaws.

Well, Spock was second in command, and perhaps for the reasons you state.

Spock was an exceptional counterpoint to Kirk's more reckless, gut-feeling, shoot-from-the-hip Denny Crane style.

I love Spock. So there.

Sure seemed that whenever the chief engineer was in command something would threaten to eat the ship and fart out its antimatter in a mint sauce, and the C.E. would just be so damn calm, sensible and manager to manoeuvrer the enemy into flying up their own tailpipe.
