Default Reccomend Me Some Bank Robbery Movies

By far my favorite type of movie is bank robbery type movies. I enjoy the planning, the execution, and the possibility of a large payoff compared to an even larger risk.

Off the top of my head, I've seen:

Italian Job: Mark Wahlburg was pretty good, it was the first thing I remember in since I used to listen to him as Marky Mark (I don't watch much TV or movies, as can be evidenced by the fact that this is my first post in this forum, I haven't had cable for 3/4 of my life). I especially like how they crashed the safe through the floor and took it on a boat.

Oceans 11-13. Eleven was good. The other two were anticlimacti, IMHO.

The Bank Job is one I haven't had a chance to check out yet.

Reservoir Dogs was pretty awesome, but I haven't seen it in a long time.

As you can see, I don't even really know or remember enough about movies to write about them, but I'd love some suggestions of the type I mentioned above. Thanks!

The Bank Job is awesome, but kind of disjointed. I especially enjoyed the precision that went into the robbery's planning, as well as the character development. Jason Statham's character really wanted to change and do right by his family and it's interesting to watch him decide.

    Seconding Inside Man. Great movie.
I'm not good at the advice. Can I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

Ahh, yes, I LOVED that movie! Forgot the name of it, though.

What's the name for the type of movie like The Departed or The Recruit where it's the opposite of dramatic Irony, where some of the characters know the real story, but the audience and some main characters don't find out until the end?

Not the most fantastic movie in the world, but Set It Off is four chicks robbing banks.

Most people hate it, but I kinda liked Die Hard 3, featuring an impressive bank robbery.

Dog's Day Afternoon comes to mind, though the personality and humanity of the people are explored way more than bank robbing itself.

    Dark Knight

"Millions" by slumdog director Dany Boyle. Not about a robbery, but it does detail a robbery as part of the plot, this is a great movie!

Sexy Beast is very good, directed by Johnathan Glazer, and it has Ray Winstone and Ben Kinglsey, a very tense movie.
Heat, both versions were kinda fun
The Italian Job - the original of course.

I came in to say "Inside Man" too.

Although it's not a bank robbery, have you seen the original Ocean's 11?

I think what you're looking for are heist films.

There's a Robert DeNiro/Edward Norton film called The Heist.

I just remembered there is a bank robbery in Cidade de Deus (City of God)

a really good film from Brazil, though a bit violent. I wanted to read and find out if all that violence was based on true events, but I haven't gotten to doing that yet. they take human life very casually in this movie, and it is hard to believe its strict story telling based on true events... still pretty intriguing movie

Gun Crazy (aka Deadly is the Female) is an old fim noir that's kind of a precurser to Bonnie and Clyde and has a couple of really cool bank robbery sequences. Netflix has it.

No way! they are really making a Dillinger movie?? I was just watching the Assassination of Jesse James and telling my friend that Dillinger has a much more intriguing bio.

I'm sure I've already seen trailers for it.

Thunderbolt and Lightfoot-Clint Eastwood, George Kennedy, a very young Jeff Bridges, and others. It's based (somewhat) on the IRL robbery of the Brink's terminal in Syracuse, NY.

Thief-James Caan. This is one technically good bank job movie, IMO.

If you don't mind older movies, you might try The Killing from the 1950s, directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Quick Change. Really underrated bank-heist comedy starring Bill Murray, Randy Quaid, and Geena Davis as the robbers, and Jason Robards Jr as the cop pursuing them. Tony Shalhoub appears in a large-ish cameo as a paranoid cabbie. It's an unusual take on the genre, because it begins with a beautifully executed robbery (and a fairly clever plan) that goes flawlessly, followed by the main body of the story in which everything after the heist goes spectacularly wrong. Very satisfying movie.

A couple of Ealing comedies about robbing banks are The Ladykillers and The Lavender Hill Mob (the latter being unusual because the person organising the bank robbery has worked for the bank for 20 years, so it's an inside job).

Oh, one I saw recently was Ladrón que roba a ladrón.

Plot: Two former thieves reunite to rob the biggest thief they know -- Moctesuma Valdez, a TV infomercial guru who's made millions selling worthless health products to poor Latino immigrants. When none of their affiliates want to go undercover as day laborers to pull off the heist, the two men turn to the real thing for help.

Ahh, yes, that's a much better description. I liked that movie a lot, too; I just can never remember the names of them. I can remember complex equations and numbers from projects I worked on five years ago, but not actors names or faces. Thanks!

Some great suggestions, guys, my queue is thanking you!!

The Hong Kong movie City on Fire -- a jewelry store heist, not a bank robbery, but within earshot of the OP's request, I think. It's mostly known among film geeks as the answer to a trivia question: what movie did Quentin Tarantino rip off for Reservoir Dogs. (There's a 20-minute sequence toward the end of City on Fire that Tarantino reworked and expanded into the body of Res Dogs. The majority of City on Fire is the planning and execution of the robbery, and the parallel police story.) Worth seeing on its own merits; it's a little herky jerky at points, some of the characterization is thin, and the action isn't quite as stylized as you might expect from a Hong Kong production, but overall it's a solid B+ flick.

What about The Silent Partner with Elliot Gould and Christopher Plummer?

It is more based around a bank robbery than about one, I'll admit.

These aren't quite bank robbery movies, but you might like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and A Fish Called Wanda. They both involve con-men trying to pull one over on unsuspecting victims (and sometimes each other) all for the sake of money.

There is a robbery in A Fish Called Wanda, but it's diamonds, not a bank.

You might also enjoy The Sting. Robert Redford, Paul Newman, really good movie.

ETA: Speaking of Jeff Bridges, isn't The Big Lebowski basically a messed up heist movie? And Raising Arizona?
