    Default Self Portrait Thread

Photographic or otherwise, post ’em here. If there’s a story to go along with it, post that, too.

Taken on Maui in one of the many waterfalls on the road to Hana.
The water went from ankle-deep to eyeball-deep in one unexpected step. I was planning on standing, not treading water, during the shot.

    The look on my face:

...is a combination of “oh, crap, where did the bottom go?” “damn this water’s cold” and “this is going to be a crappy picture.” It turned out OK, though.

Are you looking for actual *self* portraits? If so, how on earth did you self-portrait yourself in the water? Long timer setting?

Anyway: Me, with my lab-mix Ladybug, circa 1998, taken with my ancient Mavica in timer mode.

Me, trying to show off my new earrings. Kodak Easyshare in self-portrait mode.

Me with my lovebird going to sleep on my head, taken with the Kodak.

In this case, yes. My camera has a 30-second delay setting. I've read that some cameras only have a 10 second delay or less, which I see as a uselessly short amount of time.

However, in the past I have set up self-portraits, devised and staged by myself, and had my wife hit the button. To get to the waterfall in my picture above, you have to carefully walk down a ravine 20 or 30 feet below the road. She couldn't make it due to a knee injury sustained on a creekwalk earlier in the day, so self-portrait it was.

    Here's two:

They're not great pictures of me, but it's the best I have on my computer. I have gotten longer hair and then gotten a haircut to slightly shorter hair since. The first one is my Facebook picture, which I really need to change.

Here are some more I just remembered I had of a ski trip a year ago (almost exactly, in fact, since the trip was during Spring Break last year):

ETA: Actually, the more I look at that second picture, the more I like it better than the first one, which makes my nose look big. I might change my Facebook picture to that until I can take one better than either. My main problem with pictures is that I can never smile right, which is not helped by the fact that I'm self-conscious about my teeth. I've inherited my father's death grimace.

Accidental self-portrait taken last year while bored and idly playing with the camera function on my phone during a 13 hour drive to Connecticut with sweetie. Out the window, you can see Pennsylvania.
I'm surprised it's as good a picture as it is.

Your classic "playing with a camera and a mirror." And a bird.

And from my summer vacation, driving from Minneapolis to Seattle. We met a kid in Helena who is studying forestry at Missoula. He hand-drew us a map to Weir Hot Springs, which he said no one knew about. We were really looking forward to having the place to ourselves, but when we arrived, there was already someone there. So we killed him.
