    Default Stuff I Wrote

Since they're all quite short, I'm just going to post them all in one post here. All comments welcome.

In Reverse, We Do Not Die,

    we coalesce
    from dust, to mud,
    to flesh.

    A thousand bits of ghost
    collapse, to fuel
    a sudden breath.

    ?

    Papyrus;

    an empty sheet. I’ve waited
long to lean in, to write
    my love upon her skin.

    ?

On Internalism, Externalism, And The Obtaining Of Relations

I quantify over the domain of gazes
and I define a relation over that domain such that
"they meet" is true if and only if they meet.
Let us call the obtaining of this condition "M."

    Now,
it is possible (in the epistemic sense)
that condition M obtained, that day:
    you stepped away,
    forgot your friends,
    looked around at other things.

Shall we say that, at that instant,
    my mental state's description
included the notion of M de re?
Or was it merely de dicto?

    ?

At The End Of A Game Of Go

    A final stone.
    The rain falls outside
    and inside, the thunder.

God, I love those. I really really love those. They are beautiful. Amazing. I find myself reading them over and over.

In Reverse, We Do Not Die,

The notion of breath and spirt as one is as old as humanity. You've brought it into focus with exactly the right words, and in exactly the right way. Fantastic.

    Papyrus;

With three short lines, you've created one of the most romantic poems I've ever seen. It's like Hemingway's story about the baby shoes. You've conveyed the entire history of your relationship. Stunning.

On Internalism, Externalism, And The Obtaining Of Relations

As an armchair philosopher who dabbles in modal logic, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Differenting an epistemic possibility from a metaphysical possibility, and a wonderful tip o' the hat to pre-correspondence truth and truth obtaining. Very very good.

At The End Of A Game Of Go

I mean Jesus. Is this something you do all the time? Do you have more of these? They should be published (in the traditional sense). Speusippus. I'm a fan.

Hey, Liberal, I really appreciated that.

Unfortunately, this is not something I do all the time. When I was a younger lad, I wrote copiously. But it was almost all absolutely terrible. My output of stuff I now consider decent is, oh, maybe about one short poem every six months or so.

I wish I could write more, but I don't seem to have it in me.

95 percent of everything is garbage.

This is the first time in years that I've written 4K words on a story and haven't wanted to trash it.

And poetry is much harder. I don't even bother unless I don't respect the audience.

Writing is like cleaning out an old house. To get the good stuff out, you've got to get the garbage out. If you're lucky, you know what's garbage and what's not.
