Default Crappy, Filthy McDonald's Iced Tea

This has been eating at me for months.

I drink iced tea in the morning instead of coffee. Like most people, I would like to just drive through some place
and get my morning jolt on the quick.

McDonald's would seem like th perfect place, but actually getting a decent iced tea there is about a 1-in-3 proposition.

Today I actually just threw my tea away.

McDonald's clearly brews the tea in the same makers as the coffee, but only rarely washes out the makers between brews.

The result: Tea that tastes like burnt coffee.

I could stop at Starbucks, and have, but a "Venti" is the largest cup they have, and once you allow for ice, you're really looking at
    a Quattro.

I contacted McDonald's about this recently, and after being read a prepared statement was dismissed. I was later mailed a coupon for...(wait for it)
    a free cup of coffee!

Yeah, I could go someplace else, but it's not as easy. I have to look at these stupid arches everywhere, I am willing to pay $2.00 for $.25 worth
of material content, why can't I just get what want?

    Argh!

Note: As any iced tea lover knows, Burger Kings serves intolerable "fountain tea" that tastes, more or less, like a Baggie.

    I feel better now.

You realize you could entirely solve this problem by drinking coffee like a normal person, right?

I have never. NEVER. Gotten restaurant iced tea which is any good. I think you are searching for the unattainable! Then again, I live in a place where tea-making is a must-have skill.

Brewing tea in the same machine as coffe is an abomination. Blech.

In my experience Arby's has great sweet iced tea. They sell it by the gallon around here if you want to take some home. It is obviously brewed and not that fountain iced tea crap so if you have an Arby's on your route to work I would give it a shot.

On what planet?! There is only one fast food place that makes anything that even comes close to passing for iced tea and that's Chick-fil-a.

Oh, this brings me to the worst iced tea I've ever had. The familia and I were on the road home after a long day of visiting family and friends. Both the husband and kiddo were hungry, and so husband decides to pull into the McDonald's just before the freeway. I wasn't hungry, but a little thirsty--an iced tea would be perfect, I thought. I took a sip, and it tasted as if they had used the tea pot as their wash water after the breakfast shift--no iced tea should EVER taste like rotten Egg McMuffin. EVER.

I still feel like wanting to rinse out my mouth when I think about it.

Bleah. That beats my worst "McDonalds employees not cleaning out the container before putting something else in it" story from several years ago, IIRC. I'm a vegetarian (no, no seafood/poultry/animal-based broths, etc., just dairy and eggs) and at the time had a horrible cold. My husband stopped at the McDonalds drivethru and I ordered some of their yummy broccoli cheese soup, to soothe my throat - my nose was stuffed up enough that my sense of taste was not so good. We got home and dug into the food. I tasted the soup and it didn't taste right, so I sniffed it and that wasn't right either, but I figured hey, I have a cold. I asked my husband to taste it. He proclaimed that it must be at least half clam chowder.

Color me flabberghasted to see the words "McDonald's" and "yummy" in the same sentence. Have you people all gone mad, or have you just lost all sense of taste?

Hey, their soup was good. I'm sure the employees at the stores also had nothing to do with them other than refilling the soup warmer with premade bags of the stuff. Occasionally mixing the wrong kinds...

That was the last time I ate at one, since I had ceased to trust anything from them. If it wasn't Corporate hiding that they were dipping their potato products in beef broth, then it was employees managing to accidentally slip me some clam chowder.

Yeah, I am, like you, veg. And that fry-beef-tallow thing was really dirty.

Seriously, if you can't trust an enormous, multi-national franchise operation fronted by a clown, who can you trust?

You are all not going to believe this, but White Castle has fantastic sweet iced tea, brewed there and everything. Seriously. I'm not sure if it was just the one location off I-70 east of Indy, but damn. I got like a gallon of it last time.

The secret of excellent home brewed iced tea is to make sugar syrup beforehand

Seems like the McDonalds in the South and the Midwest get it right. When I drove from PA to CA in 2001 I was stopping at McDonalds every few hours (the Monopoly game was on) and was drinking a lot of iced tea. The quality peaked in Illinois then declined as I got further west.

Well, it ain't worthy of bein' called 'sweet tea' unless it's the consistency of pancake syrup.

    And about as sweet.

I wish y'all could find some other name for it. It ain't Tea.

It is a relative of tea, I will go that far.

    But no farther.

How about . . .Pea? That sounds about right.

Or, given the inablility of any establishment in the US to boil water: Teapid.

But then, what difference does it make?

You put ice and sugar in it.

Why? So it can sit there an crystallize? Iced tea is bitter, not sweet. If you want it sweet I'll be glad to make up sugar syrup for you. But for all that's holy, don't assume that's the only way to drink iced tea.

Any sweet tea lover try the McDonald's sweet tea?

They pushed it hard around here this past summer. I can't stand sweet tea, so I didn't try it.

Does the sweet tea end up blended with out-of-code coffee, too?

I am sipping on some iced tea from Chipotle right now, and it's yummy, clean refreshing.

Of course, unlike McDonalds, Chipotle uses dedicated iced tea brewers that aren't also used for coffee, urinal cake rinsing, and coven brew.

Here in Buffalo, getting decent iced tea in restaurants has about a 1 in 10 chance of success. It's either pre-sweetened (WHY?), fountain crap (ugh) or was made about 3 weeks ago in the soup pot.

I drink water, mostly, any more.

The worst version I've ever had was years ago at the Vermontville Maplefest. We stopped to dine in a small restaurant downtown, ordered iced tea, took one sip and (hmmm, no barfy smilie).

They'd sweetened it with maple syrup.

Now can we get a barfy smilie, Hmmmm?

Got a warm iced tea from a McDonald's today. Didn't taste bad, but tepid tea isn't especially refreshing. Had time to go in and get some ice added.

In case any of you ever visit Western Canada, don't order the iced tea. We only have fountain iced tea or powdered iced tea or whatever you want to call it; we like it that way, and we make no apologies for it, but Americans seem to take it really hard.

(Well, thinking about it, there is the odd restaurant that will actually serve you a brewed tea if you order iced tea, but don't bet on it.)

Hmm, powdered iced tea and round bacon. This goes a long way towards explaining William Shatner.

I was going to offer to send you some Milo's Tea. But then you said something I didn't understand about it not being sweet? Hmmm, I am unfamiliar.

Milo's has unsweet tea, but I am not sure that it has been brewed because the batch they ran in 1988 probably hasn't been sold out yet.

Anyway, I can ship it to you if you promise to drink it with a slice of lemon (not squeezed, just hanging in there so it wafts by you every once in a while) with that little soft ice pellets. If you are lucky I'll send you a burger too.
Something witty and just obscure enough to make you think I'm cool.

I'll cop to the powdered iced tea, but Canadian bacon is just what Americans call back bacon (round bacon) - our bacon here is exactly the same as yours. If you order bacon anywhere here, you'll get bacon, not some weird round stuff. Sorry, have to shoot down your Shatner theory.

So wait...what do you call Canadian bacon in Canada?

And, is it true that American cheese is called mild cheddar up there?

And despite all this, William Shatner is still someone's fault.

    Whoa.

I thought coffee-flavored iced tea was bad. This woman got solvent-flavored solvent as iced tea at Micky D's.

This is probably too rational to consider, but why not brew up a jug of tea at home, stick it in the fridge, and fill a thermos with tea and ice before heading out in the morning?
