Default Voting thread for new Great Debates name

The other thread's now into its second page, and it's got some serious contenders. Please vote for one. If there is a tie, it'll go to a run-off. I took the names with serious support, so Syllojism didn't make the cut. (Sorry). Voting will close at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time Monday to allow as many people to vote for it as possible.

Argument Clinic - that's definitely the feeling I got from most topics on the 'old' boards.

Surely you must not have noticed my "Forensic Pathology" offering, the sheer wittiness of which I think is undeniable.

I liked the Crucible quite a bit actually, the idea of a tiny ceramic pot that heats up and combines different elements to create an entirely new molecule is kinda cool.

Or it just ends up blowing up in smoke.
Well done.

I decided to ultimately throw my vote behind The Crucible based on the argument that we should title the forum after what we want it to be not what we think it might become.

(That and someone said that Plato's Playground sounded like a sex park and now I can't break that association.)

Ah, but "Argument Clinic" allows for humour AND the very title ought to keep out people who just want to say "yes, it is, "no, it isn't".

And "Plato's Playground" offers the danger of giving everyone the feeling of "eek, no, a philosophy tutorial and I have not done proper background reading." Sob sob. Tremble.

Only joking, really. Not keen on "Nerd Fight", though.

Aaargh! If I'd known the scores I wouldn't have voted the way I did. I'm really not keen on Nerd Fight - I want to vote for "anything but that". I'm content with either The Crucible or Argument Clinic.

Good point. I am warming to the idea of calling it The Argument Clinic. Not as much as The Crucible, but if I could have placed two votes I would have probably placed one there.

It's also the name for the last "test" of U.S. Marine recruits at Parris Island. It is a grueling two- or three-day excercise involving spending at least one night outdoors in the swamp. I kind of like the name as well.

Disclaimer: I may not have characterized the Marines' Cruicible correctly. I got this info second hand from my son, so blame my feeble memory and his storytelling abilities. 8-)

I think votes should be weighted by amount of time spent in the forum. I live in Great Debates (and the Pit), so Nerd Fight doesn't feel all that great to me. Sounds like a name that people who don't frequent it would call it.

You wouldn't want me coming up with a name for MPSIMS, for example.

I don't know about weighted votes, but I would be in favor of a run off if there isn't a clear majority.

Oh, I don't know...I spend more time in GD than anywhere else, I think, and I think Nerd Fight is a perfect name for it.

But upon thinking about it some more, I think it would be fun if all the forums have a name that represents real-life/non-Internet locations, since most of them have that kind of name already. The problem is, I don't love any of the ones listed for this particular forum (sorry to the folks who came up with them!), and I can't think of a better one. Is "The Forum" too generic?

Then we could rename Jibba Jabba to something like "The Water Cooler" or "The Coffee House" or some such, and they'd all match.

I read that and thought-- we want it to become an Arthur Miller play?

Eek, I have just remembered that, as well as the play, obviously, "Crucible " is the name of a theatre or something in Sheffield in which lots of snooker happens. Do not want snooker.

No, I'm fine with you coming up with a name for MPSIMS. I don't think any particular forum should have a Guardian of Elites who control its policy. This board is for everyone to enjoy.

Taken with the mac iSight camera, photobooth program, using Effects. If anyone out there has an apple and a small child, you can easily entertain them for a good long while with photobooth effects. We didn't get a lot of work done in class the day.

All the names on the list are terrible, so if I have to vote it'll be against Nerd Fight.

Nevermind I saw that Nerd Fight isn't winning. That's a relief. I voted for The Crucible. At least the least terrible of all the names are the two leading contenders.

Hey, it looks like we have a tie!

I know we're not supposed to come up with new ideas, but the name Debate Club just came to me tonight and it's, I don't know, just so simple, so elegant, having its own identity without forsaking its roots. Maybe we can throw some of these new ideas in with the runoff vote? It may take some time to come down with a true winner, but that's OK, right? I mean, as I see it, it's more important to have the best possible name than to name it quickly. What say you?

Yeah, but... I don't know how long it's been since you were in school, but I saw a documentary recently about modern Debate Clubs. It's basically an exercise in who can talk the fastest. They sound like auctioneers. Only specially trained listeners can even understand them. It all impressed me as a lot of wasted breath.

Oh, hell, okay. I guess I've convinced myself you're right.

Speaking as the person who'd originally suggested Nerd Fight, I'd rather see a run off, too. If that wins, it shouldn't be by just one vote. At the very least I'll need more people than that to protect me from the angry mob.

If "Nerd Fight" wins and there's another viable option within a point or two, we will have a run-off. I know there was some voter's regret expressed, and, frankly, I'm not crazy about "Nerd Fight."

That was my pick also.

Another I like is Sophistry and Illusion, but there's a Doper by that name, so if he ever joined up here, things could get, ah, interesting, no?
Don't worry; it looks like I'm losing.
I like either the Crucible or the Argument Clinic. I'm not sure I have a preference between the two, though. If I decide that I do, then I guess I'll vote.

[modhat:t4kmv7q0]I'm closing this thread. Voting was supposed to end at midnight, and, well, not having slept well the night before, I kinda petered out.

Since there is a clear winner, I'll be taking the Crucible to the tech staff as the final candidate. Nerd Fight lost conclusively, so there's no reason to have a run-off.[/modhat:t4kmv7q0]

So what's the significance of The Crucible? None of the wiki entries seems conclusive to me.
