Overview
The basic premise is that each player has a target and is trying to "assassinate" said target by getting her/him to post a particular word. In turn, each player will also have an assassin who is trying to get him/her to post a word.
All players will be arranged in a circle so that everyone has one target and one assassin. The Game Moderator (GM) will send a Private Message (PM) to each player with a target player and the word that will kill the target.
Every so often the GM will assign new words; any one word is sufficient to eliminate a player. Ask all the leading questions you want, but be careful. If your target figures you out they can counterassassinate you.
Rule of Counterassassination: To kill your assassin, you must publicly name the player in the Assassins game thread, along with the word or one of the words you think that player wants you to type. (Just post, "I think so-and-so is trying to get me to say X" or put the title "Counterassassination Attempt" in your post.) If you guess the right word but the wrong assassin, or if you make 3 wrong guesses in a row (without assassinating or counterassassinating anyone), you will be eliminated.
If you assassinate a player, PM the GM, who will verify the kill. Your next target is the player your target was hunting. If you counterassassinate your assassin, your new assassin is whoever was hunting that player.
After a kill is made, the GM will PM the assassinated with the word that killed him/her, and the assassin with a new target and word(s). When a counterassassination attempt is made, the GM will PM the player to tell the player whether the guess was right or wrong. If correct, the GM will then inform the counterassassinated player's assassin of the new target and kill word(s).
Anyone may join the game. Anyone may post to this thread, regardless of that person's status in the game or whether that person is even playing the game at all. The game ends when there is only one assassin left alive. At this time, the GM will announce the winner and post a quick overview of the game play.
When a game ends, the winner will have the option to host the next round, if there is one. If the winner chooses not to host the next round, the GM duties are up for grabs.
Special Role: Designated Decoy
There may or may not be one Designated Decoy. The Decoy's identity will be kept secret, and such person will be given a list of all the players' kill words but not told who is playing or which words are whose. The Decoy will not be part of the circle and therefore will not have an assassin or kill words. The GM will depend on the Decoy to keep the thread going if ever it should slow down too much.
Miscellaneous Rules
The GM will not reveal the exact number of players during play, nor the identity or status of any player if at all possible. Kill words and targets must, for obvious reasons, be kept secret. Don't tell anyone you've killed her/him, or your status in the game, or whether a counterassassination attempt was successful, etc.
Your kill word will work whether or not you are in conversation with your assassin, or even if your assassin has not yet posted. Even James Bond probably walked into a door sometime.
Your kill word will work in any thread in any forum on DoMeBo message board. Kill words will not work on alternate message boards. If DoMeBo crashes for a long while, the GM may extend the Rule of Posting Frequency appropriately.
Each player is responsible for his/her own assassinations. If a post that would kill a target player slips by the would-be assassin, then the poster "dodges a bullet." The GM will not take any action to eliminate a player unless and until the assassin sends a PM stating that the target has posted a kill word.
Try not to edit.
If you quote someone and the quote contains your kill word, this does not count as a kill. The word must have originated from your keyboard in order to kill you. If it's in quote tags or the sigline, it's a quote.
Words which are derived from a kill word count as a kill. "Risk" will match "risky" and "catch" will match "caught", but "cat" will not match "concatenation."
In the cases of kill word derivations, rules clarifications, anomalies, or any other weird things that happen, the GM will discuss them in PM or e-mail rather than players risking blowing their covers or offing themselves in the process. The GM will make decisions that are as fair as possible. Once the GM has made a decision, the decision is final.
Remember, folks, it's just a game. It's supposed to be fun, so ask questions, make conversation, and have a good time!
