Default CPAC straw poll of 2012 Republican presidential contenders

CPAC did a straw poll of attendees to find out who has the early conservative support for the 2012 Republican nomination. Mitt Romney won with 20%, as he did in 2007 AND in 2008. Jindal came in second with 14%.

Considering that Romney won in previous years and didn't have all that impressive a showing in 2008, what if anything can we glean about this poll? I'm curious whether anyone thinks Jindal's second place showing is a good sign for him (second), a bad sign for him (14%), or no sign at all.

(Rush Limbaugh apparently argued that the Republicans lost because they weren't conservative enough in 2008. Does ANYONE really believe this?)

Isn't it kind of early to be doing a straw poll for 2012?

I hope they persist in this delusion that moving even further to the right will solve all their problems, though. Their cognitive dissonance knows no bounds.

a Mormon may one day be elected to be POTUS. But it's not going to be any time soon, and it's not going to be Romney.

    To be specific:
    Romney: 20%
    Jindal: 14%
    Palin: 13%
    Paul: 13%
    Gingrich: 10%

Nobody outside of Georgia is going to vote for Newt, as his day was in the 90s, and he wasn't all that successful then. When it comes down to it, most Republican primary voters are not going to be able to pull the lever for a non-Caucasian or non-Protestant. As for Paul and Palin, Paul is a nutjob and Palin is as well, though in ways more appealing to Repubs. Palin probably has the best chance.

Well, bear in mind that nobody would have predicted Obama winning the nomination or election in 2008 after seeing him in 2004. Four years is an awfully long time.

I think Ken'll argue with you there. (I think he was the one who predicted it.)

I wish Ron Paul were a better candidate, but alas, it is not to be. I think it's far too early to be predicting who'll be in the 2012 election, and I still want at least a year or two before I have to talk about it again. And Captain Carrot, I think you're overestimating the racism/religious bias of most Republicans, even the primary voters. I think someone like Jindal would do just fine, although I don't like him specifically because of his hyper-religiosity and pro-Intelligent Design stance.

He needs to get rid of the NBC Page jacket, though.

I'd never heard of Obama before he gave his speech at the convention in '04, and my first thought was, "Why the hell isn't he running?" He was articulate, charismatic, and everything Kerry was not. Whatever one might think of Obama and his policies, he certainly seems to be poised to be the Dem version of Reagan.

I suppose the deciding factor will be whether she keeps pace with Bristol in the meantime.

I'm predicting 3 more kids for Sarah and 2 for Bristol by 2012.

Also, incidentally, Julie, what was your SDMB name? Is there a thread with that somewhere?

Cool, thanks, just curious, I didn't think there was a 'Julie' on the SDMB, at least not one who posted much.

    Oooh! Somebody's gonna get slapped!
Joe "The Plumber" Wurzelbacher said Wednesday he might run for Congress one day. But if he won, his colleagues might need to wear headgear to the House floor.

"I'd probably be in jail more often than I'd be on the Hill for slapping some member," said Wurzelbacher at a lunchtime discussion at Americans for Tax Reform. "And that's not [bull] either."

With a couple of years to go, obviously, Jindal's favorable rating is at 15% (including "very" and "somewhat" positive), unfavorables at 15% (including "very" and "somewhat" negative), neutral at 13% and don't know (including "don't know name") at 57%.

I think this is a great result for Jindal. That speech didn't torpedo him amongst regular folk. Regular folk weren't paying attention to it/him.

Full results here, it's a pdf.

I called the 2008 election in 2004. I have no idea where the post was, but I remember calling it and I especially remember thinking it whenever I saw him on TV. I didn't get much love for it back then, and frankly, I don't get much love for it now. Bah.

Jindal may not have hurt himself with the speech, but he didn't help himself either. I think the GoP Nominee in 2012 probably isn't going to be any of the guys listed as "front runners" today. Would not be at all surprised to see Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi toss his hat in the ring, but I don't know how far he'd get.

Rush is fucking nuts if he thinks moving further to the right is going to help the party. I've said for a long time, paraphrasing Richard Pryor, that the GoP needs to tell the Religious Right to have a coke and a smile and shut the fuck up. They aren't going to vote Dem. If they do try to form a third party, they'll guarantee Dems win the next election. They either learn to accept that they have more in common with a less conservative GoP than they do with Dems, or they'll be living under Dems for the forseeable future.

I remember shortly after the election some numbers coming out that seemed to show that Republicans stayed home in 2008 compared to 2004. Does anyone know if that's right?
