Look around at other message boards. You'll understand the hate for flashing, spinning, screaming,animated change 5 times a day monstrosities that are avatars. Add in dozens of "smilies" and you'll start twitching.

I like the fact that almost everyone here has chosen avatars that represent who they are and only a few have changed them even once while trying them out. We're being adults.

I didn't sign up here out of outrage or being fed up with the SDMB. While I agree with the overwhelming consensus that the new anti-profanity rules are beyond retarded, I have an awful hard time caring that much about them. Some, like the no abusing of moderators, I'm even on board with. In general I think it is fair to say I prefer my message boards moderated, moderated reasonably, but possibly with a slight tendency towards the authoritarian. I don't like free-for-alls and I didn't like much of the juvenile crap on display during the Lost Weekend Pit extravaganza ( after the first half-day, which was fun ). But mostly I just don't care much, so that Ed blundering around, hamfistedly fixing what ain't broke, just registers as an annoyance. Kinda of on a par with realizing I'm out of iced tea.

That said, I realize that posters I like in some fashion or another and who are quite legitimately more annoyed than me, may well wander off. So I got an invite, was impressed with the rapid migration over here and decided to sign up. I've been keeping an eye on this board, like I occasionally keep an eye on the Unaboard and will post as the urge strikes. But the biggest strike against this place and the Unaboard ( and no offense to either, I like that one and so far I like this one ), is simply size and breadth of conversation. This place hasn't yet reached enough critical mass yet to keep me fully entertained in of itself on those late nights when I'm at work and bored . Also one of the things I hated about "pay to post" and am somewhat concerned about here is the lack of fresh blood and turnover. Small "friends" boards are fun and I've been a member of several, but they do tend to stagnate.

On the other hand, who knows - CL has their ass in a crack and the SDMB may truly go under. Or Ed may just flat out go insane and start randomly re-naming posters after famous Terhune collies or something . In such a circumstance I'd really appreciate having places like these as a fall back.

But I haven't opened the Dope in the past 3 days except to check for PMs, and this morning to see what ridiculous "banned words" list they came up with over the weekend. And guess what? I don't miss it one bit!

My final straw wasn't even the retarded new rules, per se, but the fact that Lynn Bodoni couldn't even be bothered to answer my question in ATMB as to what she meant by some vague "Strongly Worded Recommendation" she'd made. I still don't understand that particular bit of moderation, and now they just enacted a whole slew of even less clear warnable offenses. It's been more than 9 years; I'm just tired of it all.

I don't plan to stop posting at the SDMB, but I have a general feeling of distaste when I am there right now. I genuinely love the place, but I'm quite upset at the how the recent events have been handled. I don't want to hasten the slowing down of the boards, but I don't feel real motivated to provide content for them at the moment. Old habits are hard to break, but I believe in voting with my dollars/feet/keystrokes.

I really don't want the SDMB to die. And I've always wanted to do what I can to support it. But this time, Ed has quite clearly told me to take my 9 years and 8,000+ posts of good board citizenship and fuck off. But Ed is not the boards. I have no loyalty to him, but I do have loyalty to the SDMB community.

So, as you can see, I have mixed feelings. So, I'm not leaving the Dope just yet, but I'm not sure what will happen as time goes by.

I plan to stay at both, at least for the time being. Let's face it, the SDMB isn't going to fail completely unless Someone In Charge decides the whole venture isn't worth the hassle or expense and pulls the plug. As long as the SDMB boards are there, by virtue of the whole "Cecil Adams" thing, there will be new people attracted to those boards and signing up there. The challenge we have is attracting our own members, independent of the SDMB, and encouraging them to stay and become part of the community. Time will tell how successful that is, but ultimately there's a lot of potential here and people want to make it work, which is great.

Like a number of others, it's not so much a matter of "abandoning" the other board as not having time to post in more than one place. Also, I like the 'intimate' feel of this place. On the Dope, I often felt like I was a half-step behind the rest of the board. Here, I feel like I can actually contribute without being lost in the crowd. I know part of that is just due to the fact that this board is new and fairly small, but I do get a sense of being a 'part of something' here. I think I've posted more to this board today than I posted over there in the past 6 months.

My sentiments exactly. As I said on the SDMB, I think I've only ever pitted another poster once, and I don't believe I used any of the Seven Words You Can't Say On US Network TV in that pit, but like yourself I take extreme umbrage at being told that I now have to be civil or else (I like to think I'm civil all the time, because I want to be, not because I have to be) and that the Reich Language Ministry have further promulgated a list of words that are now Verboten even though they were fine a week ago, with an addendum that we've always been at war with Eastasia thrown in as well.

For posting under two usernames. I had been off the SDMB for two years, and I didn't remember my login info or what email my account was associated with. So I created a new login. My first post went,
something like

Hi, I was old username, but now I'm new username... blah blah blah

I got an email for a moderator a couple of weeks later saying that they would have to merge the accounts. I just had to pick which name to keep. Ok, no prob, I chose a name, but the accounts were never merged.

A couple of weeks later... I made a couple of posts to the political threads, and they decided I wasn't in the click anymore. I made no insults or threats or used any foul language on the boards, but I was officially banned for life for having two usernames...

Good riddance.

No, I'm not going back to the Dope, under the conditions assumed by the OP. Frankly, the way the community has sprang up to rally around domebo, the way the admins have been so responsive at our beck and call, and the air of democracy and freedom here have got me feeling totally invested in this board and not at all in the Dope.

There were times when I would've done a lot to keep the Dope running strong. Now, not so much; it just feels like the corporate coffee chain I used to work for.

For me, I am abandoning the board. It's not that I don't have time; since I've been sitting in bed with flu-lite over the past few days, I have all the time in the world. I just don't like the SDMB anymore.

Same here. To me, Giraffe's board is even worse because he has a cult of personality board with no personality! It just looks like the SDMB. Domebo is the only place that feels like home to me now.

I wasn't planning on leaving the Dope, to be honest I was intending to keep posting there and just have a peek in here.

But things are going so well over here, and there's so much going on I'm finding I just don't have the time for the Dope at the moment.

And I find myself a lot in agreement with scissorjack and Martini Enfield TBH - I was not one of the posters who spent my time cussing up other posters and pitting people left, right and centre. In fact, apart from the minirants threads and a couple of other pit threads aimed at companies or circumstances, I really did keep my nose clean. I was definitely not parading around calling people cunts.

But the way this has all gone down has left a sour taste in my mouth. So I'm happy to be at Domebo. I'll peek in at the Dope from time to time, but I'm thinking my time there is passing and I won't be re-upping or posting much any more.

At the moment I pan to do both, just because I've invested a lot of time (if not posts) in the Dope ovr the years and don't want to just walk away.

Plus there are still a few interesting discussions going on there. As this board grows, who knows, if it eclipses the Dope and doesn't just become the home for disaffected ex-Dopers then I may move here entirely.

I am hoping we get Stranger and Chronos to come aboard fto answer science questions, plsu Stranger was always funny too.
