I think this is what it was all about. Nothing much else makes sense. He solved a problem that barely existed and as a result might of seriously damaged the board. I am shocked by the number of very active posters that are at least taking a serious look at domebo. So far Ed has done nothing right to grow the dope. He could have asked for and got a lot of help but instead he refused the help and seems intent on annoying the membership. The views of the SDMB since he took a more active role have actually decreased. He desperately needs to increases viewership to save the Dope.

I thought he got way too much crap over his fix-it/book promotion forum. That really did not hurt anyone, but the stuff with Sapo and this new list and the lack of upgrades and reasonable feedback is really going to far. That and the fact that I have seen you warned for Jr. Modding far less that DsYoungEsq does and your was helpful as often and not and his has never been.

I'm with you ETF. It's just sad. I love the 'Dope; it's the only message board I've ever participated in, and want to see it continue. I just don't think that's going to happen with Ed at the helm, capriciously wielding his power.

Ed has set up arbitrary, interpretive rules, and will be frustrated at everyone's need for clarification. The mods will become more frustrated, the posters will become more frustrated, and Ed himself will eventually hate everything about the SDMB.

I want the board to survive, in one form or another. I hope it will be here.

Actually, as written, I believe it'll be an easy enough one to moderate - no invective directly suggesting in an insulting way some sexual act directed at another poster. So, no "blow me" or "eat me" or "Fuck you" (except in flirting threads).

It's just such an assinine rule. You can say "fuck you" to a politician, the president, your boss (as long as they don't post there), you can tell some one they're a fucking moran, unless, of course, their screen name is "moran" in which case you'd be in violation of the rule.

What Exit?, right on. The whole thing makes no sense at all. The Board was fine, and if the Pit occasionally got a bit blue, well, we're all grown ups who understand what the little red X is in the top right corner of the screen. But it's almost as if someone forced Ed to read the Pit every day and he was horrified by what he saw. (In fairness, if all I ever saw of the Dope was the Pit, I'd be horrified too.)

What disturbs me the most is how irrational the new rules are, and how unwilling TPTB were even to engage on the issues -- what was the problem they were trying to fix, and were there rational ways to fix it. Instead, we have Ed saying that very few posts he's seen would violate the new rules (so we need them because...?) and Dex saying that TPTB can't clarify the rules because to do so would take a 700 page document. So if the rules are mostly not going to impact us, and can't be clarified so that we even understand what impact they'll actually have, why have them at all?

And now this craptastic list of "no-no" words. And the funny thing is, it seems like this is intended to pacify everyone while letting 99% of the new, irrational, unworkable, vague, unnecessary rules stand.

I'll still post over there, but I'm glad that the free market works as well as it does.

I was the one who originally brought up the telemarketer thread, but backed off from the conversation to wait and see how the admins and mods would work through how the rules would be enforced. I wanted to see if the SDMB over time would keep the same character that made it a place I wanted to join.

After reading that though... no. It's clear that it already has not. Don't edit people's posts. I don't care if it IS just to remove a couple of profanities; if you claim the right to edit posts for content, there's not a post on the board that you can trust says what the author originally intended it to.

Well, I just tried again in Ed's Bad Word announcement thread. The whole time I was writing I kept thinking, "It's too late, it doesn't matter, they're set on disaster and nothing I say or do will help." The whole time I worked for them the mantra was to avoid laying down case law and umpteen volumes of the Code of Doper Regulations. But that's exactly where they're heading now.

God, if Giraffe couldn't get through to them, arguing sense from the inside, I really don't think there's the slightest hope now for anything more than small compromises on details. All this, every sad bit of it, is a gross over-reaction to a few nasty clashes with staff in The Pit. Unfortunately the staff involved weren't without fault. Ed could--and should--have ended it by ending it. He didn't have to hold a public flogging. There's nothing wrong with reversing a mod's (or admin's) decision. Just dispassionately overturning the action would have been enough.

It's just a message board. Of course egos and pride can get bruised but it's still JUST A MESSAGE BOARD.

there. Besides the literal translation and the emotional feeling.
I mean, they're just busy words. There's a lot of syllables to contend
with. And those Ks, those are agressive sounds. They just jump out at
you like "coCKsuCKer, motherfuCKer. coCKsuCKer, motherfuCKer."
It's like an assualt on you. We mentioned Shit earlier, and 2 of the
other 4-letter Anglo-Saxon words are Piss and Cunt, which go
together of course. A little accedental humor there. The reason that
Piss and Cunt are on the list is because a long time ago, there were
certain ladies that said "Those are the 2 I am not going to say. I
don't mind Fuck and Shit but 'P' and 'C' are out.", which led to such
stupid sentences as "Okay you fuckers, I'm going to tinckle now."
And, of course, the word Fuck. I don't really, well that's more
accedental humor, I don't wanna get into that now because I think
it takes to long. But I do mean that. I think the word Fuck is a very
imprortant word. It is the beginning of life, yet it is a word we use to
hurt one another quite often. People much wiser than I am said,
"I'd rather have my son watch a film with 2 people making love
than 2 people trying to kill one another. I, of course, can agree. It is
a great sentence. I wish I knew who said it first. I agree with that but
I like to take it a step further. I'd like to substitute the word Fuck for
the word Kill in all of those movie cliches we grew up with. "Okay,
