In my thread in CS about Hawaiian pizza, I rather whimsically mentioned that eating it is like going to hookers -- everybody knows it's common, but practically no one admits to it.

That got me thinking -- look in any "alternative" paper, and there's more ads for whores than anything else. I've lived near strolls, and they were sure busy. But are there any reliable statistics on what proportion of men actually avail themselves of these services? I have trouble believing it's only four really rich and horny guys.

I've only ever known two guys who've used 'em - one I knew about because he got caught by the police, prosecuted, and his name in the paper, and the other because he told me about losing his virginity to a Times Square ho after being aggressively propositioned and too weak-willed to say no. I've never used one, and I'm not aware of anyone that I know using one, though back home in Australia I new where I could find them. One area was where they worked on street corners, near where a friend lived, and one establishment was right next door to a shop owned by a friend -- and, no, I doubt if either friend ever used their services. So I don't know where their clientele comes from.

Er, what? Somehow I doubt that. I've never had the interest and the money to solicit a professional at the same time, personally. "Near 100%" assumes that nearly 100% of men like the idea of having sex with someone they can afford, which, since most men are poor, sounds dubious at best.

What? For adolescent males without willing girl friends, wouldn't the "normal and healthy sex life" be mostly masturbation. And since most adolescent males don't have a lot of money, the fact that masturbation is virtually free would be very attractive.

A big reason I enjoy getting laid (like we need reasons) is the feeling that I'm getting someone else (and hopefully someone I like a lot) turned on. When I'm paying someone for sex (or "if I were" since I haven't yet done so) she might (and probably would be) pretending to be turned on, if she bothered at all, because that would be part of the service. Seems to me to be much cheaper and more time-efficient to whack off.

I did once, long ago and in Nevada. But I found the entire experience disappointing and mildly unpleasant and would not repeat it even if it was free.

Other than that, I've been approached a number of times by the lower end of the prostitute scale and have found myself openly laughing at them each time, much to their irritation. Not even a full body condom and a dose of (science fiction) CureAll could induce me to take advantage of those women.

Hell, after the whatshisname scandal with the high priced escort girls, I figured that maybe, just maybe, if I was Warren Buffet rich, I could do such a thing on occasion and blow a couple of grand on a woman who might be worth it, but that's just an idea and I don't know if I'd actually go through with it or decide that, even then, it wasn't worth it. I'll let you know how it works out if Warren Buffet suddenly kicks off and mysteriously wills me all his money.

No, not really - there are no explanation for the differences other than "culturally bound forms of sexuality". The point of bringing the statistics in the article is to show that prostitution is not an absolute, universal entity, but varies in form and other aspects from culture to culture. Supposedly this shows us that it is possible (in theory) to influence teenage boys to find other outlets for their sexuality than visiting prostitutes; we just have to change the (primarily) male "prostitution culture".
