Graham points upward with one finger. "You'd better let me--unless you want you and your crew to be transported into a location exactly one mile up in the sky overhead, there to find your way back down to the ground as best you can--which is the order I left if anything went squirrely," Graham bluffs in straightforward, un-dramatic tone.

"Doc, green light for you all to join us," Graham says over his shoulder. "We're going to see President Okmyx," he adds as he turns back to give Kylah a nod and what he hopes is an encouraging nod.

Kalo holds up his hands at Graham's threat. "Hey, take it easy, pally. There's not gonna be any trouble, I told ya."

T'Var doesn't reply to Graham, but soon walks out of the kitchen with Morris. Kalo smiles at both and says, "Mo-Mo, good to see you again! Been too long - a lot has happened since, eh? Busy week. Hope we can help you figure out what happened to the others."

Morris returns the smile but doesn't look especially happy, Kylah notices. "Thank you, Kalo," the officer says. "I hope so, too."

"And you are...?" Kalo says to T'Var, with a very slight bow.

    "T'Var," she says.

"Well, hello. What do you do up on your ship?"

She glances at Graham, and then says, "I am a doctor."

"A woman doctor, and a pointy-ears too, just like Spock, eh?"

She nods calmly. "I am a Vulcan, yes."

Kalo says, "A Vulcan, right. OK, nice to meetcha. We got cars waitin'. C'mon, let's go."

He leads you outside. Three long black Twenties touring cars are parked in a row along the curb. Another six mooks, Tommy guns in hand, straighten as Kalo and the others emerge from the Federation safe house. Two, Graham notices, are keeping an alert eye on the street and passing traffic.

Collins is a little surprised at Krako's reaction. She tags on to Rangin's statement. "But now that you know, what can you tell us about our missing colleagues?"

Krako spreads his hands. "I have my boys looking now, but so far, there've been very few leads. Believe me, nobody wants to have the CAG found more than me. I want closer ties with the Federation - I want this planet to be a member of the Federation, your Federation, someday soon - and incidents like this only hurt our cause. Okmyx is still clinging to The Book. He wants to keep his piece of the action. He can't let go of the old ways, and he thinks like he always has - that violence, kidnapping and gunplay is how this world ought to be run. But everyone in this room knows that's wrong."

Rangin takes a careful look round at the goons seeing if they look like they feel the same way as Krako.

"Yes, any leads you have on our colleagues would be useful, we might have a better chance in tracking some of them down, technically speaking."

Kylah, intimidated by the guns, would not be able to move if not for Mr. Graham's obvious intention to push them into attending this forced 'invitation.' She feels trapped in a whirl of confusing and seemingly inexplicable circumstances. Until Mr. Graham called for T'Var and Morris, Kylah was about to affect perplexity at the notion that two more were in the building, but that tactic was ruined. She tries not to show fear while being escorted toward the car, but so many threatening men are nearby that her face seems bloodless and every instinct is telling her to run.

Nothing seems to make sense. She does not know what to make of Morris's reaction, although Kalo's greeting seemed condescending and over-familiar. And Kalo's remark to Dr. T'Var--Kylah has been too crowded by others to see the other woman, but the last time Kylah saw her, she was wearing a cloche hat specifically to hide her Vulcan ears... so how could the gangster have seen them?

Most of all, how did he have been so certain that there were two more people in the building? Dr. T'Var and Lt. Morris beamed in, they were not in sight near the building. If they were watching through binoculars, they could only have seen Mr. Graham and Kylah herself outside the door. So how did Kalo find out the others were inside?!

The last question is the most worrying. Was there some listening device hidden in the building? Is this culture technically capable of such an invention? Or could they have received some inside information from Lt. Morris himself, while he was alone? Is that what lay behind his discomfort at Kalo's greeting?

Overwhelmed by such doubts and desperate to ignore the sickening sense of déjà vu from being surrounded by armed men, Kylah blindly reaches out for Mr. Graham's arm and slips her hand around his elbow. Anything to remind her that these circumstances are different from that warehouse on Anubis.

They walked out a good 100, 200 meters along the sandbar on the Gulf Coast of North America. Standing together to look at the sunset like they were alone in the universe in the middle of a warm ocean...

Outbound, their feet stayed dry, despite the roiling waves where the water was deeper, only a few meters away. Inbound, the incoming tide threw water across their path. Halfway back a particularly large wave reached up to Lizzy's knees, strong enough to make her wobble for a moment...

Startled, her hand snapped up as if by instinct to grab his elbow. She was getting older...soon she'd be a teenager. Old enough to not want rides on daddy's shoulders anymore, or even to hold his hand in public... But at the touch it's as if she were little again, raising her arms in front of him, insisting he pick her up.

His opposite hand moves to clasp hers with a gentle but strong grip. "It's OK," he says quietly, wondering how many times a young woman who takes after a strong-minded mother would ever turn to her father for reassurance ever again. "Don't worry, I'll never let go."

At the touch at his elbow, Graham's opposite hand moves without conscious thought to Kylah's and gives it a gentle squeeze.

    And then...

He doesn't let go, but he's back in the moment, stirred by the wary attitude of Kalo's men.

"You expecting trouble?" Graham asks Kalo evenly.

Krako looks cannily at Rangin, and pushes the Starfleet gear back across the table to the three. "All right, let's help each other, then. Take your stuff back. I'm gonna have you go with... Bullo, and see if you might have better luck finding the CAG guys." He nods at one of his mooks, a large blond man in Science blue. "Check with HQ, Bullo, and see what you can find out, what the latest word is on the street."

    "Aye, Captain," the man says.

"And change into your civvies," Krako says. "I think you're gonna want to blend for this gig, and our Starfleet friends are already in such nice Chicago threads." He grins.

Kalo says wryly to Graham, "Trouble? Always. Expect it, and you'll usually find it, but at least you'll be ready for it. Let's see. You and the girl, you'll ride with me. Morris and the Vulcan doc, you go in the next car." The armed men begin to climb into the black hardtop cars.

Somewhere through the haze of confusion, Kylah feels Mr. Graham's hand covering hers. It dwarfs her fingers and warms them, but what sends a ripple of shock through her is that more than physical warmth, he radiates--

    protection... concern... regret... nostalgia... love

--and she inhales as sharply as if someone just jabbed her with a fork. She sensed something. She sensed him.

Whatever he was feeling, it must have been so strong it actually penetrated through whatever veil has been shrouding her empathic abilities ever since the Klingon attack. Since the Zweller incident, whatever happened.

Reflexively she tightens her fingers around his, wanting to continue this link, wanting more, like someone starving who has finally had a taste of nourishment. Though the surge of emotions seems to have ebbed, the warmth is still there.

It allows her to remember she is a Starfleet officer on duty. Not alone and helpless in the dark. So when Kalo speaks, Kylah is able to hear him and process the order. At once her internal alarm goes off again--it does not seem safe to be separated--and she looks back at Lt. Morris. How does he look? Is he afraid?

"I am a woman, not a girl," she hears herself saying from far away. "And I do not see why we must go in separate vehicles. They each seem large enough to contain five of us, plus the person who runs the machine." Kylah aims a challenging look--as much as she can manage--at Kalo. "Three in front, three in back. You are not afraid to be outnumbered, are you? A strong man such as you?"

Graham has to give Kylah credit: she's probably doing a damn good job of pushing the buttons of a guy like Kalo in a mob-based culture.

Also, in the process, he thinks, creating a non-zero chance I'll have to duke it out with him man to man over her honor, or something like that...

But her bold response draws him back to the past again. It's hard not to turn to look at her...but that would break the spell.

    I am a woman, not a girl...

So much like Lizzy...but after, when Jane was gone, when she...rebelled... As she should have against a father doing a shitty job...

Graham is reasonably sure Kalo is smooth enough operator to shrug off the provocations.

He's more sure that if he hurts Kylah, physically or emotionally, he's going to wish he'd never been born.

"Thanks for the suggestion, honey, but we'll do it my way," Kalo says dismissively. The mooks gesture with their Tommy guns.

"Talking about checking in with HQ," Rangin holds up the communicator and waves it slightly in the air. "It's been a little while and I'd hate for them to get nervous with us out of contact. Besides they might be able to help if we need it."

If Krako agrees, Rangin thumbs a quick note to T'var as she is leading the other party asking for a report on how they are progressing at the safe house. He remembers back to OCIII and makes it a silent caĺl ready to be picked up as and when she is ready. Then he calls Lt. Thalen, to fill him in on the details...and let him know where they are.

Graham is conscious of--actually, appreciates Kylah's efforts, enabling him to be good cop while she pushes on the goons. At the same time, he's feeling reasonably comfortable that a meeting is legitimately in the offing.

"It's all right, Mister--uh, Miss Kylah," he says, glancing at her. "I think we can trust Kalo's offer at the moment--assuming he and his crew remembers their manners," he adds with a shaper edge, addressed at Kalo.

Kylah responds to Mr. Graham with a tight-lipped nod before forcing out a quiet "yes, sir." She again tries to discern what Lt. Morris's reaction to this is, looking back over to him and T'Var as the colleagues are separated into pairs.

Once she examines Lt. Morris's expression--if she can see it--she reluctantly lets go of Mr. Graham's arm and moves to enter the car. It suddenly occurs to her that she might have to sit beside either Kalo or one of his goons, a thought that makes her even less comfortable with this situation. Aside from the unpleasantness of being in such close proximity with these men, she wants to send a quick message to the Yorktown... something she is unlikely to accomplish in secret if she is flanked by the strangers.

"Sure, go ahead," Krako says to Rangin, seemingly full of good cheer. Garcia takes back his phaser-1 and communicator.

Rangin has no immediate response from T'Var, but Thalen on the Yorktown at once acknowledges his brief report.

"You need an awful lot of reassuring, don't you?" Kalo asks Graham with a sardonic smile. "Now get in the car, please."

Kylah can't see Morris's expression before he and T'Var are led to another car. The young Communications officer and Graham get in a car together and find themselves shoulder to shoulder in the second seat. The driver and Kalo are in the front seat, and another two mooks are seated directly behind Kylah and Graham, Tommy guns still in hand and at the ready. The cars' engines come to a life with a roar, and the long black vehicles pull away from the curb, tires squealing, one after another, merging into traffic.

Kylah keeps her arms at her sides, breathing evently to keep herself calm. While the others settle in, she gradually slips her left hand into her dress's drop-waisted sash where she hid her communicator earlier, almost presciently.

With the seatback behind her, and the other one in front, she hopes her fingers' painstakingly slow and subtle movement will be blocked and thus unnoticed. If anyone looks downwards in the direction of her hips...which seems unlikely, but with men one never knows...she will simply pretend to adjust her dress. It should not raise suspicion; after all, her purse, bulked up with the phaser and tricorder, is on her lap, and she will make no move to open it.

To maintain character--she has been quite vocal and any sudden lapse into silence might alert them to surreptitious activity--Kylah jerks her chin up in impatience, shrugging her hair behind her shoulders and not incidentally revealing her dress's attributes to their best advantage. "Very well, Mr. Kalo, you have given us little choice but to accept this ruse of an invitation. Where are you taking us? Where does your President keep his... 'guests'?"

Kalo feigns surprise, although Kylah sees that he notices her curves. "Whaddya mean, 'ruse'? That ain't nice. I invited - you accepted. We're going to the Syndicate HQ. And I don't know nothin' about 'keep'ing you. He just wants to talk, is all."

Kylah offers Kalo a slightly chastising smile, though there is some warmth behind it.

"Forgive me, Mr. Kalo. You must understand, I am much nicer to those whose invitations are not issued at the point of a gun." She crosses her right leg over her left and adjusts the skirt, a casual action to help shield the activity of her left hand. Beneath the sash, her fingers are now able to feel the familiar cool metal of her communicator.

"I did not feel I could refuse. Mr. Graham wished to attend, and he is my boss and I do what he tells me, just as--I presume--you do the same for the President." Kylah's smile tilts, again teasing, trying to determine whether this annoys Kalo or is considered a compliment. How does he really feel about the head of the Syndicate?

"...But I should not monopolize the conversation. I am sure my colleague here has many questions about the President and this organization...?" She prays silently that Mr. Graham will understand that she wants Kalo distracted, and wishes she could communicate with Graham telepathically to make this clear. As pressed up against her as he is, he is certainly physically close enough to have a conversation with... if her abilities were stronger, and if he were attuned enough to receive her thoughts.

Graham shifts a bit awkwardly, on the one hand to make his shoulders fit without bashing into the door and on the other in response to Kylah's baring some...things.

But she's trying to get Kalo to talk, he notes, which is what we want.

"We'll, speakin' of guns, ruses, and reassurance, you can't blame us for assuming it's not all one big happy family down here--what's the story between President Okmyx and...what's the other guy's name? Drako? Kraku?" Graham asks.

Kalo scoffs a little. "You must mean Krako. He's the VP, but he wants to be boss himself someday - and this afternoon, or tomorrow even, probably wouldn't be soon enough for him. When Kirk set up the Syndicate, Krako agreed to take the number-two spot but he's never been especially happy with it. He's stayed in the government but hasn't been all that helpful, you know?"

Rangin gived his update to Lt. Thalen and then puts the communicator away. He doesn't mention T'Var and the other team but hopes that she will get back in contact shortly.

He looks across at Collins and Garcia before he turns back to Krako and Bullo. "Ok, ready," he states.

Bullo has by now changed into Twenties garb and returned. He gestures towards the door. "This way, please," he says.

"Good luck!" says Krako cheerily as you go. He turns to talk to two other Starfleet-garbed advisors.

Bullo leads the three Yorktown crew outside. Two black cars and four mooks, all likewise dressed in Twenties suits and ties, await you there.

Rangin can't help but smile at Collins' protestation, but he can't help but agree with her, after all he wouldn't want to be caught alone with three of the other mooks.

"On the other hand, Bullo...you don't mind if I call you Bullo do you...you do get to drive. I don't think it would be that safe for us to do so." Rangin chimes in an upbeat fashion. He checks to see what kind of reaction he gets, good humoured or not happy and only playing along due to orders.

Bullo says, "Sure, call me whatever. And I'm not drivin' - Hebyx here is." Hebyx, a big, red-haired guy, takes the wheel with just a nod to you. Bullo sits beside him in the front passenger seat. Rangin, Collins and Garcia can all just fit in the back seat. The other mooks pile into the other car. Both vehicles pull smoothly out into traffic.

Kalo shrugs in response to Graham's question. "Dunno. But whatever Krako's up to, I can guar-an-tee you it won't be in the President's best interests, you know? And that's what's most important to me, natch."

The three sedans soon pull up in front of a very impressive granite-and-glass skyscraper with SYNDICATE HEADQUARTERS engraved in gold over its large, elaborately-carved steel doors. The other gunmen climb out and establish a perimeter, Tommy guns up and ready. Other guards come out from the lobby to meet them.

"OK, here we are," Kalo says briskly. "Everybody out."

It's quite a thrill to be riding in one of these strange contraptions, seemingly unsafe by modern Federation standard, although the mooks seem ambivalent to it, no doubt being used to the experience.

"There's no word back from T'Var at all," Rangin says quietly to Collins sat next to him, "I'm hoping they haven't run into any serious problems," before he leans forward and calls out to Bullo over the sound of the engine and the wind whistling past. "So, where we're heading then?"

To Collins, Rangin replies quietly, "Hold off for the moment. But if we don't hear in half an hour, we will try again. If that doesn't work, we can escalate then...assuming we are still in a position to do so."

To Bullo, "Ah, a friendly ear on the ground. Well here's hoping it's news one way or another."

Without time to attempt contact, Kylah keeps the communicator tucked in her sash and waits for either Graham to slide out, or for someone to open the door on her side of the vehicle for her. Whichever happens first, she will get out.

Once on the pavement, she examines the large-scale building. The planet until now has seemed rather grubby to her; it reminds her of her home, and she feels surprisingly comfortable despite the weaponry surrounding her.

"The building is grander than I would have thought," she says to Mr. Graham, having decided that attempting to engage Kalo in conversation is a useless effort. She then swivels to see how Dr. T'Var and Lt. Morris have fared, particularly interested in judging whether the latter is afraid or uncomfortable or... really, any reaction at all. In a lower voice, she adds, "Do you think it important to talk with the others in private, sir?"

Bullo grunts. "You said it, mac." The cars speed along.

One of the mooks opens the door for Kylah and even offers his hand as she gets out. A short distance away along the same curb, Dr. T'Var and Lt. Morris are getting out of another car; both have calm expressions. They, too, are surrounded by armed men.

Rangin sits back in his seat and lets them get on with driving. "What do you reckon?" he asks the others.

Graham surveys the scene and, while continuing to look about with a neutral to appreciative expression speaks in a low voice to Kylah.

"Stay alert but cool. Don't know Morris but I trust the Doc--uh, T'Var's instincts." He frowns just for a moment. "If we can get you some time out of sight, set your communicator for an immediate beam out signal. Grab Morris and go if things go bad."

Murmuring, Garcia asks Rangin, "What do you mean, sir?"

Morris and T'Var come over to Graham and Kylah. Some nearby mooks watch them, and others watch passing traffic on the busy street. "Are you both all right?" Morris asks.

"I'm not sure" Collins says quietly "but something tells me Krako and his staff aren't being completely forthcoming. Call it a gut feeling."

Garcia looks at her, frowns, shrugs. "Could be. I'm not sure about anything on this planet."

Graham briefly and instinctively glances at Kylah, reacting to his question as about broader concerns than their immediate surroundings.

"We were going to ask you the same thing. You know the players," Graham says in a low voice, leaning closer. "Any concerns about following through with the meeting?"
He glances at T'Var and then back to Morris, inviting her opinion.

Kylah nods at Graham's order to contact the Yorktown and arrange for a beam-out. If they are not walking into a trap--or at least, not a trap that will be immediately sprung--she should be able to arrange for a moment alone.

She is a little surprised by Lt. Morris's question. "The trip was uneventful," she replies under her breath, eyeing the gangsters surrounding them and trying to avoid being heard. "I hope we get a chance to speak further, Lt. Morris. I would like to know more about your relationship with Mr. Kalo. He seems... unpleasant toward you. Can we expect the same reception from the president?"

Morris says slowly to Graham, "No... I'm just as uneasy as before, but I have no better plan."

T'Var says, "Likewise. And they would not allow me to use my communicator in the car. I believe a text came in for me."

To Kylah Morris quietly replies, "Kalo doesn't trust the Federation. He's fiercely loyal to Okmyx and... resents our presence here. Okmyx is more easy-going, at least on the surface."

"OK, OK," says Kalo himself, coming over. "C'mon, let's all go inside. I don't wanna keep the President waitin'."

"I'd be amazed if they aren't holding something back, but as to what it is I have no idea." Rangin says quietly as he sits back and relaxes. "So, for the moment let's play good little Feddies and see what we can do to find the missing group. I know I'll be keeping my eyes and ears open to see what's happening."

"Actually, Garcia, can you use your tricorder to listen in on any conversation in that other car? They may be saying something of interest without us around."

Kylah nods at Kalo's request. As they walk she will stay near him, just in case there is any chance of gaining his trust, or at least his non-hostility, by being amiable.

She purposely hangs on tightly to her purse, as if everything she deems important is within. Their belongings might be confiscated, for all she knows. And while being without her phaser and tricorder would be a wrench, the communicator is by far the most important device in her possession.

Graham grunts quietly and scowls. "All right we go in - we can deal with the text when, hopefully, Okmyx takes down the tension level."

"Of course, he's the President after all," Graham replies more loudly to Kalo.

Garcia murmurs, "I'm not quite sure how to use my tricorder for that, sir... even if the Iotians were to let me."

Bullo glances over his shoulder and says, "Almost there." The car turns, and then turns again, going down a trash-strewn alley.

"Right you are, pally," Kalo says to Graham with an easy smile. He seems pleased - even relieved - to be here, and leads the way into the big building, the mooks fanning out and holding off pedestrians as you enter. You pass through the doors and enter a large, polished granite-and-brass lobby. A giant portrait of Okmyx looks down over a high, wide staircase. Just off to your left, a tall young man in a sharp suit is holding an older, shabby-looking man by the shirtfront. The young man seems angry; he shakes the shabby man. He is talking but you can't hear what he's saying at this distance.

"Good point and I wouldn't worry about it. Looks like we're in business," replies Rangin.

"Ok set phasers set to stun, let's let them take the lead and see what we get drawn into. Don't do anything obviously Federation-wise unless you absolutely have to."

Rangin sits up slightly and discreetly checks the phaser is set to the correct setting. He can feel a tense knot in his stomach as he waits for the car to come to a halt, as he wonders what they will find and whether Krako is on the level it is just a trap.

"I don't like the looks of this alleyway," Collins feels very uneasy as she talks very quietly to her crewmates. "Sure they gave us our gear back, but I've got a bad feeling about this."

After two more turns, the black cars come to a gentle halt, and Bullo, Hebyx and the others pile out, Tommy guns and pistols at the ready. The alley is, if anything, more decrepit than the first one you saw, and it smells. Another man in a suit appears at the far end of the alley, whistles piercingly and gestures. Bullo waves, says "That's Zabo - he knows the score," and heads in that direction.
