"The heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives on this country's soil, lou are in the soil of a friendly country now. Therefore rest in peace. You are side by side with the little Mehmets. The mothers who send their sons to the war, wipe your tears away. Your sons are in our bosom, are in peace and will be sleeping in peace comfortably. From now on, they have become our sons since they have lost their lives on this land." - Kemal Ataturk, to ANZAC mourners at Gallipoli (1934)

"Around the turn of the 19th century, 'Turkish' music was so popular that piano manufacturers made special pianos with a 'Turkish stop,' also called the 'military' or 'Janissary' stop. The player would press a pedal that caused a bell to ring and/or a padded hammer to strike the soundboard in imitation of a bass drum." --Anonymous, entry "Turkish Music (style)," Wikipedia

"The desolation of the headquarters of the Tropical Belt Coal Company had been screened from the side of the sea; from the side where prying eyes -- if any were sufficiently interested, either in malice or in sorrow -- could have noted the decaying bones of that once sanguine enterprise." --Conrad, Victory

"Despite the best that has been done by everyone – the gallant fighting of the military and naval forces, the diligence and assiduity of our servants of the state, and the devoted service of our one hundred million people – the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage, while the general trends of the world have all turned against her interest. Moreover, the enemy has begun to employ a new and most cruel bomb, the power of which to do damage is, indeed, incalculable, taking the toll of many innocent lives. Should we continue to fight, not only would it result in an ultimate collapse and obliteration of the Japanese nation, but also it would lead to the total extinction of human civilization. Such being the case, how are we to save the millions of our subjects, or to atone ourselves before the hallowed spirits of our imperial ancestors? This is the reason why we have ordered the acceptance of the provisions of the joint declaration of the [Allied] powers...." - Emperor Hirohito, surrender broadcast (1945)

“Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town the Lord your God is giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly. Do not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous. Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the Lord your God is giving you.” – Deuteronomy 16:18-20

Poirot and Capt. Hastings playing *Monopoly* (American commercial board game):

Poirot: "I put a hotel on the Reading Railroad"
Capt: "You cannot put a hotel on a railroad."
Poirot: "But there is always a hotel near the railroads!"
Capt: "But that's not in the rules."
Poirot: "Well in that case then the rules are wrong!"

“Many and great are your sins - I know them all so well. You are the enemies of everything good; you take bribes; you refuse justice to the poor. Therefore, those who are wise will not try to interfere with the Lord in the dread day of your punishment. Be good, flee evil—and live! Then the Lord, the Lord Almighty, will truly be your helper, as you have claimed he is. Hate evil and love the good; make your courts into true halls of justice.” – Amos 5:12-15

This is perennially the work of the barbarian, to undermine rational standards of judgment, to corrupt the inherited intuitive wisdom by which the people have always lived, and to do this not by spreading new beliefs but by creating a climate of doubt and bewilderment in which clarity about the larger aims of life is dimmed and the self-confidence of the people is destroyed, so that finally what you have is the impotent nihilism of the "generation of the third eye," now presently appearing on our university campuses. (One is, I take it, on the brink of impotence and nihilism when one begins to be aware of one's own awareness of what one is doing, saying, thinking. This is the paralysis of all serious thought; it is likewise the destruction of all the spontaneities of love.)

I was going to read in the Nicomachean Ethics tonight and it turns out my paperback is translated by this guy, Jules Tricot (Sorry, no English Wikipedia page, apparently).

Didn't know anything about him, apparently was just some guy who worked as a functionary for the main French railway system who really liked Aristotle: "According to the Aristotle specialist Augustin Mansion, Tricot « created a personal work, while not pretending to be original, but rather taking his inspiration from better works [...] His great claim to fame is to have completely given the lie to the very inaccurate translations of Barthélémy-Saint-Hilaire »" (Apologies for my crummy translation, it's not my favorite thing, and not very good at mixing languages).

Interesting. I wonder if he was in any way part inspiration for....I think it was in Renoir's Grand Illusion, some guy in a POW camp who was always nattering on about his work on Pindar (the Gk poet).

Occasionally when the Olympics come around I sometimes fool around in Pindar, but I don't really consider Winter Olympics a real thing, so this is my compromise, and maybe I'll learn something too.

"I call the darkness unto me.
From deepest depths of Earth and sea.
    From Ancient Evils Unawoken,

Oh, baby, I just can't make it not this way.

    "So long baby.
    Baby goodbye.
    I'm going start rambling.
Rambling till the day I die.
Yeah baby, going to ramble, ramble, ramble,
And I'm going to get into something, until the die I day, yes I am."
--unkn. lyricist, as peformed by the Queen of Soul.

ETAno, I'm not going to clean up my "transcription" of the words -- close enough. But that's definitely two separate people doing acoustic piano. I bet some of it was Aretha , little bleed through in the vocal mike, and somebody else just filled in the rest in post.
