Default The Bird Thread (real birds, not the black jazzman)

    Golden Eagle?
    Bald Eagle?

    Which is better?

And is there a better raptor?

Golden, just because Golden instead of Bald.

And, I dunno, I've always been kind of partial to the Harpy Eagle, though I won't say that I've given it a lot of thought.

I've always liked bald eagles more.

A more handsome bird, I think, but perhaps I'm a little partial because of their importance as symbols of America.

Yeah -- I mean golden eagles are bigger and faster, but bald eagles just look so imposing.

I'm only polling the crowd because I've seen very few of either in the wild until recently. Very neat to observe.

    Steller's Jays/bluejays -- yay or nay????

And, an interesting fact learned from the good fellas at wiki -- bald eagles are not actually bald. They just have white plumage about the head. J/K I lol'ed RET. Somebody should get some feather-dye for those poor birds.

Never heard of Steller's Jays before, but they look cool: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steller%27s_jay. Bluejays are a little annoying IMHO.

Steller's Jays are cool, I guess. A flock just settled outside my place about two months ago, and those big fuckers just go apeshit, for whatever reason. Dive-bombing my gutters, screwing around outside my home-office window.

Haven't seen or heard a crow since, though, so that's kind of cool.

They're a big, ugly bird filled with piss and vinegar, though, it seems.

I'd like to trap one and see how well it can mimic other bird AND animal AND non-animal sounds, though. That's a cool trick.

So, by my count from this Saturday, I've counted at least five Steller's Jays -- for some reason, my roof just above the outside balcony seems to be where they "talk shop," briefly, before going out to the alnus rubra stand a few feet away. I think Wiki said something like they tend to flock in groups of ten or so -- could well be. I don't know why I was so hard on them, really. They don't make much vocalization, that I've seen/heard, but they are pretty big and they don't seem to take any bullshit. They just fly up and grab their perch and then it's back to eating bugs or whatever they do.

A tiny house sparrow flew into the condo clubhouse on Friday last and was trapped. An older lady and her even-older mother (?) noticed it and had no idea what to do. I was all set to make a capture and free it, but obviously concerned about injuring it in the process. But the property manager stole my thunder and got to grab the bird. I hope he gets bird flu.

Steller's Jays are pretty ugly, though. Blue and black isn't the preferred combination, from what the geniuses at Vogue and Elle have to say. OTOH, it reminds me to play some more Fats Waller, so that's pretty good.
