Poverty-level American in 3rd world
If you moved a family of 4, who currently exist at the poverty level, to a 3rd world nation, how far up the economic ladder will they have moved?

Depends on the Country. Costa Rica has the advantage of the Dollar spreading further but being very stable and safer than most 3rd world countries and some 1st world countries. But where is the income going to come from now? If a family of 4 has $35k coming in now, they probably are not bringing any special skills to get jobs to match that money in the third world.
One scenario, win $25k for life, then Costa Rica may be a good place to try and stretch that.
Romania is probably the best European country to stretch a dollar. They are not euro. Of course tougher language barrier in all likelihood.
Using the internet it looks like in the US, Tennessee is pretty cheap.

To oversimplify: how far would poverty-level American wages get you in the 3rd World?

Here you go: http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living...=United+States
It looks like the $1 would stretch to $2 in Romania. Rent is especially cheaper.
