As soon as Dobson is gone, Rangin realizes he might just have called Ebling on her communicator, or that of one of her guards. Dobson asks at the reception desk anyway and they page Ebling, who answers a few minutes later on Rangin's communicator. By that time Dobson has returned to his side. "I'm out for a walk outside, just east of the resort," the Tellarite officer says. "What can I do for you, Mr. Rangin?"
Fastolfe says, "When I last looked in the box last night, there were four knives remaining. Someone's been here in the house ever since we arrived, I think. Even when most of us were out for a meal or going to the nightclub last night, at least one of my staff was here - and there's been no sign of a break-in. The people now in the house include me; Miss Adjetey; Caleb Hotchkiss, my bodyguard and valet, whom you met at the door; Dan Stimmons, my personal assistant; and Paula Goldman, my publicist. The two next door are guests whom I met this morning at breakfast and invited back. I'd really rather not drag them into all this. And yes, of course, you foolish girl, I already guessed I'm a suspect in Wilson's death."
