"Well, we just a bunch of people who can't stand to see someone being carted off by a bunch of Drones.", says Flicker from the turret. "We can always take you back if you like?"

"Which I was about to chip in, at least we ain't V'Sori or K'Tharen," remarks Terawatt, punctuating the statement with a hawk-spit that eloquently expresses his opinion of the offworlders.

"Can I kill him, Sparky?" Funshine asks Terawatt in his most unsettling cute-but-creepy voice. "Huh? Can I? I promise to do it reaaaaaally slow."

"You're... You're Resistance, aren't you? Man, I really lucked out. The V'Sori have been chasing us for the last couple days. We thought Deadeye's hideout was secure, but I guess he'd been tracked. We'll have to find a better place to hide out and lose this heat!"

Lovelace calls up from the driver's seat, "I don't mean to interrupt, but we've got a dozen cop cars, two Barracudas, and even a couple choppers homing in on us. We'd better think about ditching this thing soon!"

Flicker tries to think of anywhere local they can dump the Barracuda, and leg it to somewhere slightly less obvious. He isn't considering heading back to their warehouse just yet.

"Right, anything useful here, pick it up. Guns, explosives, anything." as he drops back down from the turret. "You, what's your name?", he questions the captive.

The Barracuda's weapons locker is mostly empty, since the Fin and the Drones took a lot of the weaponry with them, but there are two stun wands left, and the gun rack contains one V'Sori Plasma Rifle, fully charged (12 shots) but without any additional battery charge packs. There are also two light machine guns with a couple dozen extra clips, one modular laser sight, one spare Z-belt, and two coffee-can sized heavy explosive canisters. They're sealed shut, but they're very heavy, so you figure they're still full.

"My name is Rawls, Edwin Rawls, but I haven't used that name much in the last couple years. I've been working for Dr. Destruction in Cell Blue Alpha for most of that time, and I use my professional name, The Shifter. What cell is this?

"Less you know, less they can torture outta you if this goes tits up," says Terawatt, looking through the captured stuff to see if they've got anything for minor injuries. "We'll get ta socialising later."

As a helicopter flies low overhead, Lovelace looks up and yells "Incoming!", as a missile streaks downwards and the pawn shop to the Barracuda's left explodes in flames. Just then, two police cars come screeching around the corner, lights blazing and sirens howling.

Guess our driver better find us a place to bail out then - with plenty of hard cover for choice. Meanwhile, Terawatt leans out of the window and treats one of the cop cars to a spot of high voltage. Low-speed flight's just going to make him a nice easy target, dammit.

Terawatt leans out the window and lets loose with one of his signature electric blasts and is rewarded with a shower of sparks from the hood and roof, along with the flying rubber from bursting tires and the police cruiser spins out of control. The other car swings into a bootlegger's turn and takes up a position behind and to the right of the Barracuda. Terawatt can see the car's driver shouting into his radio.

Lovelace calls out, "I need a decision here. I can take the turnoff to Tempest (the SE corner of the city), or the Docks (SW), or I can keep going straight downtown. Or, I guess, I could hang a U-turn and we can try to blow past this car back down into Southpoint." If you'd like to look for a particular sort of place to ditch the Barracuda, like a warehouse, a restaurant, a hotel, a factory, or anything else, let me know.

As no-one else has, Flicker picks up the Plasma Rifle, the Z-Belt and the explosives.

"Don't bother turning off, we need to ditch now. Shopping Mall if you can manage it, so many people, so many exits, or any other crowded place if you can't and the sooner the better, I think." He looks at one the explosive canisters. "I think I'll set one off in here as we leave as a distraction."

Lovelace consults her guidance map, taps furiously at the nav computer, and the Barracuda screeches off towards the Champion Mall South, so re-named after Champion's heroics in protecting the mall from the maniacal Colonel Crowbar several years back. The remaining police car swings into pursuit, but seems to hang back, no doubt worried about Terawatt's lightning blasts. As she drives, she's aware of two police helicopters closing in.

The hijacked Barracuda swings into the "No Parking" zone in front of Champion Mall, and the villains, including The Shifter, pile out. Lovelace has activated her Disguise Device, appearing in the same accountant disguise she used in the last mission, while The Shifter has transformed into a tall, lean woman in a conservative business suit. All five villains run headlong into the mall, and as the police cruiser swings in and parks right behind the Barracuda, Flicker shouts, "Down!" All five villains hit the ground behind a low flowerbed planter, and after a long two seconds, a deafening blast shakes the ground and sends a long series of cracks up the sidewalk. As the five villains sprint into the mall, Flicker looks back over his shoulder and sees that the bomb flipped the police cruiser end over end across the median in the street, causing an instant traffic jam.

Chaos reigns in the mall, as screaming civilians try to take cover, exit through the front doors or retreat deeper into the building. Immediately ahead is the food court, with wings of the mall leading off to the east and west. Or you could try to get into the access hallways behind the shops and lose your pursuers that way.

I'm taking the liberty of assuming that the group wants to do so, since it's an obvious good choice.
The nearest access hallway is locked. Would you like to try to pick the lock, break the door down, go another way, or something else?

"Go for it, but I doubt you have minute, more like twenty seconds or so." Flicker looks around for any security guards who are likely to have keys on them.

Terawatt kneels to get lined up with his target. After just a few seconds of tweaking, he grins, twists hard, and the door pops open. It's just a very cheap lock, and not only is it easy to open, but it'll be easily relocked and melted from the far side, if you want to spend an extra twenty seconds on the project once you're on the far side. A success with six raises!

You all pile through the door and shut it quickly. Terawatt locks it quickly and sends a burst of electricity through it from his hands, melting and fusing it. No one's going to be able to unlock that thing, ever. They might break it down or come through another one, though, so you hurry on. After a moment, you come to a fork-- you can go left, which leads to the West parking lot, you can go straight ahead, which leads back onto the main mall floor, or you can go down into the maintenance level. What do you do?

"I really don't fancy being caught in here and besides I think everyone is likely to be trying to get out of here. West Car Park would be my choice. See if we can find something to pick up and get out of here."

    Flickers considers for a moment.

"No idea. They've been tracking us for weeks, smacking down our raids and finally harassing us at Deadeye's hideout and then at the safe house where you picked me up. Seemed to me they were tracking Swarm, mostly, but I can't be sure."

As the group bursts out the door, you all see the lone police car, lights blazing, in the parking lot. Two cops are standing by the car, screaming into their radios. They haven't seen any of you yet, though, and the villains duck behind a low wall as they hear the exterior door click shut behind them. Retreat will be tough, since that exterior door has no handle on the outside.

    What do you do?

They're calling for backup. It sounds like there aren't enough cops on the scene yet to cover ever exit, and these cops feel that they're being spread too thin, that if the villains appear, they'll simply be overpowered.

Lovelace nods and closes her eyes in focus. Suddenly the police radio begins squealing and cracking, and a scared male voice on the other end begin calls for backup at the East parking lot, describes a group of superhumans breaking free, then cuts off with a scream in the midst of gunfire. The two policemen that you can see jump into their car and speed away, tires squealing.

Point of order: Flicker can teleport someone with him. The two teddy bears each have a carrying limit of 120 pounds, and Lovelace is a pretty small girl. deepsoulfunk had planned that out.

"You two, pick a different disguise and start heading away" Flicker says pointing at Lovelace and Shifter. "You two, start running and stay hidden. " He says pointing at Patches and Funshine.

"Fancy being teleported out of sight and out of here, " he turns to address Terawatt.

Lovelace and The Shifter activate their respective disguises and run off, slipping right past a pair of Star City cop cars. The Shifter pauses to advise the cops that the villains are holed up inside a Foot Locker with dozens of hostages and cases of high explosives. The two blood-stained bears rocket off through the hedges, disappearing down an alleyway. Flicker grabs Terawatt by the wrist and they flicker briefly before they vanish from view entirely.

Two hours later, the gang reassembles at Lovelace's downtown penthouse. After sweeping for bugs, trackers, and other mechanical spies, she engages her Faraday cage and prepares coffee for everyone. She leans back in her chair and pointedly looks at the other villains. "I think it's time we asked a few questions of each other."

"Fewer questions for you, Winnie," Lovelace drawls coolly. "Your reputation precedes you. I'm wondering about our new friend, The Shifter." She turns to face the newcomer, a tall, rakish man apparently in his early thirties. "Your reputation, however, seems entirely absent. I can find no record of you on the 'net, and only The Chameleon has those sorts of disguise powers, and he was reported killed by the V'Sori almost fifteen months ago. Who are you?"

The Shifter grins charmingly. "I should hope you hadn't heard of me. I went by Wilson Rawls before the invasion. Edwin Rawls, The Chameleon, was my cousin, though we'd never met. I pulled two-man cons with Charisma when she wasn't working the catwalks in Paris and Milan. We started out with pigeon drops and pigs-in-pokes, a few Spanish Prisoners and once a Violin pull, and by the time the V'Sori invaded, we'd really started to hit the big time. It's easy to pull off a Bank Teller with my talents, you know? After the V'Sori landed, I hooked up with the Resistance. Too hard to get access to the big marks with the V'Sori in power, and you can't really enjoy the earnings in the same way. You know what I mean, don't you, sweetheart?"

Anyone else have any questions? I wanted to get the obvious ones out of the way.

Kicking back with the coffee, Flicker looks over the Shifter. "So, who were the rest of the group and how come you got caught. Groups don't just suddenly find the V'Sori knocking on their doorstep? Perhaps you ought to tell us the last couple of jobs you pulled to get so much attention."

The Shifter grins at Funshine's comment. "Like I said, it's mostly two-man cons, but sometimes I ran 'em solo, given my talents, right? But I pulled the wool over the Lourve's eyes last year about that old Etruscan sarcophagus. That made the news, maybe you heard of it? But since the V'sori landed, I've been hooked up with a couple of Omega cells. Yellow Alpha last year, until they broke up, and then Blue Alpha until earlier this morning, when the K'Tharen busted that up. With Yellow, it was mostly intel stuff for the Boss, and with Blue we were targeting a supply depot when the V'sori started tracking us closely. Still no idea about how they did that. It was like magic."

Lovelace sees Terawatt examining his flight gear. She can help him repair it here in her lair; she estimates no more than 1d4 hours of work.

Funshine is skeptical. "How do we know you didn't make your peace with the new regime and act as some kinda, I dunno, double agent? Do a job here or there to keep your street cred, but try to infiltrate groups like ours for your offworld pals to scoop up?"

The Shifter's grin cracks. "My rep is a little beyond yours, little man. I don't pull that kind of crap, and those damn Sharks are cramping my style as much as yours. Check your Omega records, if you need the confirmation that badly. The Boss thinks pretty well of me since I got Yellow Alpha into that ammo dump last year. You must have heard that one; last I heard, they figured it at 140 decibels and almost four on the Richter scale. If you'll excuse me, I've got to go take a leak; I haven't had a chance in hours." He stands and walks off toward the bathroom.

"Lovelace, when sweeping, you did include Shifter as well didn't you? I think we had better find out what happened to Yellow as well. Magic is something I see them using to track people down, high tech tracers perhaps, but not magic. Might be time to go and ask a few friends what they know about or mysterious fellow here."
