Default Prices on eBay -- Huh?

OK, always keeping up with what's hot, I've just developed an interest in eBay. And, I'm puzzled. Mostly it makes sense, but some of it, not so much. Thirty year old skin mags for 25 bucks (and nobody famous naked). Nice ties for a quarter, and free shipping. What's the story?

Hold on you've been looking for Skin Mags and a nice Tie.

Why not just pick up a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey

Heh, good one. But actually, I was looking in "Everything else", or some similar grouping, which was another odd thing...the old dirty magazines, the ties, and God knows what else sitting together.

Hmmm...are these the prices they are going for, or are they the initial bid/prices the person's hoping to get? If it's the latter, then my guesses are:

    1) Old skin mags: some guy's been saving these in his basement, figuring they'll be worth big bucks some day (like baseball cards), and is hoping to make his killing.
    2) Nice ties: fell off a truck as they came in from China, so seller's at 100% profit.

Some people can be quite deluded about the value of their old crap. Also, I assume the eBay market for clothes and accessories is quite saturated, which probably brings the prices down.

Sometimes the cheaper prices mask the shipping cost. So that tie for 25c is really $3 and that might be worthwhile to a wholesaler or someone who just wound up with a load of ties and no-one to sell them to.

Funny thing is, the ties had free shipping. I really don't get what was going on there. It's not like some of the cases where there seems to be a choice between paying five dollars for something and paying fifty for shipping, or paying fify for the same thing and paying five dollars for shipping.

Oh, and not really about the pricing, but, eh: Who tries to sell an opened bottle of cologne?

And pretty much every iTunes gift card, the seller wants more than the face price. Any theory as to what that's about?

OK, that doesn't make sense at all, unless there's some kind of handling fee when you buy them directly from Apple or the store ...

It's probably to cover PayPal fees and P&P.

But who are they expecting to pay it?
