Yes, Attlee became PM after Churchill lost the 1945 election. Most British voters seem to have decided that a great wartime leader would not necessarily be a great peacetime leader, and Attlee ended up doing pretty well. Churchill beat him in turn in, I think, 1951.

Hmm. Hard to draw conclusions from a very limited data set. Democrat FDR was reelected during WWII, but Republican Eisenhower was elected during the Korean War. Republican Nixon was narrowly elected during the worst of the Vietnam War, but Republican Reagan was elected and then reelected in peacetime. I think it has a lot more to do with the economy, and voter perceptions of the candidates in that particular election (including any incumbent), than a peacetime/wartime partisan calculus, as such.

Assange wasn't released from prison. He's still holed up in an embassy in London.

Still not sure about the wartime/peacetime thing. In addition to the Reagan counterexample, Obama, a Democrat, was elected despite the Iraq and Afghan conflicts still going strong; Trump, putatively a Republican, was elected despite the U.S. being essentially at peace.
