Did you describe a VIP as "modest, wise and good"? - Yes, Abigail Adams, writing to her husband about George Washington, whom she'd just met: "He is polite with dignity, affable without familiarity, distant without haughtiness, grave without austerity, modest, wise, and good."

    1. Not by accident, no. Oh, wait, you meant in the game. That does sound like a Greek myth, so could it be Athena?

    2. The only Buffalo Bill I can name is O.J. Simpson, so very clearly stumped.

    3. No, I am not Anton... Karpov? Something like that, crap.

EH -- Of course, ARNIE BECKER. I swear I first thought of L.A. Law when I read that, but for some reason could not think of Arnie. And it was with Roxanne, wasn't it?

    1. Okay, well, maybe this is John Adams? He was a lawyer, it could be.

    2. No, I am not Alexander Haig? Not sure if it's all that jokey, though (or if it was a full day).

    3. No, I am not Atticus Finch. Not getting caught out on that one again, thankyouverymuch!

AHA! So now we know why Mrs. Hsu went into the crawlspace? Oh God, when Kylah was worried about Mrs. H. crashing down on her head, I don't think this is what she had in mind.

(Credit to CIAS for this theory of your inspiration...)

And ummm Albert Dumbledore is the lesser known of the three brothers. He has a thing for sheep.

    2. This probably fits many people (Voldemort, kinda, if you're generous with 'same method' by including 'magic') but I can't think of any right now, alas. I'll probably be really annoyed for not knowing it.

    1. If you'd read my novel you'd know I know this. (Actually, even not having read it, you know my proclivities!) No, I am not Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

    2. No, I am not King Arthur

    3. No, I am not the scuzzy Charles Augustus Milverton, whom I believe Doyle based on a real person by a similar name, but can't remember what that is

You're gonna have to slip away from the mystery milieu (well, at least away from the classics--Doyle, Christie and Stout) to get some of those delicious DQs. Of course now I've doomed myself to nothin' but Tolkien ephemera, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and George R.R. Martin!

    1. I always keep calling him Anadin Skywalker, because every time you see him whining on screen, you want one for the headache.
    2. There may be several, and don't worry if you didn't know this one as well, but I was thinking of Asharak the Murgo from the Belgariad series.

Ahh, I forgot the other specialty, Military Trivia! My bad.

    1. Stumped, as you can guess! I brought it on myself.

    2. Yipe I have no idea. It's not Ozzy Osborne unless he has another kid with an "A" name, but I can't think of any rock star kids with "A" names (either first or last). Stumped, like the microphone.

    3. Ooh. Was this Army Archard? I'm not him, if it was.

Anadin must be a UK-only brand. Is it aspirin or paracetemol (sp? -- our version is Tylenol)? And OF COURSE, it was the Murgo from Belgariad, how could I possibly have not known that?!

    1. If I hadn't been reading articles about the Star Wars teaser I might not've remembered this, but: No, I am not Andy Serkis

    2. Wow. This sounds like a pretty big deal. But unfortunately I'm stumped--and very very curious.

    3. No, I am not Aldous Huxley. (Huh, my spellchecker recognized "Aldous.")

    2. Stumped like crazy.

    3. No, I am not Arturo Toscanini. The guy was the music director of my former employers for years, I'd better know him!

That's funny, I was thinking of Casey Affleck because you'd mentioned Interstellar, but as far as I remember he played a private detective in Gone Baby Gone--although some people do call them private cops I wasn't sure if he'd counted.

And Amanda! Damn my poor knowledge/memory of Spock's background.

    1) I have it on good authority that this is some dude named Aemon in Game of Thrones. (I don't count it as research if it's on the same page of posts)

    2) Stumped, of course

    3) Stumped again, although it sounds soapy enough that I should know it--or have written it myself!

Alan Scott - the original Green Lantern

So, a male leading character from am NYC sitcom from the 50's to the 70's. EH probably knows it, because I don't think my knowledge goes back that far.

    IQs:
    1. Did you co-star in a sitcom as well as being married to the main star of said sitcom?
    2. Did your co-stars include Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake?

I'll keep the DQ for the moment.

    Previous IQs:

Were you in the room when it was decided that highway signs in the U.S. should have green and not blue backgrounds? - A young Al Gore in the Fifties, visiting his dad, who was a U.S. senator before him.
Were you the longtime president of the Ohio Senate? - Stanley Aronoff.
Did you get something big named after you despite having very, very little to do with it? - Amerigo Vespucci and a whole freakin' continent.

Can't think of who this character is. Hmmm....

Not surprised Gore had some experience in the green movement at an early age. Oh, America. That. (Apollo was a good try, though?)

Boy, the way you asked the above two DQs, I thought you really had it made! So close...

CIAS, I would always do my best to ensure it was a figure you'd know. I'll be very surprised if this character didn't make it into your pop culture knowledge, even (or perhaps especially) in the UK.

    To your IQs:

    1. No, I am not Desi Arnaz
    2. No, I am not... Christina Aguilera? Actually if this is right, I didn't even know Timberlake was one of the Disney crew too.

Correct on both those IQs. As for whether I know it, I'll probably be kicking myself when I find out the answer

    DQ:
    1. Character aged over 50 when first shown?

    IQs:
    1. Were you the racist, bigoted working class lead man in a show which heavily satirised such views?
    2. Were you the American equivalent when the show was bought to the United States?

    DQs:

    1. Male

    4. It's possible but unlikely that he would be alive today
    5. First notable appearance on screen

    7. All in all, considered more good than bad, but it really depends
    8. First appeared since 1950

    14. Does not hold a graduate degree
    15. On a sitcom
    16. Actor did not go on have a bigger career in movies
    17. Leading character of that sitcom

I was going to say the same answer to both until I read the second question more thoroughly...

    1. No, I am not Alf Garnett
    2. But Yes, I am Archie Bunker

Did my subtle quoting from the theme song help? Archie turned 50 a couple of years into the show, which means... hard as it is to believe... in the first season, he's my age. YIPE. I have a few gray hairs (somewhere beneath the highlights) but I don't think I look the same age Carroll O'Connor did! Anyway, congrats--and if EH gave the assist, he gets congrats too!

    First all - woot!!

Second - err no, it didn't help in the slightest. I only know Archie Bunker as the Americanised version of Alf Garnett, and the series is apparently revered over in the USA. I've no idea what sitcom is called either, so I shall have to go and look it up.

    T'was a total longshot guess, I'm afraid.

Hmm, who to think of next.

OMG, you know every garbagetastic cartoon Hollywood has expelled from its trashy maw, but do not know Archie Bunker and All in the Family? (Sorry for forgetting to include the sitcom name!) And yes, it's easily one of the ten best U.S. sitcoms.

Archie is a much more nuanced character than Alf, even in the earliest years before his worldview gradually expanded by the nature of the times. He remained a bigot to the end, but as more of the outside world encroached on his territory via neighbors, in-laws and relatives, Archie's POV was challenged and the rough edges softened. Carroll O'Connor's performance is just perfection, making Archie funny while sometimes poignant, rough but not crass, ignorant but not stupid, and a bully but almost never intentionally mean.

The first season is raw, and Jean Stapleton's Edith (the equivalent of Else) isn't the sweet dingbat she became in the 2nd season onwards--even her voice is different--but all in all the whole series, probably even until Gloria and Mike left and a little beyond, is gold.

Archie Bunker, of course! Good one.

I remember watching it as a kid. My parents knew quality TV when they saw it. Here's more on All in the Family: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_in_the_family

And the British program which inspired it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Till_D...ish_TV_series)

If the woman's still living (and real) I should certainly imagine she was born after 1800!

Mine was 1. Ogden Nash, 2. Odile (the black swan), and 3. Odette (the swan queen), both from Swan Lake and yes, depicted in Black Swan.

    DQs:

I was going to say yes you could have a do-over, but after question 1

    1. You get the do-over when we see the pics so I actually have a chance of answering it. Otherwise I'm likely to answer Oscar the Friendly ghost on account of them never being seen
    2. No idea, I only know the team from the film Major League and Tom Berenger is really an option. The only baseball player I can think of is, is Ortiz?

Yeah I would reject that DQ too, CIAS! How on earth was anyone supposed to know what you look like as a kid, EH? Now, if you'd included a picture of yourself with the question, that might've been fair.

    - Are you a sports figure from the same city Eastern European country as my Grandmother? Ha, just kidding. As a young girl, were you the first Olympic gold medalist from Ukraine, who has sadly since been troubled by alcohol issues?

My IQ answers were Keiko O'Brien, wife of Miles from ST: DS9 of course, and Oksana Baiul, the young troubled Olympic skater from the mid-1990s.

    DQs:

    From Australia?
    Musician?

    IQs:

    1) Known mostly as a pop singer, did you play the lead in an extraordinarily popular movie musical where the moral was apparently, "if you want to win a guy, stop being a good girl and dress like a slut"?

    2) Are you a beloved sports star also remembered for your popular commercials, film appearances, and, um, a few run-ins with the law starting in the mid-1990s?

    3) Are you the cause of a tremendous romantic rivalry between two disparate men, despite your rather shapeless figure, large nose and generally obnoxious voice?

I remember Oksana Baiul, I didn't realise she was the first Ukrainian to win an Olympic Gold medal.

Annoyingly enough I can guess all of these and in reverse order.

    2. OJ Simpson
    1. Yes, enjoying those Summer Nights and the fact she was way older than the part she played. Yes, I am Olivia Newton-John

All right, choie! I remember my sister really being irritated by the message being sent to girls in the finale of Grease.
